Desired Results (what will students learn?)

Math Program of Studies- Kindergarten
General Outcome:

Lesson 2. Listen to their peers ideas and decisions about their text preferences
Objective(s) 3. Represent the class findings with me on a large graph
4. Represent our class data on their own personal graph
5. Color in the number of rectangles needed to represent the number of students for each book

Assessment Evidence (how will you determine student learning?)

Formative  Observations during class work on the large graphs
 Verbal questions and responses
Assessment  Individual graphing papers which will be glued in the math side of their visual journals

Learning Experiences/Opportunities (what will students do to learn it?)

 Individual sized graphs (one for each
child)
 2 Large Graphs (1 for Blue team, 1 for
Green Team)
 Pictures of books to glue on the large
Resources graphs
to Prepare  The original Gingerbread Man story
 The Gingerbread Girl
 The Ninjabread Man
 Pencil Crayons/Crayons
 Pencils
Time Allotment Content/Description Notes
Introduction:
 Fill in grade 5 helpers briefly of their roll
 Have all students on the carpet ready to listen
 Have large graph ready to fill in for each class
 Today we are going to be talking about which one of the three stories is our favorite- we
can all choose different favorite books but it has to be one of these 3 just for the graph.
 Does anyone know what we use graphs for? (Recording data- define this)
Activity #1: Class Graph
Reminder of each book
Have students tell be a bit about the books
Think in your head about which of the 3 books was your favorite
Pair and share on the carpet to share with a friend which book was your favorite and why
Then we will physically move into 3 groups (one for each book) and stand where our
favorite book is
 We will then count (as a class) the number of students in each group
Once each group is counted we will fill in our class graph using crayons (1 square per
person)
 We will talk about what this data (define word- information) means and how we can apply
it to our individual graphs.
 Which book was the most popular? Which book was the least popular?

Transition Cues
 Meet me at table 2 for our math activity.
Activity #2: Demonstrating the Individual Graph Activity
Teacher Prompts/Cues/Explanations
 I will show them that their individual graphs look like our large class graph
 We will talk about coloring in the lines of the graph
 I will remind them to use our class graph as a clue on how to fill it in.
 Utilizing math language “most” and “least” (More & Less)
Transition Cues
 I will utilize the Name table cards for who is sitting at what table
 They will need to grab a graphing sheet and find their table to begin their work.
 I will be circulating to see if students are able to follow the steps or need extra help
 Our grade 5 math helpers will also be assisting
