UNIT – I
1 (a) Explain the peak value, average value and RMS value of alternating voltage and current
representation.
(b) For the network shown in the figure below, calculate the equivalent resistance between nodes
A and B. A

2 (a) Explain about the series and parallel circuits in electrical network.
(b) With suitable example, state and explain superposition theorem.
UNIT – II
3 (a) What is the principle of operation of DC generator and obtain the emf equation of a d.c generator.
(b) A D.C motor takes an armature current of 110 A at 480 V. The armature circuit resistance is 0.2 .
The machine has 6-poles and the armature is lap connected with 864 conductors. The flux per pole is
0.05 Wb. Calculate: (i) The speed. (ii) The gross torque developed by the armature.

4 (a) Derive the torque equation of a DC motor.
(b) A 4-pole DC generator has a lap wound armature having 400 conductors. It generates an emf of
300 V when the flux per pole is 0.02 Wb. Find the speed of rotation of its armature.
UNIT – III
5 (a) Draw the slip torque characteristics of a three phase induction motor and explain.
(b) The EMF per turn of a single phase 2200/220 V, 50 Hz transformer is 12 V. Calculate the number of
primary and secondary turns and cross sectional area of core for a maximum flux density of
1.5 Tesla.

6 (a) Describe the constructional details of 3-phase alternator.
(b) A 3-phase 50 Hz induction motor is wound for 8 poles. Calculate: (i) The synchronous speed.
(ii) The rotor speed when slip is 3%. (iii) Rotor frequency when rotor runs at 800 rpm.

UNIT – I
7 Draw the circuit diagram of HWR and explain its operation with the help of input and output
waveforms and derive the ripple factor.

8 A half wave rectifier, having a resistive load of 1000 rectifies an alternating voltage of 325 V peak
value and the diode has forward resistance of 100 . Calculate: (i) Peak, average, rms value of
current. (ii) Dc power output. (iii) AC input power (iv) Efficiency of rectifier.

9 Explain the input and output characteristics of a common base transistor configuration.
