SUBJECT: THEODORE ROOSEVOLT PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY AND MUSEUM
DATE: JAN 23, 2018

The following memorandum details survey results from a study conducted by WPA Intelligence among adults in North Dakota. This study was fielded
January 6-8, collecting responses from n=400 adults. The margin of error is ±4.9%.

Overview
Tourism is the 3rd largest industry in the state of North Dakota, despite it having been listed as among the
least visited states in part due to the lack of a signature tourist attraction. A presidential library and museum
dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt has been proposed in part to help fix that. There is both broad
support for increasing tourism in North Dakota as well as building a Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library
and Museum.

Nearly two-thirds of adults (64%) support establishing a Presidential Library and Museum. This support is
mirrored in each Designated Market Area (DMA) – with 64% of adults in the Fargo-Valley City DMA and 63%
of adults in the Minot-Bismarck-Dickinson DMA supporting the library.

Almost three quarters (71%) of adults believe that the library would positively impact North Dakota’s national
reputation. There is similar agreement in each DMA – with 70% in the Fargo-Valley City DMA and 73% in the
Minot-Bismarck-Dickinson DMA.

It is also important to note that 69% of adults believe that there is no better place for a Theodore Roosevelt
Presidential Library and Museum than the state with a national park named for Theodore Roosevelt.

Summary

With broad support for increasing tourism (81%) and establishing a Presidential Library (64%), now is an
excellent time to build a library and museum honoring America’s 26th president. A vast majority of adults not
only believe that a library will increase North Dakota’s reputation (71%) but would also increase tourism
prospects (70%). By building the Presidential Library in North Dakota, the state may benefit from increased
national attention and greater tourism, as well as creating a valuable learning resource for the state’s citizens.

Research Design

WPA Intelligence conducted a study of adults in North Dakota.

WPA selected a random sample of Adults in North Dakota. The sample for this survey was stratified based
on geography, age, gender, and ethnicity. This methodology allows us to avoid post-survey “weighting”
which can reduce the reliability of survey results.

Respondents were contacted by phone via a live telephone operator interview January 6-8, 2019. The study
has a sample size of n=400 Adults with a margin of error of ±4.9% in 95 out of 100 cases.
