Properties of bamboo charcoal

Bamboo is an abundant and cheap natural resource in China (zhao2018). The bamboo
charcoal is become famous in china and japan (zhao2018). Bamboo charcoal was made from
Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) material carbonized in a charcoal kiln.(an2008).
The properties of bamboo charcoal can be examined by using FTIR, Uv-Vis spectroscope, P
MAS-NMR, SEM, and TEM.

Nowadays, charcoal or known as activated carbon is often use as water filtration to

filter contaminants such as small microorganism that can be hazardous to human. Charcoal
filters are useful for removing organic compounds, which are often the cause of changes in
the taste, smell and colour of water. Charcoal is made from the organic matter by a
carbonization process in which the materials are generally pyrolyzed in charcoal kilns by
burning at high temperatures of 440-1000 c with a little oxygen.(lin2009)

Bamboo charcoal is activated carbon with very high surface area and large pore volume.(?)

Bamboo able to store 1.83 kg of carbon this was indicated that bamboo fixes carbon
remarkably in 28 days (lin2010). Bamboo charcoal also have many characteristic and
functions like deodorization, anionic, electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, low surface
resistivity, antibacterial, humidity a

Functions of bamboo charcoal

Bamboo charcoal as deodorization

Bamboo charcoal when blended into PVC to prepare bamboo charcoal or PVC fiber, this
fiber perform to deodorize ammonia gas (lin2007). The strong absorbtivity of bamboo
charcoal also used for deodorization in clothing and hydra-balance material(li2010). The
good absorption capacity of charcoal is suitable for deodorization air.(lin2009)

Bamboo charcoal as improve antibacterial activities

Silver ions as inhibitory and bacterial effect, the ag ions composite material used as water
purifiers or biological protective material. (yang2009). The photocatalytic activity of titanium
dioxide exhibit self-cleaning and disinfecting properties under exposure to UV radiation this
properties can be apply for medical devices, food preparation surfaces, air comditioning
filter, amd sanitary ware surfaces(yang2012). Bamboo charcoal develop as inorganic
compounds for antibacterial silver-containing materials, nanocrystalline silver dressing was
demonstrated in vitro then it effective antifungal agents, antibacterial agents, and anti
bacterial agents for antibiotic -resistant bacteria, the supporting sliver (BC/Ag) and titanium
dioxide supporting silver (TiO2/Ag) this make bamboo charcoal suitable use as water purifier
and biologically-protective materials.( yang2012).

Charcoal had been used for water filtration for centuries as past civilization such as Indian
and Chinese had used bamboo and coconut husk as their main source of activated carbon or
charcoal to remove impurities and hazardous microbial that contained in their water supply.
Due to recent popularity and the rise of demand on charcoal as water filtration, a study was
conducted to analyse the efficiency of charcoal as filter media in water and effect of long
term consumption of water when charcoal is used as water filtration media.

Effect Of Charcoal Filter On The Quality Of Water

Recently, there has been growing concern that microbial health hazards can be
increased by the use of activated carbon filters in domestic water system. Result indicated
that microbial content of filtered and unfiltered water increased to about the same level on
overnight standing. Activated carbon filter were found to have no significant effect on the
number of bacteria present in water as seen in the research of J.V Fiore and R.A Babineau
(1977).

Based on the article published by McBride’s (Jan 2016) when water flows through the
pores of activated carbon media, the contaminants in the water are attracted to the carbon
material in the charcoal filters and adhere to it. By the time water flows out of the other end
of an activated carbon filter, many of the contaminants that were originally in the water will
have stuck to the carbon media and are left behind, thus improving the quality of water.

Long Term Effect on The Consumption of Charcoal Filtered Water

People under medication need to be careful with activated charcoal filtered water as
presence of activated carbon may present in the water. It has been reported by Keller RE
(1990) that when sorbitol is combined with activated charcoal, it can have negative side
effects and this include electrolyte abnormalities, hypernatremia, dehydration,
hypermagnesemia and shock.
