I believe that they are in fact identical

I have measured all the following models:

EPCP33
EPCP23
EPCP24
EPCP30
CG8300
EPCP153

Within the variability of normal mass production they are identical.

Having measured 14 of them now the inductance of the left and right channels on these
cartridges tend to be within 3%. (inductance variation leads to tonal / frequency
response variations between them - causing issues with image stability etc... - the closer
ie the lower the % variation - the better!)

With regards to resistance / impedance they average around 2%

Good but not great stats....

My best one has inductance 354/353mH and Resistance 575/571 ohm (0.3% and 0.8%
respectively) - which is top of the line stats.

My worst is 8.4% and 4.8% variation.

Unfortunately it is pot luck as to which you get !

I picked up a random shop lot of cartridges without styli, measured them all and hand
picked the best one. (Now I need to find a stylus for it)

This is exactly what the major manufacturers do, and is the main difference between a
Grado Gold and a Grado black, or an AT15 and an AT20 .... etc.... (lots of other
examples from many manufacturers)

The stylus makes a big difference - and if you can get your hands on a dozen of them,
and have a multimeter with inductance measurement capability, then you can "cherry
pick" the gems.

bye for now

David

Great post and explains a lot....

Have been studying the VE Cartridge DB for these Technics p-types for a while:

https://www.vinylengine.com/cartridge_da ... rlo=&prhi=

and figured that the differences in specs were solely due to stylus shapes. However, in revealing
some of the various test results, it makes perfect sense......

So imagine the manufacturing line was the same, the best tested cartridges would be mated with
better styli and would result in with published specs as shown in the DB. And thus know which of
the ptypes to seek and target upgrade with better stylus / cantilever construction. Thanks dlm....

Just looked on the JICO website - looks like they have taken down all the SAS styli - maybe they
got too many orders before the April price-rise and have removed them to stop any more orders
being locked in ... damn it.

Damn!

There's a couple of SAS styli still up there but most are gone.

Looks like they took down all the ones that needed making up, and probably left up those they
have current stock of.

Makes sense really...

Hi Chris
As soon as I have my place back to some semblance of order then I'll invite you down for
a listen / comparison if you like?
Then I can always make the treck to the wilds of Banbury for a nose around your set up
too?
Ofcourse I'll need to check my vaccinations before venturing that far north into the wild
country.

Hi Jason

Yes i would be very interested to hear your selection of techie's , especially the SP10 of course .

The Wife and i are trying to sort our place out too as it happen's , yes you are most welcome to see
my old tat .

Seems like the Shibata replacement at TTN is at the moment the best solution?

"best" option is wait for Jico to repost their SAS products in early April.... at an increased price.....

More economical option is the TTN shibata....
