JOB PROFILE: ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTANT

ar
As an environmental consultant you will advise
organisations on a broad range of environmental
issues. This can include anything from managing
waste and recycling to assessing flood risk and
dealing with the effects of climate change.
Having a good understanding of business practice
will help you to work with organisations in a
competitive commercial world. You’ll also be using
your communication skills to present your ideas and
findings to people.
Most new environmental consultants have a degree
or postgraduate degree in environmental studies,
environmental science or a related subject. You may
also need some experience of working in an
environmental setting like volunteering for a
sustainability charity.

WORK ACTIVITIES
Environmental consultants work across a wide range of specialisms. The type of work you do will depend on
the consultancy you work for but may cover:
renewable energy
flood risk
waste and recycling
carbon emissions
climate change and emission management.
Depending on the nature of your job, on a day-to-day basis you may typically:
• explore how suitable sites are for new developments like power stations or wind farms
• work out the risk to the environment from industries like energy or chemical production
• complete field surveys to collect data about contamination found on sites or in buildings
• analyse and interpret the data gathered in field surveys
• write scientific reports and present your findings
• assess business practices to make sure organisations are meeting environmental laws and regulations
• investigate contamination and report organisations who break environmental rules
• respond to environmental accidents and manage cleanup operations
• provide advice to organisations like industry or government on issues such as the disposal of waste.
As an environmental consultant you may offer advice to businesses on how to meet environmental rules and
regulations. For example, you may work with a chemical company to limit the levels of pollutants they can
release into the air. You can also get involved in helping businesses to reduce their impact on the environment
by changing to ‘greener’ processes and practices.
In this job you could also be known as a green consultant, eco consultant. If you specialise in impact
assessment you may be known as an environmental impact assessment manager.
