THE COMPOSITION
Italian musicians have made significant contributions to American wind band music,
especially in the early part of the 20th century. Many immigrants started bands in the eastern
part of the United States. These bands olten toured the country and performed transcriptions
of opera music as well as their own military marches. Unlike the marches of John Philip
Sousa, Karl King and Henry Fillmore, Italian marches are usually more lyrical in style and are
performed at a slower tempo.
A Santa Cecilia is an ttalian march originally published by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company
in 1951. The piece was written for St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music. This new version
retains the characteristic harmonies and style of the original march. Percussion parts are
edited with considerations given to modern march rudimental drumming. Rescoring of the
entire march adds new interest while keeping parts in a comfortable range.
‘The march features a lyrical opening phrase which should be played with a legato tongue.
Atthe trio beginning in measure 58, the sound of clarinets in their chalumeau register should
blend in with horns and euphoniums for a warm, balanced sound. Flutes are optional on the
piecolo solo/soli starting in the pick-up to measure 38 second time through. Ideally, this
section should feature one or more piccolos with the flute section entering both times at
measure 74. Percussion should be light and soft at measure 74 first time through. In this
section, you may wish to eliminate the field drum and simply use a concert snare drum. The
entire band should play the final section beginning at measure 74 second time through as
indicated —boldly and accented. Eighth notes should be played heavier and slightly longer
inthis final statement with a slight broadening of the tempo for a characteristic ending.
Throughout this march, the marcato-like eighth and sixteenth notes should be shaped and
‘well-supported, but not too short. When followed by an eighth rest, the release of the eighth
note sould provide plenty of space before the start of the next beat. Careful attention to the
written dynamic contrasts and interpretive markings throughout will create a precise and.
transparent performance.
