SERVICE DELIVERY IN A PRIVATE NURSERY AND PRIMARY SCHOOL, ON THE 10

OF SEPTEMBER, 2009, AT CABATAF NURSERY AND PRIMARY SCHOOL

IJAPO AND IJOKA, AKURE.

Owing to the level of decadence in public school, many Nigerian these days are
turning to private schools for world class quality education. The situation now is that
five out of every six Nigerian pupils are in private schools. This is why in every corner
one turns in major cities, there is one private school or the other. But investigations
have revealed that only a few of these schools are run successfully and profitably.
While many are struggling to provide basic facilities others churn out pupils that are
anything but excellent.

This paper therefore, attempt to provide solution to these major problem

facing private nursery and primary schools especially in the area academics by
suggesting some of the ways effective teaching can help in service delivery and also
try to equip our teachers towards becoming effective teachers.

MEANING OF EFFECTIVE TEACHING

Effective teaching is teaching with a purpose that is, teaching that bring about the
desired result. It is called successful teaching.

ROLES OF EFFECTIVE TEACHING

1. Effective teaching brings about school effectiveness. That is, it helps the school
to turn out pupils who can raise their heads anywhere in the world, pupils who
are thoroughly equipped to face life’s challenges.
2. Effective teaching brings good profit to the school without compromising
standard and morality.
3. It leads to high academic achievement. When teaching is effective, the end
result will be high academic achievement.
4. Effective teaching has overall effect on the school and on the quality of lives of
the teachers and pupils.
5. It brings satisfaction to the parents because they will have good value for their
money.

 TOWARDS BECOMING EFFECTIVE TEACHERS

Effective teaching is not something you achieve by wishing but what you work hard to
get. As teachers, you need to do some investments and make some sacrifices into your
job before you can become effective teachers. You must be ready to exhibit the
following qualities if you must improve your service delivery this new session:

1. Must have strong principle -: teachers must have moral rule or idea in order to
be able to teach the children well because you cannot give what you don’t
have.
2. Must be competent -: as teachers you must be good at your job, read books,
attend seminars or workshops to learn the basics of your job and think on how
you can make your performance better.
3. Must model good behavior -: be ready to develop the right attitude for the job.
Let your attitude be that of equal among equals, be simple. ‘’A really great
person is a simple person.’’
4. Must set high standards -: the standard you set at the beginning of the term
determines your achievement at the end of the term.
5. Must have well defined teaching objectives -: you must have an aim that you
work hard to achieve.
6. Must have passion -: you must have a very strong belief in your job. Only those
teachers who are passionate about their jobs ever become successful. ‘’Don’t
just have a job, have passion for the job.’’
7. Must be committed -: you must have a very strong sense of duty. Work hard
whether you are being watched or not. Know that you are not working to
impress but to help the progress of your pupils, so be willing to commit your
entire being into it. ’’Don’t just exist, excel.’’
8. Must be knowledgeable -: it is often said that ‘’a student is only as
knowledgeable as his teacher.’’ Teachers must read very wide, attend
seminars, workshops and conferences to learn new things about your job,
browse the internet to update yourself and improve your skills. ‘’He who dares
to teach must never cease to learn.’’
9. Must not be complacent -: you must not be too pleased with your previous
achievements that you no longer try to improve.
10. Must learn to prepare for lessons in advance -: it is very important to prepare
for a lesson thoroughly, a badly prepared lesson is not likely to be successful.

 Preparation enables the teacher to pick out just the essentials from the so
much he knows for the pupils to learn.
In conclusion, I want to quickly add that every teacher can become successful if they
know what to do and ultimately do it.
