75 Mbps

10MHz in 800MHz band

• Ultrafast resource allocation by • Will be specified in 3GPP Rel.11
scheduler instead of handover or later
• enables competitive peak data
rates on non-contiguous spectrum • Users dynamically get the best • Most operators have significantly less
resources of aggregated carrier spectrum for LTE
• Mitigates the challenge of
fragmented spectrum • Higher average data rates • Even HD streaming services demand
less than 20Mbps

LTE Inter-Band Carrier Aggregation Framework

• Within 3GPP Rel.10 only one Uplink is covered,

and this is also initial focus for 3GPP Rel.11
• This was agreed guidance to work with different band combinations for LTE
Carrier Aggregation in Q3/2011:

1. Start work on CA with one UL

2. Study two UL(s) in later phase of Rel-11

LTE Release 11 Carrier Aggregation between LTE & HSPA
• Now work starting on Release 11 carrier aggregation enhancements
• Release 11 work item raporteur is Nokia
• Nokia Siemens Networks have also submitted a proposal on LTE/HSPA DL carrier
aggregation, to be discussed in September 2011
• The key principle is to aggregate both LTE and HSDPA (with LTE as the uplink) to boost end user
downlink data performance
• More details available if desired. (Ref: RP-110678)

LTE Release 11 priorization
Part of September 2011 RAN plenary is an operator priorization activity for Release 11 work
• Based on this priorization, TSG RAN will then pick the amount of topics fitting to the available
time in the next 6 months
– Necessary action to take to ensure reasonable work looad and keeping planned time-line for Rel.11
– In many cases separate resourcing for LTE and HSPA (parallel meetings)

• Many proposals under discussion for 3GPP Rel.11 work items:

– Carrier Aggregation Enhancements
 Incl. LTE/HSDPA study
– Co-operative multipoint transmisssion (CoMP to become a work item during 2H/2011)
– Further work on Self Organizing Networks and Drive test Minimization
(both were Release 10 topics under NSN leadership)
– Advanced UE receivers

Release 11 HSPA+ Progress
Several topics already on-going
• Eight carrier HSDPA
– Not needed in many of the markets
• Uplink Transmit Diversity
• Uplink MIMO (Study)
• HSDPA multipoint transmission (Study)
– expected to become a work item in September 2011
– Nokia Siemens Networks as the raporteur for this in 3GPP
– Study has progressed well, TR available for information
• Further Enhancements to CELL_FACH
– Smaller finetuning,
reselection issue (3G -> LTE) solved in Rel.10, but can be implemented in earlier releases as well

Release 11 HSPA+ Proposals
No new work items approved as of now, but a number of proposals are on the table:
• Four Branch MIMO transmission for HSDPA
• 64QAM for HSUPA
• HSDPA multiflow data transmission
– being the ‘work item’ phase for HSDPA multipoint transmission

• Enhanced Automatic Neighbour Relation (EANR) for UTRAN

– Follow-up for the Release 10 UTRAN ANR
• CSG ANR for UTRAN
• HSPA Self Optimizing Networks
– It has been agreed to be merged to a common SON work item for LTE and HSPA
(Nokia Siemens Networks lead proposal)

Summary

 LTE-A will as part of 3GPP Rel10, Rel11, etc. provides a “tool box” for
enhancing the performance of the LTE-networks

 Key options to be included in the LTE-A “tool box” are:

1. Carrier Aggregation (specific band combinations)

2. Higher order MIMO (for up to 8 antennas)
3. Relaying (in-band backhaul)
4. HetNet (mixing layers of cells with different sizes)
5. Coordinated multipoint

 Carrier Aggregation likely one of the first parts to be actually deployed,

other parts of specifications may become just “standardisation items”

 Active Antenna Systems (AAS) not tied to LTE-A, but can be a viable
deployment option for enhancing the performance beyond the first phase LTE
