II. Problem Solving . Write your complete solution.

1. Consider the following reaction between oxides of nitrogen:

NO2 (g) + N2O (g) → 3 NO (g)

(a) Use the thermodynamic table to predict how ΔG˚ for the reaction varies with increasing
temperature. (b) Calculate ΔG˚at 800 K, assuming that ΔH˚andΔS˚do not change with
temperature. Under standard conditions, is the reaction spontaneous at 800K? (c) Calculate ΔG˚ at
1000K. Is the reaction spontaneous under standard conditions?

2. In the Mond process for the purification of nickel, carbon monoxide is reacted with heated nickel to
produce Ni(CO)4, which is a gas and can therefore be separated from solid impurities:

Ni (s) + 4 CO (g) ⇌ Ni(CO)4 (g)

Given that the standard free energies of formation of CO (g) and Ni(CO) 4 are -137.3 kJ/mol and -587.4
