A. Introduction – What are Spiritual Gifts?

(1) The Three Types of Spiritual Gifts

According to 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 there are three distinct types of
Spiritual Gifts. Verse 4 says, “Now there are diversities (allotments
or various kinds) of gifts, but the same Spirit.” This refers to the
three kinds of Spiritual Gifts that follow…

MINISTERIAL GIFTS
“There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord”. Verse 5

These are Church ministry offices that are referred to in Ephesians

4: “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets,
some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers”.

These will start off as the motivational gifts of apostleship,

prophecy, evangelism, shepherding and teaching. These gifts are
usually given to those who will move in a ministry office in a
Church, Para-Church or Missions organization.

MOTIVATIONAL GIFTS
“And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who
works in all”. Verse 6

These are basic God-given motivations that all Christians will have
to serve the body of Christ and reach out to the lost world with.

“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to

us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our
faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in
teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with

By Pastor Tim Gibson The above list is not exhaustive and there are many other
timshen@pacific.net.sg motivational gifts as seen in other parts of Scripture. We will be

us will have one to three dominant motivational gifts.

MANIFESTATIONAL GIFTS (2) What the Gifts are not!
“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit
of all”. Verse 7

These nine gifts referred to in verses 8-10 are the power tools of It is important to note that a person may be talented in one area

Such ability becomes a spiritual gift when it meets Biblical criteria

moving in at the time.
b. They are not Christian Responsibilities.
It is also important to realize that the Motivational gifts are not the
same as what all Christians are required to do. There is a
Motivational gift of Giving, but this does not mean we are not to give
unless we have this gift. It is every Christian’s responsibility to give
tithes and offerings but the person with a gift of Giving will give to a
greater degree. We are all to evangelize, show mercy etc. but those
with these gifts will do it to a greater degree.
