2018-2019 Science Fair

Assess how you conducted your experiment.

● Please move this document to your s hared Biology folder.

● To complete this, you will need to refer to your project proposal.
● After you answer all the questions, remember to submit the document in Canvas.

Sample size
1. Below, put what you planned for sample size and/or repeated measures (#9 in experimental proposal).

91 people

2. Below, put the actual sample size and/or repeated measures you completed by the deadline (February
5).

90 people

3. If there are differences between your initial plan and what you completed by the deadline, explain
a) why they are different, and
b) what you could have done differently to reach your goal on time.

a. The only reason these two numbers are different is because in one class, someone was sick and
had to go home before I had the chance to test.
b. There isn’t much I can do about a child getting sick.

Procedure
4. Below, paste a copy of your planned steps from your project proposal (#15).

1. Lay out the toys on a table outside of classroom, mixed up with all the boy and all the girl toys. (picture)
2. Lay a blanket or sheet over the toys so they are not visible to the child. (picture)
3. Sit the child down in a chair next to the table.
4. Tell the child about my test.
a. “Hello! My name is Maisie and I’m in 9th grade! Today I am going to ask you a couple of
questions about a topic I am doing a project on. Is that ok?” (get consent)
5. Ask the child their name, age, grade, gender, and write down where the test is taking place and the date.
6. Tell the child not to tell their friends about it.
a. “Can you give me a thumbs up to show me that you won't tell your classmates about this
activity? Thanks! (then a high five and a sticker)”
7. Tell the children that the information is confidential.
a. “Because you said that you won’t tell anyone about this activity, I won’t tell anyone any of your
answers. All your answers have to be your own! Sounds good?”
8. Tell the child that there is no harm.
a. “There is nothing wrong if you want to stop halfway through the test, but I have a feeling you
won’t because it’s actually pretty fun!”
9. Get the timer app ready.
10. Ask the child if they are ready to go.
11. Tell the child the details.
a. “When I reveal the blanket, that there will be 8 toys laying out. All I need you to do is pick three
toys that you really really want to play with. Can you do that? Great! Remember, I won’t tell
anyone the toys you pick. I am going to time you but it’s only for the purpose of the experiment.
You just need to pick three toys and you’ll be done!”
12. Take the blanket off and start timer at the same time.
13. Let the child pick three toys.
14. When they have three toys picked out, stop the timer.
15. Write down anything the child said during or after the test.
16. Give the child a sticker and a high-five. (picture)
17. Start over with the next child.

5. Carefully look over your initial plans. In a numbered or bullet-pointed list below,
a) identify in detail things you actually did differently, and
b) explain why you made each change.

a. The things I did different:

i. Ms. Mandelbaum told me to stop giving the children sticks because when I asked them
what color they wanted, it took them more time to choose what color sticker they wanted
than it did to pick the sticker out. It took too long, so I decided to stop.
ii. Didn’t take that many pictures - I started with Pre-K and most of them didn’t want a picture
or were too shy and so I stopped asking for the next classes and decided to just take
pictures of the toys.

Variables
6. In your proposal, find your standardized (#8) and extraneous variables (#10) and list them in the table
below.
Standardized variables Extraneous variables

1. I will make sure to test equal amounts of boys 1. The mood of the test subjects
and girls from each age group that I test 2. Biological influences
2. The “curiosity” of young children
3. The toys the children are shown
7. Standardized variable review:
Did you successfully standardize all the variables you planned to?
If not, explain why not.
1. After talking to Ms. Sanders, I realized that it is not necessary to test equal amounts of children
because I am finding an average. Also, if I only tested some students and not the others, then the
other students would feel left out and or cry and I don’t want to deal with crying children.
2. If a child is tested and goes back into the classroom, I was worried that they would tell their
classmates. I told them not to tell their classmates before I revealed the toys, and gave them a
sticker for not telling them.
3. I showed the children all the same toys.

8. Extraneous variable review:

Were there other factors (that you did not originally list) that you think could have affected your results?
Identify them and explain your answer.
1. I do not think there are any other factors that could have negatively affected my results.

Impact on Results
9. Think about all the ways the implementation of your experiment differed from your initial plans (your
answers to questions above).
Discuss how these changes may make your project stronger and/or make it weaker (i.e. make your
results more reliable or less reliable).
I think that the idea of my project seemed like a long and hard project but actually being able to interact
with my test subjects instead of doing a form was much more of a fun and reliable experience. I was able
to see their reactions and it made me happy that they were so happy with my experiment.

Reflection on learning
In August, y’all shared your thoughts on what the point of school is. Many of your responses involved
building skills. You may recognize some of them in this list below, which has a few of my top priorities for
skills to build in this class.

10. Read over the skills and indicate with a comment where you feel you are with each, at this point in the
year.

I think I have I’m making progress. I’m struggling: I see This is a very weak
very strong I feel pretty good some improvement area for me. I don’t feel
skills in this about it. but it’s really hard. I’ve improved at all.

Design I am happy with my

experiments ability to design but
Manage time & I think I
long term work organize and
manage my
work
properly and
do projects
that are do a

future when
they are

Work well I enjoy

independently: working by

self-reliance, & than in

Own your own I think that Poli Sci
