Q 1:Mixing problems occur quite frequently in chemical industry. We explain here how to solve the
basic model involving a single tank. The tank in Fig. below contains 1000 gal of water in which
initially 100 lb of salt is dissolved. Brine runs in at a rate of 10 gal min, and each gallon contains 5 lb
of dissolved salt. The mixture in the tank is kept uniform by stirring. Brine runs out at 10 gal min. Find
the amount of salt in the tank at any time t.

Q2:A liquid-phase reaction with stoichiometry AB takes place in a continuous well-mixed

10literstirred-tank reactor. A schematic diagram of the process is shown below.

The reactor may be considered perfectly mixed, so that the contents are uniform and the concentration
of A in the product stream equals that inside the tank. The tank is initially filled with a solution that
contains 2.00 mol A/L, and the inlet and outlet flows then begin.
a. Write a balance on species A in the tank and provide an initial condition.
b. CalculateCAS, the steady-state concentration of A in the tank (the value approached ast ∞).
c. Sketch the shape expected for a plot of CAversust.
d. Solve the balance equation for CA(t), check the solution, and draw the actual plot of versus t.
Q3 (a):A well-stirred batch reactor wrapped in an electrical heating mantle is charged with a liquid
reactionmixture. The reactants must be heated from an initial temperature of 25 C to 250 C before the
reactioncan take place at a measurable rate. Use the data given below to determine the time required
for this heating to take place.
Q 3 (b):Water containing 0.5 kg of salt per liter (L) is poured into a tank at a rate of 2 L/min, and the
well-stirred mixture leaves at the same rate. After 10 min, the process is stopped, and fresh water is
poured into the tank at a rate of 2 L/min, with the new mixture leaving at 2 L/min. Determine the
amount (kg) of salt in the tank at the end of 20 min if there were 100 L of pure water initially in the
tank.
Q 4: Consider a tank with a 500 L capacity that initially contains 200 L of water with 100 kg of salt in
solution. Water containing 1 kg of salt/L is entering at a rate of 3 L/min, and the mixture is allowed to
flow out of the tank at a rate of 2 L/min. Determine the amount (kg) of salt in the tank at any time
prior to the instant when the solution begins to overflow. Determine the concentration (kg/L) of salt in
the tank when it is at the point of overflowing. Compare this concentration with the theoretical limiting
concentration if the tank had infinite capacity.
Q 5:Consider the consecutive second order, irreversible reactions occurring in a batch reactor
k1
A +S →X

k2
X +S →Y

If one mole of A and two moles of S are initially added, determine the mole fraction of X remaining
k2
after half the A is consumed. Assume that =2
