REVIEWER FOR THIRD QUARTERLY EXAMINATION IN SCIENCE 9

A. ORGANIC COMPOPUNDS
1. Characteristics of organic compounds includes:
a. It contains carbon
b. It can be produced by living organisms
c. It can be produced artificially
2. Propene is an example of hydrocarbon compounds that has a double bond in the molecules.
3. Alkynes molecular structure is made up of 3 bonds.
4. Formaldehyde is a compound used to preserve animals.
5. The main use of methane is for fuel.
6. Gasoline is a compound used to fuel cars.

B. MOLES
1. If you consumed a 150-gram chocolate bar labeled 70% cacao, you eat the 105 grams cacao content of the chocolate bar.
2. One mole of any substances is equal to 6.02 x 1023 particles.
3. 11% of Hydrogen is present in water (H20).
4. 50.05% of Sulphur is present in SO2 that can cause acid rain.
5. Mole is a unit used to express the amount of substance in terms of number of particles.
6. The molar mass of diatomic molecules oxygen (O 2) is equal to 32 g/mole.
7. 52.11% of Oxygen is present in a glycerol (C3H8O3)

C. VOLCANOES
1. The silica content of magma determines its explosiveness.
2. The heat flowing from inside of the earth is trapped as a source of electricity in a geothermal power plant.
3. A thick layer volcanic ash ca be heavy enough to collapse the roof of buildings because ash consist of tiny fragments of rocks
that becomes heavy as they pile up.
4. Shield volcanoes are formed by accumulation of lava.
5. Inactive volcanoes have no record of eruption.
6. Kanlaon in Negros Oriental is an example of active volcano in the Philippines
7. One factor associated with the huge volcanic eruption which can cause the decrease in the Earth’s average temperature for
a few years is the volcanic ash.
8. Cinder cone volcanoes is characterized by narrow base and steep slope.
9. Phreatic is a stream driven eruption as the hot rocks come in contact with water. It is short lived, characterized by ash
columns but maybe an onset of a larger eruption.
10. The government agency that monitors the volcanic eruption and activity in the country is the PHILVOCS or the Philippine
Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
11. Vulcanian eruption is characterized by tall eruption that reach up to 20km high with pyroclastic materials flow and ash fall
tephra.
12. Geothermal is the heat from the Earth’s interior which is a source of energy.
13. Viscosity is the property of materials’ resistance to flow, it also describes the liquids’ thickness and stickiness.
14. Crater is a funnel shaped depression at the top of the volcano formed as a result of explosive eruption.
15. Active volcanoes had a record of eruption in the history.
16. Geothermal energy is generated through geothermal heat pumps and geothermal power plants.
17. The following steps are followed to generate electricity in a geothermal power plant:
a. Wells are drilled deep into the Earth to pump steam or hot water to the surface.
b. When the water reaches the surface, the drop in pressure causes the water to turn the steam.
c. The steam spins the turbine, which is connected to a generator that produces electricity.
d. Cooling tower cools the steam which condenses back to water.
e. The cooled water is pumped back into the Earth to begin the process again.

D. CLIMATE
1. Climate is the pattern of weather that occurs in a region over a long period of time.
2. Mountain climbers bring thick jacket when they go up the mountain because the temperature decreases as the altitude
increases.
3. One of the best practice to reduce the effect of climate change is organic farming.
4. Many people visit Baguio City during summer because of the cold weather due to high altitude.
5. During La Nina trade wind becomes stronger.
6. Latitude, altitude and topography are the factors that affect the climate of a particular place.
7. Increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere can cause global warming.
8. Greenhouse effect occurs when there is too much carbon dioxide.
9. Rising of the sea level shows the effect of climate change.
10. One activity that can contribute to global warming is garbage incineration.
11. Coldest places found in the poles because less amount of radiation is receive by these areas.
12. Places with the same latitude but different altitude have different climate because higher altitudes have low temperature.
13. Climate refers to the atmospheric condition over a long period of time.
14. Winward side of the mountain often receives the most precipitation.
