Best of all, I'm unaware of any studies showing that soluble fiber

beyond managing IBS. Soluble fiber (from both foods and supplements)
not only normalizes bowel function, it has also been shown to lower LDL
("bad") blood cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, and
minimize colon cancer risks. Soluble fiber also slows the absorption of
fats and carbohydrates into the bloodstream, which improves glycemic
control and helps prevent the formation of free radicals. It also lowers
insulin requirements.
Causes of Constipation
Constipation occurs when the colon absorbs too much water or if the colon's muscle contractions are

slow or sluggish, causing the stool to move through the colon too slowly. As a result, stools can

become hard and dry. Common causes of constipation are:

 Not eating enough fiber in your diet. Fiber & Constipation

 Not drinking enough liquids (drink eight 8-ounce glasses a day).

 Lack of exercise, especially in the elderly (a 20 to 30 minute walk every day is good).

○ A lack of physical activity can lead to constipation, although doctors do not know

precisely why. For example, constipation often occurs after an accident or during an

illness when one must stay in bed and cannot exercise. Lack of physical activity is
thought to be one of the reasons constipation is common in older people.

Some medications can cause constipation such as:

○ Painkillers with codeine

○ Diuretics, also known as water pills

○ Medicine for depression

○ Some antacids

Feeling a lot of stress.

Taking calcium or iron supplements.

Milk.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) causes abdominal pain, bloating, and constipation or

diarrhea. Constipation & IBS

Abuse of laxatives.

○ The common belief that people must have a daily bowel movement has led to self-

medicating with OTC (over-the-counter) laxative products. Although people may feel

relief when they use laxatives, typically they must increase the dose over time because

the body grows reliant on laxatives in order to have a bowel movement. As a

result,laxatives may become habit-forming.

Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement.

○ People who ignore the urge to have a bowel movement may eventually stop feeling the

need to have one, which can lead to constipation. Some people delay having a bowel
movement because they do not want to use toilets outside the home. Others ignore the

urge because of emotional stress or because they are too busy. Children may postpone

having a bowel movement because of stressful toilet training or because they do not

want to interrupt their play.

Stroke.

Problems with the colon and rectum - Intestinal obstruction, scar tissue (adhesions), diverticulosis,

tumors, colorectal stricture, Hirschsprung disease, or cancer can compress, squeeze, or narrow

the intestine and rectum and cause constipation.

Problems with intestinal function:

○ Idiopathic (of unknown origin) constipation does not respond to standard treatment

○ Functional constipation - the bowel is healthy but not working properly. Functional

constipation is often the result of poor dietary habits and lifestyle. It occurs in both

children and adults and is most common in women. Three types of functional

constipation:

○ Colonic Inertia and Delayed Transit - Colonic inertia and delayed transit are

caused by a decrease in muscle activity in the colon. These syndromes may

affect the entire colon or may be confined to the lower, or sigmoid, colon.

○ Pelvic Floor Dysfunction - Pelvic floor dysfunction is caused by a weakness of

the muscles in the pelvis surrounding the anus and rectum. However, because

this group of muscles is voluntarily controlled to some extent, biofeedback

training is somewhat successful in retraining the muscles to function normally

and improving the ability to have a bowel movement.

Functional constipation that stems from problems in the structure of the anus and rectum is

known as anorectal dysfunction, or anismus. These abnormalities result in an inability to relax

the rectal and anal muscles that allow stool to exit.

Some diseases can cause constipation. Constipation & Certain Diseases

Dehydration.

Pregnancy - women may be constipated because of hormonal changes or because the heavy uterus

compresses the intestine.

Aging may also affect bowel regularity because a slower metabolism results in less intestinal activity

and muscle tone.

People often become constipated when traveling because their normal diet and daily routines are

disrupted.

What is Constipation?
Constipation is the passage (difficulty passing stools -

straining) of small amounts of hard, dry bowel

movements, usually defined as "fewer" than three times

a week.

Almost everyone gets constipated from time to time. In

most cases, it lasts for only a short time and is not

serious.

Some people believe they are constipated, or irregular, if

they do not have a bowel movement every day. There is

no right number of daily or weekly bowel movements.

Normal may be three times a day or three times a week depending on the person. Some people

naturally have firmer stools than others. Normal bowel habits vary from one person to the next.

However, whenever a significant or prolonged change in bowel habits occurs, check with your doctor.

How the Large Intestine (colon) Works

As food moves through the colon (large intestine), the colon absorbs water from the food while

forming waste products, or stool. Muscle contractions in the colon push the stool toward the rectum.

By the time the stool reaches the rectum, it is solid because most of the water has been absorbed.

Constipation occurs when the colon absorbs too much water or if the colon's muscle contractions are

slow or sluggish, causing the stool to move through the colon too slowly. When stool stays in the
large intestine too long, the intestine removes too much water, and the stool becomes hard and dry.

Sometimes constipation can lead to complications. These

complications include * hemorrhoids - caused by straining

to have a bowel movement - or anal fissures - tears in the

skin around the anus - caused when hard stool stretches the

sphincter muscle. (Anal sphincter is the muscle that closes off

the anus)

Constipation may also cause hard stool to pack the intestine

and rectum so tightly that the normal pushing action of the

colon is not enough to expel the stool. This condition, called fecal impaction, occurs most often in

children and older adults. An impaction can be softened with mineral oil taken by mouth and by an
enema. After softening the impaction, the doctor may break up and remove part of the hardened

stool by inserting one or two fingers into the anus.

Laxatives can be dangerous to children and should be given only with a doctor's approval.

Fiber and Constipation

To help relieve symptoms and prevent recurrence of constipation:

Eat more fiber foods and drink plenty of water and other liquids (six to eight glasses) such

as fruit and vegetable juices and clear soups. Eating a well balanced diet with enough fiber, 20

to 35 grams each day, recommended by the American Dietetic Association, helps form soft, bulky

stool. High Fiber Food List

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, Americans eat an average of 5 to 14 grams of

fiber daily. Both children and adults eat too many refined and processed foods from which the

natural fiber has been removed.

High fiber foods include:

 Beans

 Whole grains

 Bran cereals

 Fresh fruits

 Vegetables such as asparagus, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and carrots

The most common cause of constipation is a diet low in fiber and high in fats found in cheese, eggs,

and meats. People who eat plenty of high fiber foods are less likely to become constipated. For

people prone to constipation, limiting foods that have little or no fiber, such as ice cream, cheese,

meat, snacks like chips and pizza, and processed foods such as instant mashed potatoes or already

prepared frozen dinners, is also important. A doctor or dietitian can help plan an appropriate diet.

Fiber, both soluble and insoluble, is the part of fruits, vegetables, and grains that the body cannot

digest.

 Soluble Fiber

Soluble fiber dissolves easily in water and takes on a soft, gel like texture in the intestines.

 Insoluble Fiber

Insoluble fiber passes through the intestines almost unchanged. The bulk and soft texture of

fiber help prevent hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass.
We need both soluble and insoluble fiber in our diet.

A low fiber diet also plays a key role in constipation among older adults, who may lose interest in

eating and choose convenience foods low in fiber. In addition, difficulties with chewing or swallowing

may force older people to eat soft foods that are processed and low in fiber.

Fiber Supplements

If you can not consume all of the daily serving requirements of high fiber foods, or if you do not get

relief from constipation, fiber supplements, also known as bulk-forming laxatives, may be added to

the diet. You can buy fiber products in a pharmacy or grocery store without a prescription. Some

fiber products are flavored while others are not. Brand names include:

 Metamucil

 Fiberall

 Citrucel

 Konsyl

 Serutan

Adding too much of a fiber supplement in the diet "too quickly" can cause constipation, diarrhea

and bloating, intestinal gas (flatulence) and other digestive discomforts. This problem can usually be

reduced by increasing fiber in your diet "slowly" over a period of weeks which helps your health

and your body to adjust.

Sunfiber® is a water-soluble dietary fiber produced by a controlled partial enzymatic hydrolysis of Guar beans.

Guar (Cyamopsis Tetragonaloba) is a plant that grows in the semi-arid regions of west and northwest India. It is a hardy,
drought resistance annual bush that is sown in July and harvested in November. The plant grows to a height of about 1.5-
2.0 meters (5-6 feet), vertically stalked, with large leaves and clusters of bean-like pods. Each pod is about 5-8 centimeters
(2.5-3inches) long and has on an average 6-9 small, greyish - white pea shaped seeds.

Guar pods have been a rich source of protein for the Indian people in the form of vegetables since several hundred years.
They are cooked and eaten like string beans.

The outer husk and central germ of the beans are rich in protein and are valuable cattle feed. The endosperm is the
galactomannan and Sunfiber® is produced from this galactomannan.

Inulin Fiber supplement by Ray Sahelian, M.D. Health benefit of inulin

supplements
Inulin fiber is a carbohydrate belonging to a class of compounds known
as fructans. Because inulin fiber is resistant to digestion in the upper
gastrointestional tract it reaches the large intestine essentially intact,
where it is fermented by indigenous bacteria.
Inulin fiber naturally occurs as a series of oligo- and polysaccharides
with different chain lengths. Inulin fiber is not absorbed from the
gastrointestinal system. For reasons of growing interest in the food and
pet food industries, the short chain inulins have to be separated from
their long chain analogues because their properties (digestibility,
prebiotic activity and health promoting potential, caloric value,
sweetening power, water binding capacity, etc.) differ substantially.

NOW's Inulin is a fructooligosaccharide derived from Chicory

roots and other natural sources of inulin. As a prebiotic, Inulin
fiber stimulates the growth of friendly and healthy intestinal
bacteria which supports good colon health. Since it also has a very low
glycemic index, it is suitable for many people who are on restricted
diets. Add it to your favorite beverage or food. Its taste is comparable to
sugar and can be used as a sugar replacer.

What is Inulin?

Inulin is the fiber source in FiberChoice fiber supplements. Inulin occurs naturally in thousands of plants
including common fruits, vegetables and grains like bananas, asparagus and rye. The FDA categorizes inulin
as GRAS which stands for Generally Recognized As Safe and is fully accepted as a food ingredient.
