Social Justice Camp – a first for St John’s College!

Since “social justice” is a broad and often

heavy topic, the week’s curriculum fo-
cused mainly on local issues that impact
the lives of the students themselves. Each
new topic was introduced using games
and activities, with the students often
teaching and learning from one another.
The camp would not have been pos-
sible without a generous grant from the
Diocese of Rupert’s Land. Students from
low income families were supported
by a school principal and three College
Fellows. Thank you to everyone who For five days in July the College was filled with the sounds of 12 young teens

William Aldridge grad 1900.
Congratulations to Ian Park on 20 years of service at the College! Ian be-
came the Food Services Manager in July of 1996 and brought with him a
wealth of experience in the catering industry as an Executive Chef. Ian has
established the Daily Bread Café as one of the best places on the university
campus to gather over some great food. I’m sure everyone who has eaten
in the Café has a favourite dish they enjoy time and time again. He believes
that the coming together over food and drink is important in sustaining
something that defines us: our community here at the College!
As we near the opening of the 150th year of the College, we know that
Ian Park shares a lengthy family history of Johnians! On his mother’s
side, his great grandfather William Aldridge graduated in 1900. Then on
his father’s side, great grandfather Robert Elfinstone Park ’38 served
as Priest to many parishes in Winnipeg and at St John’s Cathedral. Then
grandfather Frank Ison ’28 and great aunt Anne (Park) Lawson who
attended one year in 1939. Ian’s father Robert Park ’50, mother (Lady
Stick) Lisa “Betty” Ison ’49, aunt Rosemary (Ison) Wallace ’52, aunt
Doreen (Ison) Jones ’53, uncle James Ison ’63 and cousin Stephen
Park ’68. Ian’s father had both his brothers John E. Park ‘38 and Charles
Park (date unknown) attend St John’s College but had their education
interrupted to serve in the war. Now Ian and Janice’s son Owen Park is
currently a 3rd year student and will soon be adding his name to the many
