Women of Phillips! WOMEN'S

HISTORY
MONTH!
Maudelle Bousfield was the first African American woman to
graduate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
She was discouraged from pursuing a career in her first love,
astronomy, because of her race and gender. Instead, she made
history by becoming the first black woman to serve as a principal
within Chicago Public Schools--at none other than Wendell
Phillips Academy High School! Ms. Bousfield was a math teacher
and the principal at Phillips, serving from 1939 to 1950. She was
known for running a notoriously tight ship, and did not tolerate
noisiness or tardiness. At the time that she was principal, Phillips
was known for having produced several famous athletes and
musicians!

Just over 75 years ago, Mary T. Washington became the very

first African American female to be a Certified Public Accountant.
Ms. Washington was a student at Phillips in the 1920s and
received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern
University. In 1939, she formed the accounting firm Washington,
Pittman & McKeever, LLC. She started the firm in a basement on
the South Side of Chicago at a time when most firms would not
consider hiring black women. Her legacy lives on through her
firm and through the Mary T. Washington Wylie Internship
Preparation Program, which is offered every January in Chicago
for college sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are majoring in
accounting. Interested in the field? Be sure to keep this
scholarship opportunity on your radar! Mary T. Washington
