Research Title:

“UTILIZATION OF CHAYOTE SEEDS AS AN ALTERNATIVE PRESSERVATIVE TO

LENGTHEN THE SHELF-LIFE OF DAMASK ROSE”

Objective:

To test the effectiveness of Chayote seeds as an alternative preservatives to lengthen the

shelf-life of Damask rose.

Hypothesis:

1.There is no significant effect of the mean number of days it will take to lengthen the
shelf-life of Damask rose treated with Chayote seed extract.

2. There is no significant difference on the mean number of days it will take to lengthen
the shelf-life of Damask rose treated with different volumes of Chayote extract.

Research method:

The chayote seeds was cleaned under a running water to remove dirt. The chayote seeds
were immersed in a hot water for 30 minutes ,then put it in a tray in dried room
temperature. The Chayote seeds were cut into tiny cubes and placed in the clean kitchen
blender. Then 150 ml of water was added into the blender , 185 ml of seed extract
solution was produced after straining through a cheese cloth. The extract was
centrifuged in 5 minutes to produce a homogeneous solution. Using centrifugation ,
supernatant liquid and residue were separated. The supernatant liquid was used as
treatment. The measurement of the stem Damask rose was 7 inches long. The
measurement of the Damask rose “xylem” is 0.8 cm. The 10 mL of chayote seeds
supernatant was measured and poured into a glass with Damask rose. The same
procedure was done in 15 mL, 30 mL, and 50 mL supernatant. The different treatment
were exposed at a room temperature and observed.

Major Findings:

Chayote seeds is part of a vegetable that is rich in terms of producing potassium. This
study proved the effect of chayote seeds as a floral preservative. Specifically, it shows the
comparison of different solution and the number of days before the Damask rose got
withered. The result shows the lesser amount of chayote seeds solution is the shelf-life of
the Damask rose.

Conclusion:

The chayote seeds extract is an effective alternative floral preservative. Only small
amount of chayote seeds extract will be used to increase the shelf-life of Damask rose.
The rose of this study would be an eye opener to the people in the community that
chayote seeds is not just a waste but can be an alternative floral preservative. So the
people will recycle this waste material instead of throwing them.
