Best of all, I'm unaware of any studies showing that soluble fiber
supplements can't simply be taken daily forever with no harmful side
effects or risk of addiction. In fact, soluble fiber has health benefits far
beyond managing IBS. Soluble fiber (from both foods and supplements)
not only normalizes bowel function, it has also been shown to lower LDL
("bad") blood cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, and
minimize colon cancer risks. Soluble fiber also slows the absorption of
fats and carbohydrates into the bloodstream, which improves glycemic
control and helps prevent the formation of free radicals. It also lowers
insulin requirements.
Causes of Constipation
Constipation occurs when the colon absorbs too much water or if the colon's muscle contractions are
slow or sluggish, causing the stool to move through the colon too slowly. As a result, stools can
Lack of exercise, especially in the elderly (a 20 to 30 minute walk every day is good).
○ A lack of physical activity can lead to constipation, although doctors do not know
precisely why. For example, constipation often occurs after an accident or during an
illness when one must stay in bed and cannot exercise. Lack of physical activity is
thought to be one of the reasons constipation is common in older people.

Abuse of laxatives.
○ The common belief that people must have a daily bowel movement has led to self-
medicating with OTC (over-the-counter) laxative products. Although people may feel
relief when they use laxatives, typically they must increase the dose over time because
○ People who ignore the urge to have a bowel movement may eventually stop feeling the
need to have one, which can lead to constipation. Some people delay having a bowel
movement because they do not want to use toilets outside the home. Others ignore the
urge because of emotional stress or because they are too busy. Children may postpone
having a bowel movement because of stressful toilet training or because they do not

Problems with the colon and rectum - Intestinal obstruction, scar tissue (adhesions), diverticulosis,
tumors, colorectal stricture, Hirschsprung disease, or cancer can compress, squeeze, or narrow
○ Idiopathic (of unknown origin) constipation does not respond to standard treatment
○ Functional constipation - the bowel is healthy but not working properly. Functional
constipation is often the result of poor dietary habits and lifestyle. It occurs in both
children and adults and is most common in women. Three types of functional

serious.
Normal may be three times a day or three times a week depending on the person. Some people
naturally have firmer stools than others. Normal bowel habits vary from one person to the next.
However, whenever a significant or prolonged change in bowel habits occurs, check with your doctor.
As food moves through the colon (large intestine), the colon absorbs water from the food while
forming waste products, or stool. Muscle contractions in the colon push the stool toward the rectum.
By the time the stool reaches the rectum, it is solid because most of the water has been absorbed.
Constipation occurs when the colon absorbs too much water or if the colon's muscle contractions are
slow or sluggish, causing the stool to move through the colon too slowly. When stool stays in the
large intestine too long, the intestine removes too much water, and the stool becomes hard and dry.

colon is not enough to expel the stool. This condition, called fecal impaction, occurs most often in
children and older adults. An impaction can be softened with mineral oil taken by mouth and by an
enema. After softening the impaction, the doctor may break up and remove part of the hardened

Eat more fiber foods and drink plenty of water and other liquids (six to eight glasses) such
as fruit and vegetable juices and clear soups. Eating a well balanced diet with enough fiber, 20
to 35 grams each day, recommended by the American Dietetic Association, helps form soft, bulky
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, Americans eat an average of 5 to 14 grams of

The most common cause of constipation is a diet low in fiber and high in fats found in cheese, eggs,
and meats. People who eat plenty of high fiber foods are less likely to become constipated. For
people prone to constipation, limiting foods that have little or no fiber, such as ice cream, cheese,
meat, snacks like chips and pizza, and processed foods such as instant mashed potatoes or already
prepared frozen dinners, is also important. A doctor or dietitian can help plan an appropriate diet.
Fiber, both soluble and insoluble, is the part of fruits, vegetables, and grains that the body cannot
digest.
Soluble Fiber
Soluble fiber dissolves easily in water and takes on a soft, gel like texture in the intestines.
Insoluble Fiber
Insoluble fiber passes through the intestines almost unchanged. The bulk and soft texture of
fiber help prevent hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass.
We need both soluble and insoluble fiber in our diet.
A low fiber diet also plays a key role in constipation among older adults, who may lose interest in
eating and choose convenience foods low in fiber. In addition, difficulties with chewing or swallowing
may force older people to eat soft foods that are processed and low in fiber.
Fiber Supplements
If you can not consume all of the daily serving requirements of high fiber foods, or if you do not get
relief from constipation, fiber supplements, also known as bulk-forming laxatives, may be added to
the diet. You can buy fiber products in a pharmacy or grocery store without a prescription. Some
fiber products are flavored while others are not. Brand names include:
Metamucil
Fiberall
Citrucel
Konsyl
Serutan
Adding too much of a fiber supplement in the diet "too quickly" can cause constipation, diarrhea
and bloating, intestinal gas (flatulence) and other digestive discomforts. This problem can usually be
reduced by increasing fiber in your diet "slowly" over a period of weeks which helps your health
Sunfiber® is a water-soluble dietary fiber produced by a controlled partial enzymatic hydrolysis of Guar beans.
Guar (Cyamopsis Tetragonaloba) is a plant that grows in the semi-arid regions of west and northwest India. It is a hardy,
drought resistance annual bush that is sown in July and harvested in November. The plant grows to a height of about 1.5-
2.0 meters (5-6 feet), vertically stalked, with large leaves and clusters of bean-like pods. Each pod is about 5-8 centimeters
(2.5-3inches) long and has on an average 6-9 small, greyish - white pea shaped seeds.
Guar pods have been a rich source of protein for the Indian people in the form of vegetables since several hundred years.
They are cooked and eaten like string beans.
The outer husk and central germ of the beans are rich in protein and are valuable cattle feed. The endosperm is the
galactomannan and Sunfiber® is produced from this galactomannan.
What is Inulin?
Inulin is the fiber source in FiberChoice fiber supplements. Inulin occurs naturally in thousands of plants
including common fruits, vegetables and grains like bananas, asparagus and rye. The FDA categorizes inulin
as GRAS which stands for Generally Recognized As Safe and is fully accepted as a food ingredient.
