REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

PROBLEM 1: A 6 m simply supported beam is to be designed to have a dimension of 300mm width by 450mm depth. The steel covering is 40 mm from
the center of the reinforcement. If the beam is reinforced with 6pcs bar at the bottom and 2 pcs at the top both of 16 mm diameter steel bar, determine the
following: Use fc’ = 28 MPa and Fy = 276 MPa
a. Depth of compression block.
b. Nominal moment capacity.
c. Ultimate moment capacity.
Problem 2: A 300mmx450mm regular concrete beam is reinforced with 6-25mm diameter bar at the bottom. Use fc’ = 20.7 MPa, Fy = 414.6 MPa and steel
covering of 40 mm. During load calculation it was found out that the actual moment carried by the beam is 150 kN.m.
a. Assuming that the compression bars yields (which is fs’ = fy or s’ = y) determine the depth of compression block.
b. Determine the number of compression bar reinforcement considering the actual design moment.
c. Determine the difference of the steel ratio and check if compression bars really yields or not.
