CONSUMER PROTECTION -REVIEW OF LITERATURE

A countable number of studies were conducted by various experts in the field of


awareness of consumers. So a brief review of literature on available studies about
awareness of consumers is presented here.

K. Singh, S.Shetty, N. Bhat, A.Sharda, A. Agarwal, and H. Chaudhary conducted a


study titled “AWARENESS OF CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT AMONG
DOCTERS IN UDAIPURCITY, INDIA”. In this study they found out that men had
slightly higher awareness about Consumer Protection Act compared to women among
all professionals. Awareness about Consumer Protection Act is higher among medical
professionals compared to dental professionals. Regarding educational status, post
graduates had higher awareness than undergraduate did in both professionals.

P. R. Loveleen Kaur Chawla conducted a study about “CONSUMER


AWARENESS”. In his study he finds out that TV is the main media which mostly
influence the buying of both male and female respondent. Male are more aware
regarding consumer terminologies and consumer protection laws.

Jatinder Kishtwaria, Shikha Sharma, Avinash Sharma and Aruna Rana conducted
study titled “COMPARITIVE STUDY OF CONSUMER AWARENESS AMONG
MALES AND FEMALES OF KANGRA DISTRICT, HIMACHAL PRADESH”. In
this study he finds out that TV is the main media which mostly influence the buying of
both male and female. There exist significant differences between awareness level of
male and female respondent regarding consumer terminology and consumer protection
laws.

J. Kishtwaria, A. Sharma, N. Vyas and S. Sharma conducted study about “


CONSUMER AWARENESS REGARDING LEGISLATION ORGANISATION AND
CONSUMER PROTECTION LAWS”. In this study they conclude that the main source
of information regarding consumer organization and legislation for males is printed
media and for females, the friends and neighbours. Out of all Consumer Protection
Acts, most of the male and female respondents knew about Standards of Weights and
Measures Act and least aware about Household Electronic Appliance order and display
of price order respectively. More percentage of male respondents knew about the
organizations working at national level than female respondent.

Girish Sharma in his article about 44 CONSUMER AWARENESS” he opined that it


is necessary that the present generation keep themselves well aware and active to be
able to take the ultimate decision in the market. If this is not so then the consumer is
often exploited or cheated by the seller or producer. So it is important to be aware of the
right and duties as consumers and laws provide us protection as consumer. An
economy, in which consumers are aware, can practice their duties and exercise their
freely, efficiency of the sellers and producers will be higher and so the economy will be
more developed.

J.N. Barowalia in his book “COMMENTARY ON CONSUMER PROTECTION


ACT, 1986” has explained each and every provisions of the act in detail and
incorporated in rules framed by the central government and the state governments from
time to time. The law laid down by the Supreme Court, National Commission and state
consumer have been incorporated at the appropriate places in the book, and is a very
comprehensive commentary on the Consumer Protection Act.30

H.C. Chaudhary in his article offers a penetrating insight into the issues
involved in the consumer protection moment. He explains that the government,
business and society shall find it useful in enlightening themselves of the
emerging forces emanating from the buying side of business and understanding
the social, political, economic and psychological aspects of Indian consumer’s
movements.
