II. SAFETY:

Personnel Safety

This portion of the instruction manual is intended to illustrate only basic safety
procedures. Additional precautions may be necessary for safe operation of your plant.
The information contained here is not intended to replace safety codes, insurance
requirements, federal state and local laws, rules and regulations.
Safety of the operator and maintenance personnel is a prime concern. These
paragraphs are presented as a helpful guide to construction equipment personnel, and
reflect some of the daily work problems which they many encounter.
It is the responsibility of the operator to know what specific requirements,
precautions and work area hazards exist, and to discuss them with his supervisor. A
common understanding should be reached by all personnel to assure safe performance in
operating the equipment.
The operator is the key to safe job performance and should study these safety tips
and be aware of basic safety precautions in the prevention of serious injury and damage to
property.

Stop Accidents Before They Stop You!

The safest machines must still be operated with care and with knowledge of its
performance capabilities. The most comprehensive safety program must still be
followed.
Remember that on any job, YOU are the key to safety. Good safety practices not
only protect those around you, they are your own best protection. A careful equipment
operator is the key to safe job performance. Operator safety and the safety of others
depends upon responsible care and judgment in equipment operation. Many accidents are
caused by failure to observe simple safety rules and precautions. Be aware of what is
going on around the work area. Learn to recognize hazards before they become accidents
and to avoid setting up dangerous situations.

Do You Have Knowledge of Working Areas?

Learn – beforehand – as much about your working area as possible:

Be a good housekeeper…keep the area clean, free of oil, grease, rags, cables,
chains, buckets, rocks and other hazards. Keep loose parts in a tool box. Use only non-
flammable solutions for cleaning.
Know the clearances in the work area. A little time spent checking side and
overhead clearances, including power lines, can save a lot of trouble later.
Be careful of dust, smoke or fog, which may obscure your vision.
3

Are You Prepared for Emergencies?

Plan ahead – stay alert – operate sensibly – and you will avoid both having and
causing personal injury and accidental equipment damage. If a careless moment does
cause an emergency – react quickly with the tools and skills at hand. Know the location
of and how to use a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.
Know where to get prompt assistance. Emergencies call for fast action. Be
prepared.

DO NOT STOP YOUR SAFETY PROGRAM WITH THESE GENERAL RULES. BE

EQUALLY CONSCIOUS THAT SPECIFIC WORKING CONDITIONS - AND YOUR
PARTICULAR EQUIPMENT - CAN REQUIRE ADDITIONAL PRECAUTIONS.

Before Starting Check

Equipment not properly prepared for operation is unsafe equipment. Run a

careful check at the beginning of your shift. If you find something that needs attention,
THINK TWICE before deciding to “let it go this time”. Even minor mechanical defects
can lead to personal injury and accidents.
x DO NOT allow unauthorized personnel to operate the plant.
x MAKE SURE all guards and other protective devices are in place, secured and not
damaged.
x CHECK gearboxes: Are they at the correct oil level, and completely leak free?
x NEVER tamper with safety devices.
x CHECK the conveyor thoroughly for visual defects, such as oil leaks, worn grease
hoses, torn conveyor belting, conveyor belt tracking to one side, or loose parts.
x REPORT any defects to your supervisor.

Start Up Safely

x CHECK equipment for warning tags.

x FOLLOW the recommended starting procedure.
x SHUT DOWN immediately if any improper readings are observed.
x TEST all controls for proper functioning.
x LISTEN for and report any unusual noises.
x RE-CHECK alarms or other warning and safety devices.
x DO NOT take a chance with a defective conveyor. REPORT IT TO YOUR
SUPERVISOR.
4

Report a Defective Conveyor

Inspect your conveyor daily. Check for loose, worn or damaged parts. Report or
correct any unsafe conditions immediately and do not operate the conveyor until they
have been corrected.
Even a minor defect can become serious. Report any conveyor defects to your
supervisor.
Consult factory prior to any structural repairs.

Read and Understand

x Warning and caution plates provided on the conveyor.

x Warning and caution notes in the instruction manual.

Warning Tags

Before working on any part of the conveyor, completely shut down the power unit
and tag and lockout the starting controls and any applicable electrical controls so no one
else will start the plant. Attach warning tags to prevent accidents:
x If the conveyor is unsafe for operation.
x If controls are being serviced.
x If the conveyor is being repaired.

Lockout Electrical Main Disconnect

Always lockout all electrical controls before performing any type of maintenance
work on the plant. Provide each maintenance employee with their own personal padlock
and ONE key.

Clothing - Safe Practice

x KEEP HANDS AND CLOTHING AWAY FROM MOVING PARTS. Do not take
chances by wearing loose sleeves, floppy ties, watches and rings.
x WEAR EYE PROTECTION when handling fuel, cleaning fluid, oil or brake fluid.
THESE MATERIALS CAN DAMAGE YOUR EYES.
x WEAR A RESPIRATOR when required.
x WEAR SAFETY GLASSES when drilling, grinding or hammering metal.
x KEEP YOUR POCKETS FREE of objects which can fall out and into the machinery.
x WEAR HARD HAT AND SAFETY SHOES, when required.
x WEAR GLOVES to protect your hands.
5

x WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AND PROTECTIVE CLOTHING when required.

x WEAR EAR PROTECTIVE DEVICES when required or REDUCE exposure time as
required.

Alcoholic Beverages and Medication

x DO NOT use alcoholic beverages before coming to work or while on the job.
x BEWARE of medicines, tranquilizers or other drugs which can make you sleepy or
less alert.

Work Area

x PROMOTE GOOD HOUSEKEEPING, keep the area clean and free of debris and
tools. In winter watch out for ice and snow. Wet spots, especially near electrical
equipment, are dangerous.
x DO NOT let material lay and build up on or around the plant.
x STORE dangerous fluids in a suitable place away from unauthorized personnel.
ALLOW NO SMOKING IN THE AREA!

Equipment

x Use the proper tools; handle tools and heavy parts sensibly.
x Keep all tools and equipment free of dirt, oil and grease. Do not drop or toss them.
x Use hoisting equipment for heavy lifting. Save your back.
x Lower parts, do not drop them.
x To prevent slipping, wipe hand levers and knobs clean of oil or grease.
x Do not use sheaves with cracked rims or spokes.
x Check for missing, cracked or frayed V-belts.
x Check for broken, defective or missing parts and replace them. Keep equipment clean
and free of dirt and oil so you can spot loose or defective parts.
x When using cables to move a load, be sure cables are of adequate size and replace any
cables that are worn, badly frayed, broken or kinked. Check end connections for
wear.

Use Quality Parts

A replacement part for any item should always be of comparable SIZE, TYPE
AND QUALITY - as the part being replaced.
6

Report Necessary Repairs

If your daily check uncovers any item that needs attention – repair, replacement or
adjustment – REPORT IT NOW!
The most minor defect could result in more serious trouble – IF THE
CONVEYOR IS OPERATED.
Only perform the work you are authorized to do. Do not attempt repairs you do
not understand.
Only work on equipment you thoroughly understand—A pressure-loaded part, if
carelessly released, could injure anyone in its path.
Remember you are entrusted with the operation and maintenance of a highly
valuable piece of equipment. TREAT IT AS SUCH!

Plant Safety

The safety procedures mentioned here do not eliminate or cover all the safety
hazards at your job site. However, they do highlight some of the procedures which have
been found through experience to improve safety conditions around plant sites.

Drive Guards

Proper safety precautions start with the initial installation. ALL BELT DRIVES
AND COUPLINGS SHOULD HAVE PROTECTIVE GUARDS AROUND THEM.
Sheaves in particular are designed for maximum rim speeds. If these speeds are
exceeded it is possible that the sheave could explode and cause severe injury or even
death.

Electrical Switch Lockout

THE ELECTRICAL POWER SOURCE FOR THE CONVEYOR SHOULD BE

LOCKED OUT WHENEVER ANYONE IS WORKING ON IT. Each maintenance
person who normally works on the plant should be provided with his own personal
padlock with only one key. When he works on any assembly of the plant, he should use
this padlock to lock out the electrical controls for the plant. It is most important that only
one key be provided for the lock and that key must be in the pocket of the person who is
working on the plant. If more than one person works on the plant, each should have his
own lock and key at separate lockout stations for the controls of the plant. Accidental
start-up of equipment with personnel in the immediate area can be responsible for an
accident on what was supposedly a “clear” machine.
7

Safety Rules

The Excel Conveyor has been designed with safety in mind, but remember as
discussed above, a conveyor will be no safer than the operator operating it. All personnel
should be familiar with these basic rules:
x This conveyor should be operated only by designated, qualified personnel.
x Follow start up procedures.
x Make sure all shields and guards are in place.
x Do not modify or remove any guards.
x Watch out for other people! Keep spectators a safe distance away while operating the
crusher. Do not permit anyone but the operator around the machine while it is in
operation.
x Maintenance should be performed only while the engine is stopped, or electrical
supply locked out.
x Become familiar with all controls before operating the conveyor.
x NEVER walk under a conveyor.
x If repair or maintenance requires being under a conveyor, ALWAYS use loader
or other blocking technique to insure conveyor cannot fall.

Moving and Towing

x Excel conveyors are pit portable only. Do not tow them as they do not meet safety
requirements for highway transportation.
x Use pintle hitch only for pushing or pulling the conveyor when wheels are in straight
position.
x When moving conveyor in radial position, use suitable device and pull on axle only.
Do not push or pull on any part of structure.
x When lifting conveyor to elevated position – use suitable lifting device and cradle the
lattice structure.
x Do not attempt to move conveyor when in radial position except to pull axle in line
with radius curve.
x Do not attempt to push or pull head or tail section in any direction while in radial
position as structural damage will occur.
x ANY IMPROPER MOVING OF THE CONVEYOR CAUSES SIGNIFICANT
STRESS AND IS VERY LIKELY TO CAUSE THE CONVEYOR TO FALL.

III. PARTS

The following drawings show the major components of your Excel equipment.
Each major component will have a description and a list of parts making up that
component. This portion of the manual will be useful as repair parts are required. Excel
stocks most of the components for Excel equipment. To order parts, please furnish the
following information.

1. Your name, company name, ship to location and purchase order number (optional,
unless your company requires it). No shipments will be made on open account unless
the customer has completed an Excel credit application and has been approved for a
credit line by the Excel Accounting Department. All customers with open accounts
will be expected to maintain their accounts within the terms agreed to on the credit
application. Excel expects finance charges accrued due to late payments to be paid.
Shipments for customers over their credit limit or for customers over 60 days late on
any payment or for customers who fail to pay two finance charges will be shipped as
“COD”. This can be inconvenient and cause delays when shipments are drop shipped
from an Excel supplier. Excel encourages its customers to keep their open accounts
in good order.
2. Equipment serial number.
3. Component requiring replacement parts.
4. Part number of the part needing replaced.
5. Every effort will be made to ship parts the same day they are called in, but due to the
availability of the part and the workload this may not always be possible. Emergency
orders should be called in as early as possible and preferably before noon. Scheduling
freight and the time required to process an order may not allow for emergency
shipments called in after noon.

Following is an index showing the major component drawings and the page
number to locate the component and the parts that make up that component. These parts
listings are not inclusive of all the parts that make up your Excel equipment. For parts
not included in this manual, please call the Excel Parts Department for direction and
advice on determining which parts are required in order to make the repairs.

CONVEYOR ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE: FOLLOW ALL APPLICABLE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS (for Crane and chain lifting
limitations.)

1. First connect both head and tail sections together if they are not connected yet.
2. Then string a rope over the troughing idlers and over the return idlers and pull the conveyor
belt through and install the lace kit and then tighten tail pulley until belt has the proper
tension.
3. Lay the axle on top of some blocks and install the wheel and tires then install one of the Sub-
Structures to the square tubing welded on the rear of the axle.
4. Next side the two square tubing’s with the holes for the pins toward the outside of the Sub-
Structure and pin it on the second hole from the bottom using the short pins, then lift it and
pin the tubing with the holes in it to the ears that are welded on the front of the axle.
5. Then hook the chain spreader onto the conveyor frame at and lift it around 15 degree off
level and move it over the sub-structures and axle and pin the tail section sub-structure to the
two angle iron with holes in them on the conveyor tail section using the long spear pin. ( you
will have to lift the sub-structure up to the angle irons on the conveyor with a chain or
cable comealong )
6. Next lower the conveyor as close to the sub-structure as you can and then hook the
comealong to the conveyor frame and sub-structure and lift the conveyor up along with the
sub-structure and pin the head section sub-structure to the two angle iron with holes in them
on the conveyor head section using the long spear pin. ( you will have to lift or lower the
sub-structure to line up the holes on the angle irons on the conveyor and even lift and
lower the conveyor along with sub-structure until they line up. )
7. Finally lower conveyor to its pinned position and disconnect the comealong and the chain
spreader from the conveyor and install the two square tubing conveyor frame supports on top
