2. SUBJECT DESCRIPTION

2.1. Brief description


Hospitality management is an exciting professional discipline offering numerous career
opportunities. Introduction to Hospitality Management is a short tour of the fascinating and
challenging fields of the hospitality industry including lodging, foodservice, meetings,
conventions, leisure and recreation. The course also aims to provide knowledge on marketing,
human resources, leadership and management and how they apply to hospitality management.

2.2. Notes
Course components
Students must complete and submit all assessment items to receive an overall pass in this subject.
You are encouraged to read the relevant chapters in the textbook (and any necessary extra reading)
before attending the lectures. You might need to read them again and do your own research for
better understanding of the subject matter after each lecture. You need to attend all tutorial classes
to ask questions and actively engage in the activities.
The lectures are intended to introduce the concepts; they may contain material that goes beyond
the textbook. The tutorials will provide you opportunities to discuss these concepts and gain some
practical knowledge and skills. You will receive additional information about the assignment and
exercises during tutorial sessions.

Late submission of assignments


In circumstances where you are unable to submit your assignment by the due date, you should
contact the Instructor to discuss an extension to the due date. If an extension is granted,
confirmation of the new due date will be given to you in writing. You should print out and attach a
copy of this confirmation to your assignment.
3. LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

3.1. Objectives
See the specific objectives for each lecture in Section 4.

3.2. Assessment tasks


3.2.1. Mid-term test
The content to be tested: Lecture 1-7
Time: 60 minute test, on week 8 (April 1)
Format: MCQs, SAQs, and small case studies

3.3.3. Written assignment


There will be 1 written assignment during the course and must be done independently and
individually by students. Topic and due date is to be determined.

3.3.4. Final test


30 MCQ and 5 T/F; 2 short-answer questions; 1-2 case study
The content of the test can be found in all lectures and tutorials.

3.3. Others
Apart from all the above requirements, you need to follow the rules and regulations set out

10 minutes: Revision
45 minutes: Homework presentations (individual)
