1 General
The GRIDCON POCOS compensation system offers maximum functionality in the smallest
space. It consists of individual modules of different sizes. They can be combined with each oth-
er according to requirements so that, in spite of a high level of standardization, they deliver a
customer-specific compensation system with maximum safety.
The GRIDCON POCOS system offers the option to install individual compensation steps,
multi-step systems of identical tuning frequency, and also harmonic filter systems, comprising
multi-frequency compensation steps, with or without step-related switching devices.
The system control and protection extend from meeting the minimum requirement to extensive
protection and control concepts with connection to higher level control systems which enables
remote monitoring and control.
The peak value of those transient overcurrents due to switching operations has to be limited to
100 Inom (RMS-value).
6 Harmonics
The compensation steps are equipped with 7 % protective detuning, therefore the compensa-
tion system is suitable for supply systems containing typical harmonics according IEC 61000-2-
4 class 2.
To the extent that the Act on the Regulation of Matters Pertaining to Water (Water Resources
Act (WHG)) and the Ordinance on Facilities for Handling Substances Hazardous to Water and
on Specialist Firms (Plant Ordinance (VAwS)) are applicable to the medium voltage capacitors
offered, within the meaning of the VAwS the capacitor battery must be classified as “a facility for
manufacturing, treating and using substances hazardous to water”. In this case, particular atten-
tion must be paid to the Appendix to Section 4 (1) of the VAwS subparagraph 1 and subpara-
graph 2.3. The means for meeting the
11 Unbalance Protection
To use an unbalance protection the capacitor bank is assembled in double star connection. A
current transformer mounted between the both star points detects element failures of a capaci-
tor unit.
In case of failure the differential current through the current transformer will be evaluated by an
suitable unbalance relay. Depending on the type of relay, signals for warning and/or trip can be
placed.
12 Internal Fuses
High-voltage power capacitors have a different number of series groups with parallel winding
elements depending on the capacitor’s rated voltage and rated power. Melting of the winding
fuses takes place in this case not due to the network energy, as in low-voltage capacitors, but
due to the stored energy of the parallel windings. The fuses should be selected so high that ac-
tivation of the fuses is guaranteed in the event of a winding fault. Due to a large number of wind-
ings, the capacitance change when a winding fuse is activated is only approximately 2 %.
Functioning winding fuses can extend the lifetime and prevent the capacitor can from splitting
open. The principle of the winding fuse is based on the fact that due to the high number of par-
allel winding elements, after one winding has failed, the remaining windings continue to function
error-free. With very fast aging of the capacitors, the above-mentioned principle may no longer
operate due to the failure of a number of winding elements. With this in mind, it is recommended
to check the capacitance values of the capacitors every 1 to 2 years, and/or to protect the ca-
pacitor battery with an unbalance or phase unbalance monitor.
Due to the operating principle of the winding fuses referred to above, not every capacitor can be
fitted with a winding fuse, particularly those with smaller capacitor powers. If internal fuses are
used, this is stated in the capacitors data schedule above.
13 Tests
Routine tests of the main components of the compensation system(s) such as capacitor units
and reactor coils are included in our price. The relevant test certificates will be sended free of
charge immediately after the tests have been finalised. Type tests are not included.
15 Storage
The system must be stored properly if it is not installed and commissioned immediately after
delivery. The storage conditions must conform to the following requirements:
- the warehouse must be dry, well ventilated, level, vibration-free and free from dust, aggres-
sive and/or explosive gases,
- the temperatures must only range between -20 °C and 45 °C,
- the relative humidity should be < 60%,
the floor of the warehouse must be sufficiently firm and capable of withstanding loads, the per-
missible floor load must not be exceeded.
16 Standards
All materials comply with IEC recommendation and codes or with national standards of practice.
