Sector Brief

Key findings

The Romanian Furniture Market registred a positive evolution for the last five years,
following the decline seen in 2008 and 2009, as a result of the financial crisis.
The Romanian furniture industry represents a priority for the country's processing industry,
considering the following advantages:
o it has highly skilled labor force and qualified personnel capable to adapt to modern
technical and management demands, as well as a strong network of vocational
schools and a higher learning institution;
o existing production capacities can have better performance by being upgraded and
re-equipped;
o the field's specificity allows for the creation of small capacity production units
located close to raw material sources, thus contributing to regional development;
o the foreign wood product market has been relatively stable;
o 90% of materials can be purchased from inside the country;
o the furniture industry creates ecological products by mainly using local regenerative
resources;
o contributed to the GDP every year;
o the foreign trade balance has always been positive;
Based on a forest area that covers 27.45% of the country and on long-term experience in
the field the Romanian wood industry has continuously developed and diversified; most of
the production facilities in this field of the processing industry were built between the ΄60s -
΄80s and their upgrading started after 1990 and still continues, the results of this being
shown in the trend of technical/economical indicators1.

Furniture production represents the most complex activity in the Romanian wood industry
being, at the same time, recognized as the best wood processing form considering value
added to one cubic meter of raw wood. Diligences imposed on furniture products on the
aspects of accuracy of processing and finishing have led over the last years, to a significant
restructuring of furniture plant management, sustained by a remarkable progress of machine
systems used in manufacturing technologies.
Furniture most preferred on the external market are those made from massive wood (art-
deco and modern with rectangular forms and special finishing), chairs, living room furniture,
living spaces, bedrooms, as well as small furniture (separate pieces of furniture). This
furniture has higher added value.
In order to provide opportunities on foreign and domestic markets by means of harmonious
development, the Romanian furniture industry takes into account the trends that manifest
themselves in the European and world economy, so as to use and profit from wood as a
main raw material source, it being a regenerative resource2.

In a European context Romania's furniture industry with its some 3342 factories employing
some 64879 employees is recognized as being a medium-sized industry which even in 2015
exported furniture to Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Netherlands
etc. and is highly regarded for the competitiveness of the products it manufactures. Most
companies operating in the furniture manufacturing are micro enterprises (77%).

The main types of furniture manufactured in Romania (bedrooms, living rooms, day rooms,
youth rooms, children's rooms, furniture for offices and administrative areas, small furniture,
chairs, etc.) created in a large variety of shapes, types of processing, finishes, material
combinations, etc., have managed to enter Western European markets after 1992, being
very appreciated by consumers3.
The furniture sector had a share of 1.48% in the GDP in 2014 in Romania.
The production of furniture and furniture parts in Romania has recorded 2,227.5 million
EUR in 2014, up by 10% compared to the previous year4.
The pick-up of the residential and office markets was and will continue to be an important
growth engine for the local furniture market after years of decline in the aftermath of the
real estate crash.
Some 47,000 new apartments were delivered in 2015 throughout the country, the highest
level since 2010, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics. Real estate
consultants are estimating that the growth will maintain in 2016 as well, further fueling the
business of local furniture manufacturers. Another important factor behind this overall
positive evolution has been and will continue to be the increased consumer confidence due
to the VAT cut in mid-2015 and the one this January, alongside salary hikes and the interest
rate drop which have increased the purchasing power. All this indicates that 2016 will be
another positive year for the local furniture market.5

The furniture industrial production index achieved in February 2016, compared to February
2015, registered an increase by 13.2%

Furniture exports and imports analysis

Exports

During the period 2010 - 2014, the Romanian exports of furniture have recorded a
continuous growing trend. This increase has been recorded mainly due to the big external
demand of chairs and upholstered products. Romanian-made furniture has an excellent
reputation, especially the medium and high-end products in great demand overseas6.
According to sector experts, the Romanian exports of furniture have registered
approximately 2443577 USD thousand in 2015, down by 9,57% compared to 2014. The
main importing markets for Romanian furniture, lighting, signs and prefabricated buildings
are Germany, France and Italy.

In functie de acticitatile desfasurate, societatile din acest domeniu sunt impartite in 4
categorii:

In a European context Romania's furniture industry with its some 3342 factories employing
some 64879 employees registred a cumulated turnover was approximately 2 billion Euros in
2014.

In aceasta categorie regasim:

Consumer behavior

The majority of furniture manufactures in Romania work on the client’s model and do not
focus on promoting their own models.
Retail value sales saw growth of 5% in 2014, is a sign that both consumer confidence and
disposable income levels in the country are recovering.
Consumers are increasingly interested in sustainability, in the sense that they want their
furniture to be durable. Comfort and how practical the product is will also be key factors in
the selection of furniture pieces. Customers will demand more hardwood furniture, plain
surfaces, and combinations of wood with metal or MDF, as well as handmade products.
There is growing interest in premium and luxury products, as consumers are increasingly
educated and tend to be more influenced by product quality rather than price10.
In January 2016, consumer prices in furniture increased by 0.6%, compared to December
2015.

The development of the furniture industry in Romania constitutes a priority due to the
social needs satisfied by this product, the revenue generated by sector, the contribution to
employment and higher capitalization of wood in accordance with the principles of
sustainable development. Furniture consumption in Romania is more than four times lower
than the EU average due to low purchasing power, therefore over 60% of production is
exported12.
Furniture manufacturers in Romania must identify the main consumption patterns and their
trends on the internal and external market for better satisfying consumer expectations,
which are becoming increasingly selective according to quality, functionality and special
design.
The developing strategy of the furniture industry in Romania seeks to position the sector
among the world leaders in the sector promoting some competitive products, in terms of
quality, design, functionality and price13.

model, vitralii, cristal, oglinzi, plăci ceramice, fier forjat, inox, bambus, trestie, ratan etc).
Piesele separate, aşa-numitul "mic mobilier" completează gama produselor, executate
The Romanian wood furniture production relies mainly on:
 Solid wood
 Plywood
 Wood panels
 MDF
 Wood veneer15

Most Romanians prefer modern furniture, simple and squared, and those with higher
incomes prefer classic pieces of wood and leather.

23 | P a g e
According to the representative of the Association of Furniture Producers, Viorica Răbocea,
Romanians are very selective: „Customers are very demanding and look for high-quality and
durable materials. Most prefer modern furniture, made of panels, which has a lower price
and higher functionality. As well there is currently demand on the market for furniture for
young children and teenagers”.
Furniture market trends are seen in the production line of companies already established in
the field that have made radical changes in their approach and style furniture.
According to the financial possibilities, the preferences of Romanians are:
1. Young people prefer furniture plates, easy to install and maintain. Prices are also lower in
this category.
2. Classic furniture, solid wood and leather have remained favorites of people with higher
financial potential, not affected by the crisis. Costs for furnishing a room in this kind
amounts to over 10.000 euros16.

Preferinte comune in alegerea mobilei

rezistenta a mobilei atunci cand o aleg.
Desi lemnul masiv este in
Aleg in cele din urma calitatea.

28 | P a g e

mentionate.

17

29 | P a g e
avea o bucatarie in tendinte.
Forma mobilei trebuie sa fie cat mai exotica, insa practica si functionala in acelasi timp. In
cazul tapiteriilor predomina materialele ecologice precum canepa, bumbacul. Mobilierul
In continuare bucataria
incorpoata este in topul preferintelor designerilor.

For the last five years, the companies in the furniture manufacturing sector had an increasing turnover. Although for the last year the level of imports and
exports of furniture had a slight decrease, the companies in manufacturing registred positive results mainly due to incresing domestic demand.
