CHURCH MISSION
Mount Olive is a church where
Jesus is Lord. God’s love is
transferred through a ministry
of teaching, preaching, praying,
healing, and joyfully giving
while spiritual gifts are being
utilized. Furthermore,
members are taught to value
the Word, true worship, and
love for one another as minds
are renewed, lives are
transformed, and life’s
purposes are found.
2
The History of Mount Olive Missionary
Baptist Church
Through God’s divine grace, in November of 1883, Trustee
Britton Brown, Trustee Lewis Brown, Trustee Daniel Webster, and
Trustee George Matthews purchased one acre of land from C.W.
Collins and his wife, Hattie, to build a structure that would be used
for a church and a public school. The cost of the land at the time
was $40.00. This parcel of land was located in the southwest corner
of the Ingleside Plantation. It was bordered on the south by the
Uniontown/Demopolis road and on the west side by Arcola road.
There is no record showing how long it was before a structure
was actually built on the property, but the property was recorded in
the deed book on April 5, 1884 and was titled “The Colored Baptist
Church of Macon, Alabama.” The name “Macon” was later changed
to “Gallion.”
The present structure is the fourth church building. The
original structure was destroyed by a storm around 1915 during the
pastorate of Reverend William Moten. While the second structure
was being built, another wind storm blew the new church frame off
its blocks. Until the completion of the second church, worship
services were held under a brush harbor. The second Church was
finally completed on April 23, 1916 during the pastorate of
Reverend William Moten who served for eight years. The Deacons
were R. B Shearer, G. Hugh, C. Shearer, J. Gracie, N. Gracie and
W. George. It is believed that this second structure was renamed
Mount Olive Baptist Church.
School was taught in the church until 1927. The Mount
Olive School moved from the church to a building on a plot of land
owned by Mr. Peter Brown which was located ½ mile to the right of
the old Highway 80 East. The current Highway 80 East has
swallowed up the site where the school once sat. The school

3
building had an upstairs that was used as a Masonic Hall. In 1942, a
storm blew the roof off of the school. While the roof was being
rebuilt by Mr. Richard Jones and Mr. Peter Brown, the students
went back to Mount Olive Baptist Church to continue classes. In
1943, students returned the school building that no longer included
an upstairs to be used as a Masonic Hall but instead was a single
story building to serve students in the 1st through 8th grades.
The second structure endured many years, due primarily to
numerous repairs and renovations; however, in 1959 the second
church was torn down, and a third structure was built under the
leadership of Reverend M. S. Strother. Mr. Alfred Black was the
contractor. The Deacons were G. Hughes, C. Shearer, J. Gracie, N.
Gracie, and W. George.
After Reverend Strother’s tenure, Reverends Jones and
Jefferies served until Reverend Jessie Dunnigan was selected as
Pastor and served for a few years. Reverend Layman Harris served
as Pastor after Reverend Dunnigan.
In 1994, renovations to the third structure were made with the
addition of a fellowship hall, classrooms, and a baptistery. These
renovations were done under the leadership of Reverend Laymon
Harris with Bell Construction serving as contractors. The Deacons
were Joe Gracie, N Gracie, Adams, Jeffery, C. Pullum, and Smoot.
After the death of Reverend Harris, Reverend Kenneth Thomas
became Pastor.
The Church went from having service twice a month to every
week under the leadership of Pastor Thomas. In 2001, Reverend
Thomas stepped down and Reverend Phillip White was selected as
the Pulpit Conductor until a pastor could be found.
In June of 2001, Reverend Phillip White was chosen as Pastor.
Brothers Ned Gracie, Freddie Gracie, Ernest Scott, Albert Hughes,
James Gracie, Willie Lawson, and Henry Owens were Deacons at
that time. The Church began focusing on building the family unit.
Under the leadership of Pastor White Mount Olive started an 8:00

4
AM Sunday Morning Worship, Sunday School Outreach Breakfast,
Health Care Ministries, Walk for Life Ministries, and a list of other
ministries to impact the church and community.
In 2003, major improvements were made once again, resulting
in a complete remodeling of the sanctuary. In addition to new
windows being added, new wall to wall carpet, new pews, and
lighting were also added. The project was completed under the
leadership of Pastor White with Mr. Charlie Collier serving as
contractor.
In 2007, more improvements were made, with the addition of
two restrooms in the foyer area and replacing the flooring in the
Fellowship Hall. These repairs were made under the leadership of
Pastor White with Jones Construction serving as contractor.
Again the Church began to turn its attention to ministry; The
Boys to Men Ministry, The Woman to Woman Ministry, American
Cancer Society Hope Lodge Ministry, Radio Ministry, Social Media
Ministry, Blessed Readers Book Club Ministry, Children’s Church,
Financial Literacy Ministry, Couple’s Ministry, New Generation
Ministry and Pastor’s Aide Ministry were all added to the list of
ministries. The church continued to grow, and it was evident that a
new sanctuary was needed.
In 2014 the Church purchased five acres of land from Kelly P.
Barnes, at 12024 U.S. Highway 80 East, Gallion, Alabama to build
a new facility for Worship. This location is just east of the location
at 1267 Mount Olive Road, Gallion, AL. On June 14, 2015, ground
breaking services were held. On July 31, 2016 members entered the
current “Place of Worship.” The sanctuary was built under the
leadership of Pastor Phillip White; Jones Construction served as the
contractor. The Deacons were Albert Hughes, Frank White, Ned
Gracie, Freddie Gracie, Frankie Hall, Joseph Lawson, Calvin
Jordan, Leroy Fikes, John Mullen, Arthur Turner, and Wilson
Johnson.

Church Covenant
Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the
Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, and on the profession of our faith, having
been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost, we do now, in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, most
solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in
Christ.

We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together

in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church, in
knowledge, holiness, and comfort; To promote its prosperity and
spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinance, discipline, and doctrines; To
contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the
expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the gospel
through all nations.

We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions; to

religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and
acquaintances; To walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our
dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment;
To avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger; To abstain from the
sale and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage, and to be zealous in our
efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior.

We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; To

remember each other in prayer; to aid each other in sickness and distress;
to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech; To be
slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, and mindful of
the rules of our Savior to secure it without delay.

We moreover engage that when we remove from this place, we will,

as soon as possible, unite with some other church, where we can carry out
the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word.

The Journey
Join us on this journey of discovering or rediscovering the privilege and the joy of
church membership. You are a church member.

 Be a functioning church member

As a functioning member, I will give. I will serve. I will minister. I will
evangelize. I will study. I will seek to be a blessing to others. I will
remember that “if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one
member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.” (I Cor. 12:26)

 Be a unifying church member

As a unifying member, I will seek to be a source of unity in my church. I
will not be a source of gossip or dissension. I will love my fellow church
members unconditionally. The congregation will be a place of joy and unity.
“Walk worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility and
gentleness, with patience, accepting one another in love, diligently keeping
the unity of the Spirit with the peace that binds us.” (Eph. 4:1-3)

 Be a praying church member

As a praying church member, I will pray for others. I will be the prayer
intercessor for my pastor, his family and other church leaders. I understand
that the pastor’s work is never ending. Serving and leading a church well
expends all of a pastor’s energy. I pray that God would give him the
wisdom, insight, and words to preach. “Devote yourselves to prayer, being
watchful and thankful.” (Col. 4:2)

 Be a healthy church member

As a healthy church member, I will encourage and lead my family to
worship together in church. I’m a part of the church to serve and care for
others. I will find joy in serving the church and those in the church. I will
get excited about church. I will get more involved. “Now you are the body
of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (I Cor. 12:27)

Membership is a gift. When you received the free gift of salvation through
Jesus Christ, you became a part of the body of Christ. This gift must be
treasured.

New Member Lessons

Lesson 1: The New Birth

Lesson 2: Sanctification

Lesson 3: The Fall of Man

Lesson 4: Welcome to The Olive

10
Lesson 1: The New Birth
When God created man in the beginning, He gave him life. Just as long as man did not break his
union with God, his life continued. However, when Adam and Eve sinned, they began to die.
Man does not have life in himself. To have eternal life, he must be born again.

Scriptures for this lesson:

John 10:10; John 14:6; John 3:3-6; John 5:24; John 3:8, Isaiah 53; Acts 8:26-39; Acts 9, Acts
16:13-15; Ezekiel 11:19; Romans 12:2, Romans 8:5; Hebrews 8:10;
I John 3:14; John 15:4-6; John 5:30; Philippians 2:5-8; Acts 16:31

1. Why did Christ come to Earth?

 “I am come that they might have life” – John 10:10

 “I am the way, the truth, and the life” – John 14:6

Man’s eternal destiny depends on God, who is the source of life.

2. How important is the new birth? John 3:3-6

 “It is the new birth experience, which brings about the change from death to life”
– John 5:24

So the penitent sinner must start at the point when Christ gives him eternal life. The new
man is created in righteousness and holiness.

3. Is it possible to analyze everything which takes place when a person is born again?

 “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst
not tell whence it cometh, and it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”
– John 3:8

Being born again is a miracle by the power of God’s Holy Spirit. The Ethiopian listened
to Phillip give an explanation of Isaiah 53, and he was converted (Acts 8:26-39). Paul
had a direct encounter with God on the road to Damascus (Acts 9), and when Paul
preached the gospel, Lydia was converted at Thyatira (Acts 16:13-15).

4. What are the changes that will be seen in the life of a person born again?

 A new heart: “I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you” –
Ezekiel 11:19

 A new mind: “Be not conformed to this world, but be you transformed by the
renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2

11
 Different interests: “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the
flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.” – Romans 8:5

 Law written of in the heart: “I will put my laws into their mind and write them in
their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be my people.” – Hebrews
8:10

 Love for fellow men: “We know that we have passed from death unto life,
because we love the brethren.” – I John 3:14

5. How is the spiritual life of the believer maintained? John 15:4-6

The person who is born again enters into a personal union with Christ. The power of
Christ becomes his and he bears the fruit of love in God’s glory.

6. How is a person born again? There must be recognition on our part that we can do
nothing without Christ’s help. Jesus is our example in this.

 “I can of mine own self do nothing because I seek not mine own will, but the will
of my father which hath sent me.” – John 5:30

The way in which Christ lived in submission to His Father’s will shows how the believer is to
live in submission to Christ (Philippians 2:5-8). Living in Christ is the end of self-will and we
live according to His will.

A person cannot work to receive the new birth. However, surrendering yourself and committing
to Christ involves a struggle. Two men, one a Jew, the other a Gentile, and the keeper of the jail
at Philippi, asked the same question. “What must I do to be saved?” To the Gentile, Paul gave a
very simple answer, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 16:31). To the Jew, Christ’s
answer seemed a bit more complicated when Jesus told him to sell his possessions and give to
the poor. Did Paul make salvation easy, while Christ made it rather difficult? Not at all! Both
are required to surrender completely to Christ. Let us choose to make God’s will ours.

Lesson 2: Sanctification
What is involved in sanctification? Is it something apart from justification? Remember that God
wants to share His righteousness with man. To what extent is God willing to share his
righteousness with a person who accepts Him as Lord? Is the righteousness available only at the
beginning of the Christian life or all the way through? We should remember that salvation is an
experience that never ends. Salvation from the guilt of sin and its condemnation takes place
when a person takes Christ as his Savior. His is justified. Salvation also involves being
delivered from the power of sin. This sanctification is a lifelong process.

Scriptures for this lesson:

Romans 6:1-4; Colossians 3:1-4; Philippians 1:6; John 17:17; Philippians 3:7-9; Galatians 6:14;
Galatians 2:20; Romans 6:3-4; Romans 6:11-14, 17-19; Philippians 3:13-14; Hebrews 12:1-2; I
John 4:8; I John 5:11-13; II Timothy 1:12; John 10:27-29

1. Must the believer be saved from the power of sin?

 “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God
forbid. How shall we that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not,
that so many of us were baptized in Jesus Christ were baptized into His death?
Therefore, we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was
raided up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we walk in the
newness of life.” – Romans 6:1-4

2. To what point is the Christian’s love to be focused?

 “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ
sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things
on earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ,
who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.” –
Colossians 3:1-4

3. Is sanctification a continuing experience?

 “Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you
will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 1:6

Sanctification is a total experience. It begins at conversion but it must continue through life. It
is a lifetime of belonging to Christ, and in that relationship with Christ, the believer will grow.
(John 17:17)

4. What relationship will self have to Christ in a Christian life?

 “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless,
and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus
my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but

13
dung, that I may win Christ. And be found in Him, not having the faith of Christ,
the righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of
Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.” – Philippians 3:7-9, Galatians
6:14

5. How close is the Christian’s relationship to Christ?

 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me:
and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who
loved me, and gave himself for me.” – Galatians 2:20, Romans 6:3-4

We have the possibility of serving two masters. The choice is ours. In the Christian life we are
dead to sin but alive unto God. – Romans 6:11-14; 17-19

6. What is the Christian’s aim in life? (Philippians 3:13-14; Hebrews 12:1-2)

7. Do we need to fear or can we have the assurance of security in Christ? (I John 4:18, I
John 5:11-13, II Timothy 1:12, John 10:27-29

Lesson 3: The Fall of Man
How man sinned.

Sin originated when Lucifer and his angels forsook their allegiance to God. When they were cast
out of heaven (Revelation 12:9) Satan devised a plan to get man to follow him. This is what the
controversy between Christ and Satan is all about. Both are seeking converts.

Scriptures for this lesson:

Genesis 3:14; Genesis 3:6; Romans 5:12; Romans 3:23; I Corinthians 15:22; I John 3:4; Romans
4:15; Romans 3:20; Joshua 24:15; I John 4:8; Hebrews 2:14; I John 3:8; Hebrews 2:14;
Ephesians 1:10-11; Ephesians 6:12-18; Hebrews 1:6; Philippians 2:10

1. What did the serpent do in the Garden of Eden where man was?

 “Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God
made. And he said unto the woman, yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every
tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, we may eat of the fruit
of the trees of the garden, but of the fruit of the tree of which is in the midst of the
garden, God hath said, ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
And the serpent said unto the woman, ye shall not surely die.” – Genesis 3:14

The serpent was the medium by which Satan attracted Eve’s attention. He handled truth loosely.
He knew they could eat of the trees but tried to make it appear God had forbidden this. When
Eve told him that it was only the fruit of the tree in the midst of the garden they were told not to
eat or touch lest they die, then Satan contradicted God and told a lie saying “ye shall not surely
die.”

2. Whom did Adam and Eve believe, God or the serpent?

 “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was
pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she tool of the fruit
and thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”
– Genesis 3:6

3. Because Adam sinned, how did this affect the human race?

 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so
death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” – Romans 5:12

Romans 3:23; I Corinthians 15:22

4. What is sin?

15
 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law; for sin is in transgression
of the law.” – I John 3:4

 “Because the law worketh wrath; for where no law is, there is no transgression.” –
Romans 4:15

Romans 3:20

Disobedience to God’s command was sin in the Garden of Eden and that same principle holds
true today. However, a person need not continue to disobey and sin. Whenever a person sins, he
makes that choice. Joshua 24:15

5. Why did God permit sin?

 Many have been perplexed because sin and its author, Satan, still exist. Some
even charge God with the responsibility for it since He permitted sin. God is
good, merciful, and all powerful, but He is also love. Each created being was
endowed with freedom of choice. God wants people to serve Him because they
choose to do so and not because they cannot do otherwise.

6. Why didn’t God kill the devil when he first sinned and prevent sin from entering into this
world?

 “God is love.” – I John 4:8

The government of God is based on life. If God had destroyed Satan immediately, heavenly
beings would have served him through fear. Free moral agents were given time to judge the
nature of Satan’s rebellion. (Hebrews 2:14; I John 3:8)

Christ’s life and death exposed Satan’s true nature and the results of sin. Thus, in proper time,
God will be able to destroy Satan and sin with the consent of the universe.

7. Will the devil be destroyed?

 “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself
likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had
the power of death, that is, the devil.” – Hebrews 2:14

Since Christ has not yet returned, the time has not come for Satan’s destruction. God is
permitting Satan to run his course. Furthermore, the destruction of the devil will not take place
until everyone has had the opportunity to choose to accept Christ and live forever. Satan’s
destruction will not take place before the earth is recreated after the second coming of Jesus
Christ.

8. Can we be successful in the battle against the devil? If so, how?

16
 “Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might, put on
the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the
devil.” – Ephesians 6:10-11

In Ephesians 6:12-18, the apostle talks of the necessity of putting on the entire armor of God. It
is made up of seven parts and is the assurance of victory. It consists of truth, righteousness, and
the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the bible, and prayer. (Hebrews 1:6) Ultimately, all in the
universe will adore him. (Philippians 2:10)
