Describing Food
A) Fruits & Vegetables
1. Study with a partner and get a pen and paper for keeping score.
2. Shuffle the pictures and cards in the envelopes provided by your teacher.
3. Put the pictures and cards face down on the table.
4. Take turns to turn over a picture and match it with a vocabulary card. If you match the
picture with the correct vocabulary card, you win a point.

e.g. Şükrü picks up a picture of “tomato” and if he matches it with “tomato” card, he wins 1 point.
Zehra picks up a vocabulary card of “cinnamon” and if she matches it with the picture of “cinnamon”, she
wins a point.

B) Types of food

Study the following food items and put them into the correct categories below:

apple beef butter cabbage carrot cheese
chicken crab cucumber garlic bread lamb
lettuce milk olive onion orange peach
fish salmon shrimp/prawns tomato tuna yogurt

Work in pairs. Student A, select a word. Student B, tell your partner how often you eat/drink this
item. Change roles and repeat the exercise.

Use adverbs of frequency (never, hardly ever, rarely, some times, often) or time expressions
(once / twice / three times a week / month / year; every day/week)

For example: “I hardly ever eat fish” / “I drink milk every day”

Describe the food below with the following adjectives. Use more than one adjective to describe
each picture.

Complete the dialog with the questions below:

What is it made of? What's it like?

Now think about your favorite dish and search for five minutes the ingredients for it. Then, start
to describe it to your partner/class for 30 seconds, but DON’T mention its name. The
class/partner will then guess the dish by asking questions for a maximum of 1 minute.


Tips: You can use some useful words or phrases below.
