It’s hard to imagine the 45-70 Government as a brand-new round, untested and unproven either on big game or in battle. But that
was the situation back in 1873, when it was introduced. That was a long time ago. Our country wasn’t even 100 years old, and
the Civil War was fresher to Americans back then than 9/11 currently is to us. Giant herds of bison still darkened the Plains, but
the great slaughter of these beasts was in full swing, and before long, fewer than 100 would remain in the wild.
This was the era of the Old West, which, to this day, remains securely fixed in our collective psyche. Our nostalgia for this time
seems boundless. We still yearn for the simplicity, romance, and sheer possibility that the latter part of the 1800s represented to
our young nation—even though the lens through which we view this period is wildly distorted in so many ways.
But one true thing that remains from that time is the 45-70. Benefiting from advances in powder and bullet technology, the
45-70 won’t quit. This round has endured decade after decade, winning over new generations of sportsmen who might initially
be attracted to it as a historical curiosity, only to discover how versatile, and relevant, it remains for hunting big game and
dangerous game today.
MILD BEGINNINGS
It started life as a blackpowder round, the 45 referring to the bullet caliber and the 70 to the weight in grains of the powder
charge. The original projectile was a 405-grain lead bullet that exited the muzzle at 1,350 fps, give or take. Black Hills
Ammunition and other ammo companies make loads today that basically mimic this performance but use smokeless powder,
of course. By today’s standards, this is a mild load, but it was all the original Springfield 1873 trap-door rifles could handle. It
remains a great plinking round for the 45-70 and is fine on big game, provided the shots aren’t very far, since it has a trajectory
like a brick being tossed off a cliff. In strong modern rifle actions—”modern” being a rather subjective term, given the age of
some of the designs that are characterized as such—the 45-70 transforms into a true thumper, capable of tipping over even the
largest game.
KNOCKOUT POWER 
Commercial companies followed suit. For dangerous game and other large critters, there are many high-power +P loads on
the market that push heavy bullets much faster than the original specs. Grizzly Cartridge, for example, has a great 420-grain
flat-nose lead-cast bullet at 1,950 fps that will drill deep through tough hide and heavy bones. By way of comparison, this load
generates 3,547 ft.-lb. of muzzle energy, versus the original 405-grain load’s 1,639 ft.-lb.
ALL-AROUND HUNTER 
Paired with a good lever gun, the 45-70 is a consummate hunting rig for thick brush or timber. The rifles are short and handy, can
be run very fast, and pack a wallop. Lever-actions, being scabbard-friendly, are great for horseback hunts, but they are also
ideal for hunting from a blind.
For everything from elk to grizzlies to hogs, this pairing is an excellent choice. Many states have relaxed their regulations for
primitive weapons seasons, allowing old straight-walled cartridges like the 45-70 to be used where only muzzleloaders or slug
guns had been permitted. Good quality, inexpensive break-action single shots are also an option.
The point being, don’t sell the 45-70 short. It is not only the granddaddy of our centerfire rifle cartridges, it continues to be a
top seller, even though literally hundreds of other cartridges have been introduced since it debuted. Is it going too far to call the
45-70 immortal? I don’t think so. As long as we have rifles that shoot lead from brass casings, the 45-70 will be with us.

MARLIN’S CUSTOM SHOP PUTS A WHOLE NEW SPIN ON THE TRADITIONAL LEVER-ACTION RIFLE.
Winchester lever-actions might get most of the Hollywood glory, but I well recall several appearances of Marlin rifles: Glenn
Ford carried one in Cimarron; and a Marlin saved Brad Pitt’s bacon in Legends of the Fall. Marlin lever guns are definitely cool,
and I have especially admired their spin on the current “guide gun” concept: short barrel; sling swivels; weatherproof finish;
and some type of updated sighting equipment — maybe a ghost-ring reticle, red-dot sight or tow-powered scope. In factory
offerings the “guide gun” chambering is most likely to be the great old 45-70 Govt. Up close it hits like a freight train, and the
Marlin action is strong enough to use either handloads or “specialty loads” that take the old warhorse up into a different power
class. Short, handy and powerful, the “guide gun” is excellent for close-range defense and for digging a wounded bear out of
a thick alder patch. I also see it as a great big tight-timber setup: It will anchor big bucks without excessive meat damage, is
equally good for elk and moose in close cover, and is perfect for the biggest black bears over bait or with hounds.
NOT GRANDAD’S MARLIN 

Marlin currently offers eight versions of its Model 1895 Big Bore in 45-70 Govt: one with a 22” round barrel and half-magazine;
a full-magazine rifle with a 26” octagon barrel; and six versions with 18.5” barrels. From the factory they come in several stock
options: straight or pistol grip, wood, laminate or synthetic. The ultimate from the factory is probably the Model 1895SBL:
stainless and laminate; six-round-capacity tubular magazine; sling swivel studs; oversized finger loop; and a rail mount with post
front and ghost-ring rear aperture.
My “ultimate guide gun” came by way of the Marlin Custom Shop and is based on a Marlin 1895SBL. It’s extremely modern,
what with its laminated stock finished with a desert camouflage Cerakote finish. The metalwork, too, has a flat Cerakote ® finish
in desert tan. The rail mount with ghost-ring aperture is maintained, and the bottom of the enlarged finger loop is wrapped with
nylon parachute cord matching the stock finish. With an 18½” barrel the rifle has a 37” overall length, making it quite handy;
weight is 7 lb., 12 oz. In 45-70 Govt, I’m not sure you’d want it a lot lighter, especially if you intend to shoot heavy loads.
FIT AND FINISH

The Cerakote ® finishing on both stock and metal are perfect, but this facelift is more than skin deep. Completely disassembled,
the internal parts are polished and smoothed. And while it’s often said that you can’t do much about the trigger of most lever-
action rifles, try the trigger pull on one of these custom-shop Marlins and you will instantly feel that isn’t exactly true. The
triggers are crisp and clean; the example I was sent broke at 3 lb, 8 oz.
ON TARGET 
Marlin’s 45-70 Govt rifles have a slow 1:20” rifling twist intended to stabilize the lighter, shorter bullets most commonly used
today. My 1895 Marlin with 26” barrel is shockingly accurate: At 50 yards, it cuts one ragged hole with every load I’ve tried. At
100 yards, the dot starts to subtend to a size that obscures a bit of the target, but I shot multiple 2-inch groups.

impressive. Especially when you consider that there are no “match loads” for the 45-70.
The trigger pull on the “guide gun” is also superb, and loading and unloading were smooth and easy. And while I did notice some
slower velocity on the chronometer, the short, handy guide-gun concept trades off some velocity, but the bullet is still of large
diameter and hits hard.
