Exercises:
1. A ship has a displacement of 1800 tonnes and a KG= 3m. She loads 3400 tonnes of cargo at a
Kg=2.5m, and 400 tonnes of bunkers at a Kg=5.0m. Find the final KG. (2.84m)
2. A ship sails with displacement 3420 tonnes and KG= 3.75m. During the voyage bunkers were
consumed as follows 66 tonnes (Kg=0.45) and 64 tonnes (Kg=2m). Find the KG at the end of
the voyage. (3.85m)
3. A ship has displacement 2000 tonnes and a KG = 4m. She loads 1500 tonnes of cargo
(Kg=6m),3500 tonnes cargo (Kg=5m), and 1520 tonnes of bunkers (Kg=1m). She then
discharges 2000 tonnes of cargo (Kg=2.5m) and consumes 900 tonnes of fuel oil (Kg=0.5m)
during the voyage. Find the KG on arrival at the port of destination. (5.44m)
4. A ship Has a displacement of 3200 tonnes (KG=3m, and KM 5.5m). She then loads 5200
tonnes of cargo (kg=5.2m) Find how much deck cargo having a KG=10m may now be loaded
if the ship is to complete loading with a positive GM= 0.3m. (1466.67 tonnes)
5. A vessel of 8000 tonnes displacement has 75 tonne of cargo on the deck. It is lifted by a
derrick whose head is 10.5m above the centre of gravity of the cargo, and placed in the
lower hold 9m below the deck of its original position. Calculate the shift in the vessel’s
centre of gravity from its original position when the cargo is:
a) Just clear of the deck
b) At the derrick head.
c) in its final position. (0.0844m downwards)
6. A ship arrives in port with displacement 6000 tonnes and KG= 6m. She loads and discharges
the following quantities:
Load: 980 tonnes of cargo KG=4.25m
550 tonnes of cargo KG=6.0m
700 tonnes of cargo KG=1.0m
70 tonnes of cargo KG=12.0m
Discharge: 1250 tonnes of cargo KG=4.5m
675 tonnes of cargo KG=3.5m
420 tonnes of cargo KG=9.0m
during the stay in port 30 tonnes of fuel oil (Kg=1.0m) is consumed. If the final KM is 6.8m,
find the GM on departure. (1.2m)
