Scene 1: Importance of Handwashing
Kevin, enters
Kevin: Hi everyone especially to our kapwa katusok! I
am Kevin Mark Gojit, a first year college student taking
up Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, which is
also known as BS Medical Lab Science. I am taking my
studies in UST-LEGAZPI!

Kevin: Together with my classmates we will be
demonstrating the proper way of handwashing and
venipuncture procedure using the ETS.
Remi: Now, we all know that handwashing is very
important in our future profession as medical
technologists.
Diana: It helps in keeping our hands free of any
microbes that may harm our patients.
Bryle: and we all know that our hands is really one of
the dirtiest part of our body.
Chi: As simple as it may sound, the proper way of
handwashing in accordance to WHO is not known by
many.
Dannah: And in the first part of this video presentation
we will be showing the importance of handwashing and
how it is performed!
Bad Practices
Kevin: Most of the time we are guilty of washing our
hands like this
(washes hand with water only)
and like this
(washes hand fast)
Remi: However, that is not the proper way to do it. We
all know that the most common mode of transmission
of pathogen is skin to skin contact via our HANDS.
Chi: And these infections could be prevented with
proper hand hygiene. Hand hygiene reduces the
incidence of healthcare associated infections.
CPT: Hand hygiene is actually the umbrella term for
either handwashing antiseptic handwash, alcohol based
hand rub or surgical hand antisepsis. But for now we
will be demonstrating handwashing which is to be done
especially when your hands are visibly dirty.

TIPS (CPT and CHI)
1. Make sure you remove any of your jewelries
like rings, and watches before you start
handwashing.
2. For girls, it is imperative to tie your hair first
before performing the hand washing
procedures.
3. If you’re feeling unsure whether you performed
the handwashing in the right amount of time,
sing 2 happy birthday songs just to make sure.
Kevin: There you have it kapwa katusok. The
handwashing procedure as stated by the WHO. Please
read the following for additional tips in the said
procedure.

VENIPUNCTURE
Kev: and now for the venipuncture procedure we have
(drum roll) Dannah and Diana! And also the special
participation of Bryle)
Diana: Hello mga katusok. We will perform the proper
venipuncture procedure based on the Phlebotomy
essentials book by Mccall and Tankersley
Step 1: Review and Accesion Test Request AND INSERT NEEDLE

Diana: It is important to check first the test request STEP 11: ESTABLISH BLOOD FLOW, RELEASE
since everything starts with the test request. Make sure TOURNIQUET,
to check the following required information.

STEP 12: FILL, REMOVE, AND MIX TUBES IN ORDER
• Ordering physician’s name
OF DRAW OR FILL SYRINGE
• Patient’s fi rst and last names and middle initial

• Patient’s medical record number (if inpatient)

• Patient’s date of birth or age

• Room number and bed (if inpatient)

• Type of test to be performed

• Date test is to be performed

• Billing information and ICD-9 codes (if outpatient)

• Test status (e.g., timed, fasting, priority)

• Special precautions (e.g., latex sensitivity)
