1. Objective
This document is intended to cover the minimum requirements for the description and justification
of the calculations of the HVAC system, which will be installed in Power Plant for the Dead Sea
Works (DSW) at Sedom. The site is situated next to the Dead Sea in Israel at 385 m below sea level.
The system is divided in two main water subsystems interconnected by means of two units of water
cooling chillers. One of these circuits is the HVAC condensation (or cooling) circuit and the other
one is the chilled water circuit, which at the same time consists of two circuits (primary and
secondary chilled water circuits).
The aim of the condensation circuit is to cause the condensation required by the refrigerant gas
inside the chillers. It is composed by three pumps with a configuration of 3x50% where each pump
is designed to provide an operating flow of 115.6 m3/h. These pumps collect the water cooled in
the DSW plate heat exchangers (TP-27a, pending to be confirmed by DSW) at 32ºC, carry it to the
Chillers Building (where an increase of temperature of 5ºC has been considered) and return it to
the DSW plate heat exchangers (TP-27b, pending to be confirmed by DSW) at 37 ºC.
On the other hand, the aim of the chilled water circuit is to obtain enough cold water able to
extract the thermal load produced both in Electrical Building and Office & WTP Buildings.
The primary circuit is composed of three pumps with a configuration of 3x50% where each pump
is designed to provide an operating and constant flow of 86.3 m3/h. These pumps collect the water
warmed through the buildings at 12ºC as well as the water flow rate that is not demanded by the
buildings, carry it to the Chillers (where a temperature drop of 5ºC has been considered) and
deliver it to the secondary circuit pumps.
The secondary circuit is composed by two pumps with a configuration of 2x100% dedicated to the
Electrical Building and designed to provide an operating flow of 137.7 m3/h and another two
pumps with a configuration of 2x100% dedicated to the Office and WTP Buildings and designed to
provide an operating flow of 34.7 m3/h. These four pumps are equipped with Variable Frequency
Drivers which permits to deliver a variable flow as a function of the required demand in the
buildings in every moment.
Primary and secondary circuits are connected in a common collector which permits to deliver the
excess in flow rate (depending on buildings demand) to the suction of the primary circuit pumps.
Chillers machines are composed by a refrigerant gas cycle with a compressor, an expansion valve
and two heat exchangers (evaporator and condenser) where the heat transfer between the two
mentioned circuits is carried out.

The objective of the fluid flow is to determine the minimum acceptable inside diameter of each
piping that will accommodate the design flow rate while maintaining the pressure drop and flow
velocity within reasonable limits. The diameter can be calculated with the equation (1).

Condensation and chilled water circuits are closed circuits which carry demineralized water (with
corrosion inhibitor) to the chillers and buildings by means of the pumps above described. The correct
operating pressure is ensured with the corresponding buffer tanks.

6. Methodology of calculation
The calculations of pressure loss have been calculated with the software “Pipe-Flo”. It is based on
the following hypothesis.
The pressure loss in a pipe, due to friction, is a function of the fluid flow-rate, fluid density and
viscosity, pipe diameter, pipe surface roughness and the length of the pipe. To estimate the head
loss, Pipe-Flo Software uses Darcy-Weisbach calculation method whose expression is shown in the
equation (2).
f *W 2 * L (2)
∆h =
D * 2g
Where,
∆h : Pressure loss per linear meter of pipe due to the friction (m)
W : Speed of the fluid (m/s)
D : Interior Diameter of the pipe (m)
f : Darcy friction factor
L: Pipe length (m)
The friction factor is dependent on pipe roughness, average speed, pipe diameter and fluid viscosity.
There are different methods to determinate Darcy friction factor. It is usually determinate with
Moody graphic. However there are equations to calculate it according to Reynolds number. An
equation used to determine this factor is the relation of White-Colebrook which is shown in
equation (3).

Re = ρ v D /µ (4)
Where,
ρ: Density of the liquid (kg/m3)
D: Interior diameter of the pipe (m)
v: Speed of the fluid (m/s)
µ: Dynamic viscosity (cP)
There will be a pressure drop due to the valves used to isolate equipment and control the fluid flow.
The pressure drop due to these miscellaneous losses can be estimated as the number of velocity
heads, K, lost at each fitting or valve. A velocity head is,
The total number of velocity head loss is a characteristic of the particular fitting or type of valve used.
6.3. Height
Total Dynamic Head (TDH) is the total equivalent height that a fluid has to be pumped, taking into
account friction losses in the pipe.
(5)
Where,
NPSH available
The pressure at inlet to a pump must be high enough to prevent cavitation occurring in the
pump. Cavitation occurs when bubbles of vapour, or gas, form in the pump casing. Vapour
bubbles will form if the pressure falls below the vapour pressure of the liquid.

The Net Positive Suction Head available, NPSHavail, is the pressure at the pump suction, above
the vapour pressure of the liquid, expressed as head of liquid.
Where,
NPSH required
The Net Positive Suction Head required, NPSHr, is a function of the design parameters of the
pump, and will be specified by the pump manufacturer.
The inlet piping arrangement must be designed to ensure that NPSHa, exceeds NPSHr under all
operating conditions.
Where,
7. Hypothesis of calculation
- Overall oversizing of +10% in total pressure drop in the circuit, until piping isometrics are
developed.
- Distribution plant: estimation based on 88-30-01-130 Plant Layout and Steam Turbine, HRSG
and WTP Racks (Civil documents, see section 4. Reference Documents)
- Pumps elevation inlet/outlet = 0.5 meter (relative zero elevation = plant elevation)
- For the HVAC secondary circuit pumps, a typical limit of 25 m of TDH in 100% operation case
has been stated.
- Set pressure at buffer tank (chilled water side) = 3 barg and buffer tank (condensation water
side) = 1 barg (enough to ensure a proper NPSHa and reasonable working pressures).
- Pressure drops in buildings have been estimated with a second order curve in each case in
order to obtain a pressure drop for each flow rate. Graphics are included in Appendixes. For
the three buildings, in operation case, pressure drops are around 2 bar.

8. Results
It is shown a scheme of the HVAC system, operating conditions with the main data of the system
and a summary table with the calculations of the pumps. An increasing of +10% in flow rate has
been stated to calculate the design conditions.
In addition, different operation cases have been also calculated for the secondary circuit pumps,
which have been equipped with variable frequency drives. Operation cases at 100%, 80%, 60%
and 40% of load have been calculated.
In order to regulate the necessary flow rate in WTP and Offices Buildings, a control valve has been
entered in the simulation. In the real pipe, this valve will be a manual globe valve, which will be
properly open until correct balancing of the circuit during start-up of the plant has been obtained.
The schemes of the subsystems Condesation Water Circuit and Chilled Water Circuit are included in
the Appendixes 1 to 4, for the diverse cases studied.
