AIR CYCLE MACHINE (ACM) - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
1. General
A. One air cycle machine (ACM) is provided for each cooling pack.
Since the left and right ACM installations are alike, the
following procedure will apply to either ( Ref. Fig. 401 ).
2. Prepare ACM for Removal
A. Open 3351 left, 3451 right, ACM access door.
B. Drain oil from ACM.
3. Remove ACM
A. Remove compressor and turbine inlet and outlet flexible
couplings (Ref 21-55-31 , R/I).
B. If installed, remove and discard O-ring gasket on turbine
outlet assembly. Gasket is obsolete and should not be replaced.
C. Open overheat circuit breaker on panel P6.
D. Remove electrical connector from compressor discharge overheat
switch then unscrew switch from ACM compressor scroll.
E. Support ACM and remove three mounting bolts.
F. Remove ACM.
4. Install ACM
A. Check that flexible coupling sleeve and ring are in place on
ACM connecting ducts.
NOTE : Procedure for installation of flexible couplings depends
on whether a new coupling or old coupling is being used
to connect ducts to ACM. Refer to 21-55-31 , R/I, for
recommended installation procedure.

B. Lift ACM into place and secure with three mounting bolts
( Ref. Fig. 401 ).
C. Move compressor inlet and turbine outlet ducts into place.

D. Move compressor outlet and turbine inlet ducts into place.

E. Check ACM for alignment with ducts. If alignment is necessary
tilt ACM by adding or removing one or more washers between
mount assembly and support bracket as shown in Detail A, Ref.
Fig. 401 .
F. Install flexible coupling assembly at turbine and compressor
inlets and outlets (Ref 21-55-31 , R/I).
G. Using new packing O-ring, install compressor discharge overheat
switch in ACM compressor scroll.
H. Check condition of compressor discharge overheat switch
connector with respect to loose pins or bad contacts and
install on overheat switch if OK.
CAUTION : MAKE SURE THAT CONNECTOR IS NOT DAMAGED DURING
INSTALLATION. THIS CIRCUIT PROVIDES OVERHEAT
PROTECTION AND IS NOT CHECKED DURING INSTALLATION
TEST.

I. Close OVERHEAT circuit breaker.

J. Service ACM with BP Turbo Oil 2197 (Ref Air Cycle Machine
- Servicing).
K. Provide electrical power.
L. Check that all air conditioning and pneumatic systems circuit
breakers are closed.
M. Pressurize pneumatic system using auxiliary power unit (APU)
(Ref Chapter 49).
NOTE : When pressurizing with APU at least one of the isolation
valve switches must be moved to OPEN. The pneumatic
system may also be pressurized with ground pneumatic
cart or engine bleed, but if either is used, isolation
valves and/or engine bleed valves must be positioned
properly for operating air conditioning (Ref Chapter
36).

N. Open entry door or control cabin window.

O. Move applicable A/C PACK switch to ON.

P. Hold applicable cabin temperature selector toward MANUAL COOL

until mix valve position indicator pointer moves to COLD then
return selector to OFF.
Q. Check for leakage at compressor inlet and outlet couplings and
at turbine inlet and outlet couplings. Diffused leakage
allowed, jet blasts are not.
WARNING : DO NOT ATTTEMPT TO REPAIR JET BLAST LEAKAGE WITH
PACKS ON OR PERSONNEL MAY BE INJURED.

R. Move A/C PACK switch to OFF.

S. Remove pneumatic pressure if no longer required.
T. Remove electrical power if no longer required.
U. Close ACM access door.
