Switchfoot switches it up
FEEL THE

W hen I first saw that

Switchfoot had
released a new single, my
expectation was either a
forgetful worship ballad
or a cheesy wannabe rock
anthem. I would soon
realize that neither of these
assumptions would prove
to be true.
Looking just at the
instrumentation is a variety
of percussion instruments
(shakers, tambourines,
toms, snares, bass, rim
clicks, snaps and more)
and creative placement for
the non-percussion instru-
ments.

sive sound.

Even with that being
said, the flow of the song
is still felt. The melody
throughout the whole song
is catchy, but the non-per-
cussion instrument fam-
ilies (in orchestras there
are four families strings,
woodwind, brass and per-
cussion) create an appro-
priate presence to balance
out the percussion. I
would define “non-percus-
sion” instruments as bass
guitar, synths, violins,
low brass, piano and back-
ground vocals (the tongue is
important to feature). Each
of these instrument families
are featured in a unique way
and they also add a timbre
contrast, as well as a dynam-
ic contrast which keeps the
listener intrigued.
“Love is the language,
love is your native tongue”
is the statement that captures
the meaning of the song.
I personally think that the
“native tongue” is a metaphor
for our natural instinct to talk
to God since God is love. But
there’s also the argument that
the “native tongue” could
be literal. The song could be
saying that we as humans
need to be more accepting
to other races and not let the
language barrier cause mis-
understandings.
In conclusion, the song
is catchy and fun to listen
to. I rate it a four out of five
flames for its feature of per-
cussion, instrument place-
ment and clever writing.
