QUESTION 1

A machine weighing 1000 kg operates at 1500 rpm was originally placed directly to the floor
of a building. Due to excessive vibration it was decided to place four metal springs to support
the machine.

Determine the spring constant of each spring if the force transmitted to the floor is to be reduced
by 90%.
(15 marks)

What is the spring constant of each spring if metal springs are replaced by rubber springs with
=0.1 in order to achieve the same reduction?

QUESTION 2

Physical clearance is very common among mechanical components. This can be the gap
between the rotating shaft and the housing or loose riveting. The simplest idealization of such
a system is shown in Figure 1a.

The mass M can move freely without friction between two massless springs each with a spring
constant k. The springs are firmly anchored at one end.

Oscillation of the system started when the mass M moves and compresses one of the springs
by Xm as shown in Figure 1b. What is the frequency of this oscillation?

QUESTION 3

A pendulum system consists of two pendulums. The first pendulum has a length l1 and a mass
m1 . The second one has a length l2 and a mass m2 , and is suspended from m1 . The mass m1
is connected to a horizontal spring k, as shown in Figure 2a. The parameters for this pendulum
system are as follows: l1 = 10m, m1 = 1kg, l2 = 10m, m2 = 2kg, and k = 1N/m. We assume
that the gravity acceleration g = 10m/s2.

QUESTION 4

A beam of two fixed ends, as shown in Figure 3, may undergo a lateral vibration. The beam is
of a solid circular cross-section, and has the following material and dimensional parameters:
density , Young’s modulus E = , radius r = 0.01m, and length
l = 1m. Hint: the area moment of inertia for a solid circular cross-section is I = , where
r is the radius.

Figure 3: A beam of fixed-fixed ends

(a) Determine its fundamental natural frequency (in rad/s).

(10 marks)

(b) If the beam has a length l = 2m, determine its the fundamental natural frequency (in
rad/s).
(5 marks)

(c) If the beam has fixed-free ends, as shown in Figure 4, determine its fundamental natural
frequency (in rad/s), assuming its length is still l = 1m.
