LESSON 2

GRAMMAR:

Adjectives are invariable in the singular and the plural.

Ex: This is a good house. These are good houses.
This is a big table. These are big tables.
That's a comfortable bed. Those are comfortable beds.
Joanne is a college student. They are college students.

Demonstrative Pronouns: are used to replace a noun or nouns.

Singular Plural

this these
that those

Give her the book. Give her this. (the book)

Eat the pie. Eat that. (the pie)
Give her the books. Give her these. (the books)
Eat the pies. Eat those. (the pies)

This desk is uncomfortable but that one is comfortable.

This classroom is small but that one is big.

These teachers are young but those are old.

These houses are new but those are old.

This and these are used to show that something is near.

That and those are used to show that something is far from you.

This is a big apartment. These are big apartments.

This is an old house. These are old houses.
That is a new book. Those are new books.

Plural of nouns:

* Consonants B, C, D, etc. + S.

The book is on the desk.

The books are on the desks.
The teacher is in the classroom.
The teachers are in the classrooms.
The student is in the room.
The students are in the rooms.
The lamp is on the ceiling.
The lamps are on the ceilings.

* Vowel + “Y” + “S”.

The subway is in Sao Paulo.

The subways are in Sao Paulo.
The boy is at the school.
The boys are at the school.

* Consonants + “Y” = IES

The secretary is at the office.

The secretaries are at the office.

The story is in the book.

The stories are in the book.

* Vowels before “S” + “SES”.

The bus is here.

The busses are here.

* “FE” = “VES”.

The housewife is at home.

The housewives are at home.

* Irregular Plurals:

The policeman and the salesman are in the bus.

The policemen and the salesmen are married.
The salesman and the saleswoman are at the shop.
The salesmen and the saleswomen are at work.

GRAMMAR:

The book is HERE. The book is THERE.

THERE - is used to indicate PLACE:

The doctor is there, he is not here.

THERE IS / ARE - is used to indicate EXISTENCE:

There is a good student in the class.
There are nice houses here.

There is X There are:

There is - singular nouns / There are - plural nouns

There is a car in the garage.

There's an American at the work.

There is not a dog in the house.

There isn't an actor in the building.

There are comfortable chairs in the classroom.

There are light rooms at the office.

There are not rich bankers at the club.

There aren't dark colors in the classroom.

How many students are there in the classroom?

There are ten students in the classroom.

How many women are there in this class?

There is one woman in this class.
