Power Quality
Compensation System GRIDCON® POCOS®
Ref. 20278455 Technical Description, Page 17

1 General
The GRIDCON POCOS compensation system offers maximum functionality in the smallest
space. It consists of individual modules of different sizes. They can be combined with each oth-
er according to requirements so that, in spite of a high level of standardization, they deliver a
customer-specific compensation system with maximum safety.
The GRIDCON POCOS system offers the option to install individual compensation steps,
multi-step systems of identical tuning frequency, and also harmonic filter systems, comprising
multi-frequency compensation steps, with or without step-related switching devices.
The system control and protection extend from meeting the minimum requirement to extensive
protection and control concepts with connection to higher level control systems which enables
remote monitoring and control.

2 System control, monitoring, protection

The compensation system has extensive protection, monitoring and control equipment. De-
pending on the configuration and system concept, the system is at least equipped with overcur-
rent protection, temperature monitoring and anti-condensation protection.

3 Reactive Power Controller

The system is equipped with a reactive power controller for medium-voltage compensation sys-
tems which ensures connection and disconnection of the capacitor steps according to the reac-
tive power requirement.
In addition to the actual task of the reactive power control system, the controller also fulfils extra
tasks relating to system monitoring and control.
To create the required reactive power, the reactive power controller must be provided with the
summary current of the network transformer(s) and the bus bar voltage.

4 Voltage Design of Capacitor Units

The peaks of overvoltage, that may be tolerated without significant deterioration of the capaci-
tor, depends on its duration, its total number and of the capacitor temperature. The design of
the capacitor unit according to IEC 871-1 from 2014 will be performed by multiplying the design-
voltage (at design-power rating) with the factor of 1.10 (+10 %). The obtained „upper voltage
limit“ is permitted as the network voltage variation for maximum 12 hours within a 24 hour’s day.
The factor of 1.15 (+15 %) is allowed for maximum 30 minutes within a 24 hour’s day. All above
statements are valid only for the fundamental network frequency without considering any har-
monics.

5 Current Design of Capacitor Units

Overcurrents could occur due to increased voltage (at fundamental wave frequency) or due to
Harmonics or due to both.
Capacitors should not be operated with currents which exceed the as follows described maxi-
mum values – except those ones with operating times less than 5 minutes in combination with
increased voltage due to low-load conditions.
Capacitors have to be designed to operate continously at 1.3 p.u. of the nominal current (at
nominal voltage, without any harmonics). Dependet on the actual capacitance of the capacitors
(which is alowed to be maximum 1.15 Cnom) the maximum current can be up to 1.5 Inom.
Those values should consider the summarised effect of harmonics and increased voltage up to
1.1 Unom.
Transient overcurrents with a high amplitude and frequency can occur during switching in ca-
pacitor units, especially if one part of the whole compensation plant (i.e. one capacitor step) will
be switched in to another already energised part of the compensation plant.
 Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen GmbH 2016. 20278455_Technical Description (POCOS).docx
Power Quality
Compensation System GRIDCON® POCOS®
Ref. 20278455 Technical Description, Page 18

The peak value of those transient overcurrents due to switching operations has to be limited to
100 Inom (RMS-value).

6 Harmonics
The compensation steps are equipped with 7 % protective detuning, therefore the compensa-
tion system is suitable for supply systems containing typical harmonics according IEC 61000-2-
4 class 2.

7 Switching Conditions of Capacitors and Filter Circuits

Capacitor banks have to be switched only with circuit breakers or vacuum contactors, which are
capable and also tested for capacitive switching duty. Particularly if de-tuned or filter circuits
have to be switched the selection of the switching devices should be done under consideration
of the increased rated capacitor voltage. To avoid any risks switching devices with higher volt-
age ratings should be provided. If a restrike-free switching cannot be guaranteed, an early fail-
ure and a short service life of the capacitor units may be result.
The vacuum circuit breakers or vacuum contactors used by MR meet these requirements with-
out any restrictions.

8 Use of water-endangering Materials

Capacitors contain a liquid impregnating agent known as JARYLEC C101 or FARADOL 600.
The total quantity of impregnating agent used may be stated on request if an order is placed.

To the extent that the Act on the Regulation of Matters Pertaining to Water (Water Resources
Act (WHG)) and the Ordinance on Facilities for Handling Substances Hazardous to Water and
on Specialist Firms (Plant Ordinance (VAwS)) are applicable to the medium voltage capacitors
offered, within the meaning of the VAwS the capacitor battery must be classified as “a facility for
manufacturing, treating and using substances hazardous to water”. In this case, particular atten-
tion must be paid to the Appendix to Section 4 (1) of the VAwS subparagraph 1 and subpara-
graph 2.3. The means for meeting the

- requirements for the reinforcement and sealing of floor areas,

- requirements for the retention capacity for escaping liquids hazardous to water
- requirements for infrastructural measures of an organizational or technical nature
are not a component part of the technical solution offered but must rather be provided by the
customer.

9 Harmonic filter reactors

The three phase harmonic filter reactors are of iron core type with air gap. They are suitable for
indoor use with an ambient temperature of 50°C. These reactors are vacuum polyester-resin-
impregnated (under permanently heating). The terminals are of flat copper bar type. The har-
monic filter reactor is connected in series between the the capacitor unit and the neutral point
(insulated).
The mentioned losses of the reactors have to be seen as valid with maximum harmonic current
at continuous operation mode. As the harmonic load is non-continuous the losses (as average)
will be below the specified values.

10 Discharging of capacitors, earthing and short-circuiting

Capacitors feature discharge resistors (for the purpose of discharging them after shutdown) that
ensure discharge to a voltage of 75 V within 10 minutes, in accordance with IEC 60871-1. They
can be switched on again after 10 minutes or when the capacitor voltage has dropped to 10% of
the rated voltage. Shorter discharge times are possible on request or can be realised through
additional discharging equipment. If a reactive power controller is used the switch-on delay is
handled by the controller.
Before working on compensation systems they must be earthed using fixed or mobile earthing
equipment and short-circuited, taking account of safety rules.

The following safety rules apply:

1. Disconnect the compensation system.
2. Protect the system against unintentional activation.
3. Wait until the defined discharge time has elapsed.
4. Cover or demarcate active, live parts.
5. Ensure that all previously live parts affected by the work are de energized.
6. Ensure that all previously live parts affected by the work are earthed and short-
circuited.
Note that DC voltage may be present in capacitors and equipment and system components
connected to them after they have been switched off.

11 Unbalance Protection
To use an unbalance protection the capacitor bank is assembled in double star connection. A
current transformer mounted between the both star points detects element failures of a capaci-
tor unit.
In case of failure the differential current through the current transformer will be evaluated by an
suitable unbalance relay. Depending on the type of relay, signals for warning and/or trip can be
placed.

12 Internal Fuses
High-voltage power capacitors have a different number of series groups with parallel winding
elements depending on the capacitor’s rated voltage and rated power. Melting of the winding
fuses takes place in this case not due to the network energy, as in low-voltage capacitors, but
due to the stored energy of the parallel windings. The fuses should be selected so high that ac-
tivation of the fuses is guaranteed in the event of a winding fault. Due to a large number of wind-
ings, the capacitance change when a winding fuse is activated is only approximately 2 %.
Functioning winding fuses can extend the lifetime and prevent the capacitor can from splitting
open. The principle of the winding fuse is based on the fact that due to the high number of par-
allel winding elements, after one winding has failed, the remaining windings continue to function
error-free. With very fast aging of the capacitors, the above-mentioned principle may no longer
operate due to the failure of a number of winding elements. With this in mind, it is recommended
to check the capacitance values of the capacitors every 1 to 2 years, and/or to protect the ca-
pacitor battery with an unbalance or phase unbalance monitor.
Due to the operating principle of the winding fuses referred to above, not every capacitor can be
fitted with a winding fuse, particularly those with smaller capacitor powers. If internal fuses are
used, this is stated in the capacitors data schedule above.

13 Tests
Routine tests of the main components of the compensation system(s) such as capacitor units
and reactor coils are included in our price. The relevant test certificates will be sended free of
charge immediately after the tests have been finalised. Type tests are not included.

14 System and Human Safety

According to DIN EN 61936-1, measures must be agreed between supplier and operator to pre-
vent fault arcs and to ensure personal safety. System and human safety requirements differ
depending on where the system is set up.
As protective measure the above decribed POCOS compensation system is designed with
internal arc qualification (IAC) as per IEC 62271-200: 2003-11 up to a short-circuit current of 40
kA as free-standing system with pressure relief valves.

15 Storage
The system must be stored properly if it is not installed and commissioned immediately after
delivery. The storage conditions must conform to the following requirements:
- the warehouse must be dry, well ventilated, level, vibration-free and free from dust, aggres-
sive and/or explosive gases,
- the temperatures must only range between -20 °C and 45 °C,
- the relative humidity should be < 60%,
the floor of the warehouse must be sufficiently firm and capable of withstanding loads, the per-
missible floor load must not be exceeded.

16 Standards
All materials comply with IEC recommendation and codes or with national standards of practice.
