Bhadra, Gomukha, Padma and Simha, Sothira, Veera and Sukha. These seven along with
eminent Svastika Constitute the eight, eighty and hundred, however, are asanas in all reckoned.

A yogī should undertake prāṇāyāma as instructed by guru

अथ ाणायामः
अथासने ढे योगी वशी हत मताशनः॥
गु प द टमागण ाणायामान ् सम यसेत ्॥७८॥
Transliteration
atha prāṇāyāmaḥ
athāsane dṛḍhe yogī vaśī hitamitāśanaḥ//
gurūpadiṣṭamārgeṇa prāṇāyāmān samabhyaset//78//

Translation
Having attained perfection in āsana, a yogī, who is self-restrained and who consumes
wholesome and moderate food, should undertake the practice of prāṇāyāma, as instructed by
the guru. 78.

Restraint of Vāyu for Steadiness in Yogī

चले वाते चलं च ं न चले न चलं तथा॥
योगी थाणु वमा नो त ततो वायंु न धयेत ्॥७९॥
Transliteration
cale vāte calaṃ cittaṃ niścale niścalaṃ tathā//
yogī sthāṇutvamāpnoti tato vāyuṃ nirundhayet//79//
Translation
Mind becomes unstable as the breathing increases. When breathing is controlled, mind
becomes stable and a yogī attains steadiness. Therefore the vāyu should be restrained. 79.

Prāṇa should be controlled so life remains in the body

याव वायःु ि थतो दे हे ताव जी वतमु यते॥
मरणं त य न ाि त ततो वायंु नरोधयेत ्॥८०॥
Transliteration
yāvadvāyuḥ sthito dehe tāvajīvitamucyate//
maraṇaṃ tasya niṣkrāntistato vāyuṃ nirodhayet//80//
Translation
Life exists so long as the vāyu (prāṇa) remains in the body. Death means the exit of prāṇa.
Therefore, prāṇa should be controlled. 80.

Prāṇa cannot pass freely through suṣumnā due to morbidities


Apta Pramāṇa: Hatharatnavali (​Chapter 3, Verse 81)

मलाकुलासु नाडीषु मा तो न ्ऐव म यगः॥
कथं याद ु म नभवः काय स धः कथं भवेत ् ।८१।
Transliteration
malākulāsu nāḍīṣu māruto naiva madhyagaḥ//
kathaṃ syādunmanibhavaḥ kāyasiddhiḥ kathaṃ bhavet /81/
Translation
The māruta (prāna) cannot freely pass through the middle nāḍī (suṣumnā) due to morbidities in
it. How then can one attain unmanī state and supernormal bodily powers. 81.

Brahma became free of death through prāṇāyāma

अभवू म ृ यरु हता त मा पवनम यसेत ्॥८२॥
Transliteration
brahmādoyo pi tridaśāḥ pavanābhyāsatatparāḥ//
abhūvanmṛtyurahitāstasmātpavanamabhyaset//82//
Translation
Even the gods like Brahma etc. became free from death through consistent practice of
prāṇāyāma. Therefore, one should practice prāṇāyāma. 82.

ṛjukāyaḥ samāsīnaḥ prāṇāyāmānsamabhyaset//83//
Translation
Adopt siddha, baddha-padma or svastikāsana and keeping the body erect, practice prāṇāyāma.
83.

Draw prāṇa in through candra, then sūrya

प मासनि थतो योगी ाणं च े ण परू येत ्॥
ाणं सय
ू ण चाकृ य परू य वोदरं शन ्ऐः॥८४॥
व धव कु भकं कृ वा पन ु च े ण रे चयेत ्॥
येन यजे ेनापय ू धारये द वरोधतः॥८५।
Transliteration
padmāsanasthito yogī prāṇaṃ candreṇa pūrayet//
prāṇaṃ sūryeṇa cākṛṣya pūrayitvodaraṃ śanaiḥ//84//
vidhivatkumbhakaṃ kṛtvā punaścandreṇa recayet//
yena tyajettenāpūrya dhārayedavirodhataḥ//85/

Translation
Sit in padamāsana, draw prāṇa in through candra (left nostril). Gently draw the prāṇa through
sūrya (right nostril) and fill up the cavity. Retain the air in the prescribed manner and exhale
through candra (left nostril). Inhale through the same nostril through which exhalation is done
and comfortably hold the breath. 84-85.

Visualize sun and moon while inhaling prāṇa

ाणां चे दडया पबेि नय मतं भयू ोऽ यया रे चयेत ्
प वा प गलया समीरणमथो ब वा यजे वामया॥
सय ू ाच मसोरनेन व धना ब ब वयं यायताम ्
शु धा ना डगणा भवि त य मनां मास याद ू वतः ८६
Transliteration
prāṇāṃ cediḍayā pibenniyamitaṃ bhūyo’nyayā recayet
pitvā piṅgalayā samīraṇamatho baddhvā tyajedvāmayā//
sūryācandramasoranena vidhinā bimbadvayaṃ dhyāyatām
śuddhā nāḍigaṇā bhavanti yamināṃ māsatrayādūrdhvataḥ 86
Translation
Regularly inhale prāṇa through iḍā and exhale through the other. Thereafter, draw the air in
through piṅgalā, retain and exhale through the left (nostril). This practice is done through sūrya
and candra, while visualizing the two discs (of the Sun and Moon). The yogīs attain purification
of the group of nāḍīs after three months. 86.

Daily Kumbhaka practice is 80 rounds 4 times a day

ु ारं सम यसेत ्॥८७।

Transliteration
prātarmadhyandine sāyamardharātre ca kumbhakān//
śanairaśītiparyantaṃ caturvāraṃ samabhyaset//87/
Translation
One should practice eighty rounds of kumbhakas increasing gradually four times in a day, in the
morning, noon, evening and midnight. 87.

Lower, medium and superior benefits of prāṇāyāma

Transerliteration
kanīyasi bhavetsvedaḥ kampo bhavati madhyame//
uttiṣṭhatyuttame prāṇarodhe padmāsane muhuḥ//88//
Translation
Lower type of prāṇāyāma generates perspiration, medium causes tremors, while one levitates
during the practice of superior type of prāṇāyāma when adopting padmāsana.88.

Transliteration
jalena śramajatena angamardanamacaret//
Drdhata laghuta capi tatha gatrasya jayate//89//
Translation
One will do well by rubbing the body with the sweat generated by exertion (of prāṇāyāma). This
makes the body strong and light.89.

Prāṇa must be controlled through a gradual practice

यथा संहो गजो या ो भवे व यः शन ्áइः शन ्ऐः॥
तथ ्ऐव से वतो वायभ
ु वे व य शन ्ऐः शन ्ऐः॥९०॥
Transliteration
yathā siṃho gajo vyāghro bhavedvaśyaḥ śanáiḥ śanaiḥ//
tathaiva sevito vāyurbhavedvaśyah śanaiḥ śanaiḥ//90//
Translation
As one can gradually tame a lion, an elephant or a tiger, similarly, prāṇa must be controlled
slowly through a gradual practice. 90.

Incorrect practice of prāṇāyāma causes disorders, proper


practice alleviates disease

ाणायामेन यु तेन सवरोग यो भवेत ्॥
अयु ता यासयोगेन सवरोगसमु भवः॥९१॥
ह का वास च कास च शरःकणा वेदनाः॥
भवि त व वधा रोगाः पवन य य त मात ्॥९२॥

Transliteration
prāṇāyāmena yuktena sarvarogakṣayo bhavet//
ayuktābhyāsayogena sarvarogasamudbhavaḥ//91//
hikkā śvāsaśca kāsaśca śiraḥkarṇākṣivedanāḥ//
bhavanti vividhā rogāḥ pavanasya vyatikramāt//92//

Translation
Proper practice of prāṇāyāma alleviates all the diseases, whereas improper practice of
prāṇāyāma invites all the disorders. 91

An incorrect practice of prāṇāyāma causes several disorders, like -


hiccup, cough,asthma, and pain in the head, ears and eyes, 92.

Inhale and exhale in a judicious manner


Apta Pramāṇa: Hatharatnavali (​Chapter 3, Verse 93)
Original Verse
यु तं यु तम ् यजे वायंु यु तं यु तं परू येत ्॥
यु तं यु तं च ब नीयादे वं स धमवा नय ु ात ्॥९३॥
Transliteration
yuktaṃ yuktam tyajedvāyuṃ yuktaṃ yuktaṃ prapūrayet//
yuktaṃ yuktaṃ ca badhnīyādevaṃ siddhimavāpnuyāt//93//
Translation
To get success, one should inhale, retain and exhale in a very judicious and controlled
manner.93.

Purified nāḍīs produce slimness and lustre of the body

यदा तु नाडीशु धः यात ् तदा च ना न बा यतः॥
काय य कृशता काि तजायते त य नि चतम ्॥९४॥
Transliteration
yadā tu nāḍīśuddhiḥ syāt tadā cihnāni bāhyataḥ//
kāyasya kṛśatā kāntirjāyate tasya niścitam//94//
Translation
When the nāḍīs are purified, the external signs certainly seen are - slimness and lustre of the
body. 94.
Purification of the nāḍīs results in increase in well being,
bodily fire, retaining breath longer
Apta Pramāṇa: Hatharatnavali (​Chapter 3, Verse 95)

यथे टं धारणं वायोरनल य द पनम ्॥
नादा भ यि तरारो यम ् जायते ना डशोधनात ्॥९५॥
Transliteration
yatheṣṭaṃ dhāraṇaṃ vāyoranalasya pradīpanam//s
nādābhivyaktirārogyam jāyate nāḍiśodhanāt//95//
Translation
As a result of purification of the nāḍīs, one is able to retain the breath longer, (one enjoys)
increase in (bodily) fire, manifestation of the internally aroused sound and feeling of well-being.

तॄः पठे दायतः ाणः ाणायामः स उ यते॥९६॥
Transliteration
yogī yājñavalkyenoktam -
savyāhṛtiṃ sapraṇavām gāyatṛīṃ śirasā saha//
tṛiḥ paṭhedāyataḥ prāṇaḥ prāṇāyāmaḥ sa ucyate//96//
Translation
According to Yogī Yājñavalkya​-

During the retention of breath, recite gāyatrī for three times along with vyāhṛtis, praṇava and
śiras. This is called prāṇāyāma. 96.
Note: The technique of prāṇāyāma described in this verse refers to the smārta prāṇāyāma, in
which the prāṇāyāma is accompanied with the recitation of om (praṇava), vyāhṛti, gāyatrī and
śiras. 96.

अ शववचनम ् -
ाणायामपरो योगी सोऽ प व णम ु हे वरः॥
सवदे वमयो योगी त याव ां न कारयेत ्॥९७॥
इत ् ाणायाम न पणम ्॥
Transliteration
atra śivavacanam​ -
prāṇāyāmaparo yogī so’pi viṣṇurmaheśvaraḥ//
sarvadevamayo yogī tasyāvajñāṃ na kārayet//97//
iti prāṇāyāmanirūpaṇam//
Translation
According to Siva -
A yogī, who is devoted to the practice of prāṇāyāma is like Viṣṇu and Maheśvara. Such a yogī is
a representation of all the gods. One should not disrespect such a yogī. 97.
