|. INTRODUCTION
The JR Traficounter, Model 161 is a portable, self-contained, battery operated vehicle counter,
consisting of a solid state detector, a six volt electro-mechanical counter and two six volt
batteries. The JR 161 is contained in a weatherproof housing with tamper-proof latch and
hinges
The JR 161 is a self-tuning road loop detector, and when connected to an inductive loop, a six
digit electro-mechanical counter records the number of vehicles passing the loop location. It
can be used with loops of various physical sizes, which can range in inductance from 24 to
10000H. :
i. COUNTER INSTALLATION
Model 161 is provided with a loop cable harness and a male MS connector attached to one
end. connect the two wires on the free end to the road loop lead-in wires. Connect the male
MS connector, on the cable, to the female MS connector on the units housing. See Loop
Installation Instructions.
Connect the batteries by connecting the positive (red) and negative (black) leads
Test the batteries by placing the toggle switch in the battery TEST position. If the batteries are
good, the LED (Light Emitting Diode) located above the switch, will glow. Switch the toggle to
the ON position. The JR 161 requires a warm-up period of about thirty seconds to allow the
unit to self-adjust to the read loop frequency,
Chain the counter to a post or fixture with the padlock,
Ill. COUNTER OPERATION
The JR Traficounter, Model 161 can count up to 999,999 before returning to zero.
The Traficounter is ready for operation after the above installation steps are completed and the
counter is logged or reset. Additional tuning is not required. In some applications the Model
161 may require gain and/or delay adjustments. This is explained underlV Controls &
Indicators.

Controls & Indicators
A. Delay
Screwdriver adjust potentiometer. The delay adjust is factory preset for satisfactory
operation in most standard traffic applications. Certain high bed trucks may register twice
(double count). If this problem occurs consistently in a particular application, the delay
potentiometer should be readjusted clockwise until only one count is recorded for each
vehicle. If two tailgating vehicles register as a single vehicle, the delay adjust should be
adjusted counterclockwise until each vehicle register separately. If delay is set maximum
counterclockwise and response is still too slow, check position of gain control,
B. Gain
+ Screwdriver adjust potentiometer. The Gain (sensitivity) adjustment is factory preset at
mid-position for optimum results in most standard traffic applications. In certain special
high gain applications, such as bicycle counter or when using poor loops, it may be
necessary to increase the sensitivity beyondthe factory-preset value. This is accomplished
by adjust the gain potentiometer clockwise. However, it should be cautioned that some
temperature stability might be sacrificed when operating at a very high gain. In addition,
high gain may reduce detector’s response time.
Note: Should false counting occur due to excessive external electrical disturbance, ground
the counter by connecting the green wire in the loop cable to earth ground
