Abstract
This report discuses load test done on the three phase induction motor

Introduction
Induction Motors are the most commonly used motors in many applications. These are also
called as Asynchronous Motors, because an induction motor always runs at a speed lower than
synchronous speed. Synchronous speed means the speed of the rotating magnetic field in the
stator.

There basically 2 types of induction motor depending upon the type of input supply

1. Single phase induction motor

2. Three phase induction motor

Or they can be divided according to type of rotor - (i) Squirrel cage motor and (ii) Slip ring
motor or wound type
An induction motor has basically two parts: Stator and Rotor.

Objective
The experimental objective was investigate the performance characteristic of a 3phase squirrel
cage induction motor.

Materials
Machine no.2—3 phase induction motor

2 wattmeter (0—3,000W)

1 ammeter-moving iron (0-150v)

1 voltmeter- moving iron (0—150V)

Procedure
1. Firstly we were told to connect the all the conductors as shown below before we proceed
with the experiment

2. Secondly the lab technician approved of our connection

3. We were told to start the motor and wait for the machine to warm up for a few minutes.
4. The machine was loaded at an approximate 25% overload and one newton-meter torque;
at each increment we recorded input power, voltage, speed and speed.
5. From the recorded results we calculated total input power, power output, power factor
and efficiency as illustrated in the follow up results below.

Data
W1 W2 Line voltage Line current Torque Speed
590 108.7 4 0 1422
750 108.2 4.8 1 1415
950 108 5.2 2 1395
953 107.5 6 3 1390
1100 107.5 6.8 4 1380
2150 106.8 10 4.5 1280
Results
Calculated results

Total input power Output power Power factor Efficiency %

W1 + W2
240 0 0.31 0
550 148.2 0.61 26.9
1100 292.02 1.13 28.5
1178 436.46 1.05 37.06
1400 578.28 1.10 41.30
3250 603.13 1.75 18.55

Conclusion
From the calculated data and from the observation point of view we can draw a conclusion that
As the load on the induction motor increases,
1. The output of the motor increases.
2. The power factor increases.
3. The efficiency increase up to certain load and then decreases.
4. The speed decreases marginally.
5. The input current increases.
