ANNEX 2.- BENDING MOMENTS, AXIAL STRESSES AND SHEAR STRESSES AT THE LINING
1. INTRODUCTION
In some sections of the Portillo Tunnel that is one of the main two branches of La Confluencia
Hydroelectric Power Plant, the presence of expansive rocks has been detected.
These expansive materials has been detected after an intensive site investigation collecting
samples all along the tunnel and testing them in order to precise the presence of swelling
material as well as its swelling capacity.
The existence of swelling rocks could cause severe damages to the support of the tunnel and
the closure of the section considering long term behaviour.
To prevent this long term effect a lining of reinforced concrete has been designed, able to
support high pressures due to the swelling processes.
This document presents the detailed report report with the results obtained in the calculus done
to design the reinforcement lining.
The owner (HLC) has made three different proposals of tunnel zones to be reinforced using a
secondary concrete lining. These three proposals were done:
Table 2.I shows the most detailed zoning provided by HLC (second proposal), as well as the
suggested design pressures.
In order to analyze this zoning, between last 8th and 9th December 2011 a site visit to Portillo
tunnel was done by Ludger Oligmüller and José-Miguel Galera.
Thursday 8th Dec.: analysis of the data of the 11 recommended reinforcement zones by
Tinguiririca.
Thursday 8th Dec.: meeting with Tinguiririca staff in which they explain us the criteria
followed to establish the zones.
Friday 9th Dec.: joined visit to the areas between P4 and P1 in the morning and between
P1 and PP after lunch.
Friday 9th Dec.: final meeting CHT – HLC to establish the agreements.
Following the main data and observations taken concerning the swelling zoning are provided.
Basically the data comes from the tunnel construction, from the visit to the tunnel and from the
results of the test done at laboratory.
The first analysis carried done was in relation with the data obtained during the construction
(excavation and support) of the Portillo Tunnel. On Table 2.1.I the main data of the eleven
zones to be reinforced using a concrete lining proposed by Tinguiririca are shown. Specifically
in this stable the following main data are included:
Zones 1, 2 and 3 (between PP and P1) are located in a soil that corresponds to the
detritic non consolidated deposits of Sordo-Lucas Unit (Qb).
In the three cases the support applied was Va1 and the maximum convergence
observed was 12 mm.
Zones 4 to 9 (between P1 and P4Ar) are located at the Coya-Machalí unit (KCMt) and in
all the cases the lithology encountered are reddish and brownish tuffs.
The supports used at these 7 areas range between IIIa and Vc. Their details are given in
Table 2.1.I.
Zone 10 (from 11+730 to 11+740) is located at the Coya-Machalí unit (KCMa) and the
lithology are grey andesites moderately fractured, in which a 0.5 m thickness fault with
20 cm of clay exists.
2.2. MAIN OBSERVATIONS DONE DURING THE VISIT TO THE TUNNEL AND
SUMMARY OF SWELLING TEST
Following in the Table 2.2.I the main data obtained during the visit are given. These data
corresponds with the observed lithology when possible, the main result tests obatained from the
lab tests and the observed visible damages in the tunnel.
A special analysis was done for the section between 36+540, as it is the tunnel section in which
major damages have been observed and also it contains the samples that have provide the
highest swelling values.
Figure 2.2.a shows all data (observations, construction data and test results) concerning these
last tunnel section.
From 35+540 to 36+560, in which several damages and high swelling values are
reported.
Figure 2.2.a. Observations and data for the section between 36+540 and 36+590.
After analyzing all the data concerning the tunnel construction, the tests results and the tunnel
observations; the following Table 3.I shows the construction and monitoring actions that have
been defined.
From 36+685 to 36+706 for a design swelling pressure of 0.6 MPa. This section
is under construction.
From 37+242 to 37+265 for a design swelling pressure of 0.7 MPa. This section
is under construction.
Additional support measures for treatment of the fault between 11+735 to 730 (5 m)
In order to design the lining reinforcement layouts capable to resist the swelling pressures
given, FLAC 2D v6.0 code has been employed.
The methodology used to define the concrete lining basically consists in two steps.
In the first one a calibration has been done to obtain realistic and representative rock mass
parameters according to the short term behavior of the tunnel, while afterwards the future
constructive sequence (invert excavation, lining construction and application of the swelling
pressure) has been modelized.
In detail the methodology that has been used for the first step (calibration) was the following:
1. Analysis of the behavior of all the sections to be reinforced during their construction in
term of support applied and convergence measured.
2. Selection of the tunnel chainage (worst case) to be calculated for each section.
3. Calibration of the tunnel convergence measures for each tunnel section using back
analysis. The K0 (ratio between horizontal and vertical stresses) used has been in all the
cases 1.8 transversally and 1.2 longitudinally .As a result of satisfactory calibration using
back analysis techniques, representative rock mass parameters for each rock mass
class at each tunnel section were obtained. Also the main actions at the support
elements have been obtained.
Table 4.I shows all the sections chosen, their main characteristics as well as the rock mass
parameters, obtained in each case.
As it can be observed from this table the values of the real convergence measured in the tunnel
fits reasonably well with the one obtained from the model solved with FLAC, as they are values
of the same range.
The values of the strength and deformational parameters of the rock mass are in the same
range that the ones used in the design of the tunnel support.
It can be concluded that the actual state of the tunnel prior to the construction of the concrete
lining is well known and defined.

Once this first stage (calibration) has been solved the future constructive sequence (invert
excavation, lining construction and application of the swelling pressure) has been modellized
using following process for each model:
1. Installation at each lattice girder of 8 m long rock bolts DSI 32/20 P anchoring them to
the rock mass.
2. Excavation of the existing RCC slab and of the future curve invert, providing an
estimation of the increment of horizontal convergence to be measured at each tunnel
section.
Figure 4.a shows the acting axial force at all the rock bolts in the worst case (Case study 1).
It can be observed that the effect of the RCC slab and the invert excavation doesn’t charge
too much these two last long rock bolts.

Another critical parameter obtained at this stage calculation has been the measurable horizontal
deformation caused by the RCC slab demolition and invert excavation. This is a valuable figure
to be used during the lining implementation to control and monitoring of the constructive
sequence, as a round excavation length of 5 m has been modellized. This deformation value for
the worst case (Case study 1) is lesser than 1 mm. Figure 4.b shows the horizontal deformation
for this case.

Once the excavation has been modellized, the final steps have been the following:
As a result of all the described previous phases the existing principal stresses at the lining have
been obtained. In Annex 1 the results in terms of principal stresses for each of the nine cases
studied are provided (Figures 1 to 18).
In order to give more confidence to these results a second type of calculation was done using
structural elements (beams) for the previously described phases 3 and 4. In Annex 2 the results
in terms of bending moments, axial stresses and shear stresses diagrams for each of the nine
cases studied are provided (Figures 1 to 27).
Following in Table 4.II the maximum values of axial stresses, bending moments and shear
stresses at the vault, walls and invert are provided.

5. REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN
After the results verification the steel reinforcement has been established. Drawings 1 to 7
shows the steel reinforcement for the final lining sections defined.
Following it is developed the design of the reinforced concrete lining in order to resist the efforts
configurations obtained.
The bases of the calculus done have been the actions included at Table 4.II. and following
below it is explained the work methodology used.
The normative EFNARC and EHE-08 has been followed to design the reinforced concrete
lining.
The materials properties that have been considered in the reinforced concrete design are the
following:
Shotcrete, vault
Steel in reinforcement
LINING FOR THE SWELLING CONDITIONS IN THE PORTILLO TUNNEL -Page 15-
5.1.3. ACTIONS
It has not been considered a safety factor or increasing coefficient for the efforts obtained from
the FLAC calculations that have been included in Table 4.II.
At the corners, in the match between the slab and the walls there have been assumed the next
considerations to measure the efforts:
For bending moment and axial force design it has been considered the efforts in a node
between the corner and a distance lower than the half thickness of the section.
For shear force design it has been considered the efforts in a node between the corner
and a distance lower than one and a half thickness of the section.
In order to prevent the cracking of the concrete because of volumetric changes it has been
established a minimum quantity of steel. So, there must be disposed a minimum steel quantity
of 0,9 ‰ percentage of the concrete section area.
In sections under bending moments, in order to prevent the brittle fracture of the steel when the
concrete achieve its traction resistance, it will be demanded the next quantity of steel:
5.2. RESULTS
Next it has been summarized the steel reinforcement disposed in each lining class. The
supporting calculi are enclosed in Annex 3.

6. MONITORING
In order to check the efficiency of the lining in EG3/EG2 sections and to monitor the EG2/EG1
sections, an intensive instrumentation programme is proposed.
For the above purposes four different types of monitoring have been considered:
Multi Point Borehole Extensometer (MPBX): there are three sections in which MPBX
shall be installed:
PK 36+565
PK 36+595
PK 36+200
Convergence measurement sections with two different array schemes with 5 and 8
points. The characteristics of these two different schemes are shown at Figures 3.a and
3.b.
Table 6.I shows the 5-points convergence sections recommended for the lined section as well
as for the second (EG2) and third priority areas proposed by Tinguiririca.
Grid monitoring of the invert; in the location indicated at Table 3.I a grid monitoring of
the invert shall be done.
In al the cases the grid shall be composed by 3 longitudinal lines, one in the tunnel axis
and two laterally located at 2 m from the axis. The spacing of the monitoring references
at each line will be 2 m.
Fissuremeters (graticule plates): in the two locations indicated at Table 3.I, the main
cracks and fissures will be monitored using fissuremeters to follow the evolution and
aperture of these cracks.

7. CONCLUSIONS
The analysis of the data during the tunnel construction, the results of the swelling lab tests an d
the tunnel inspection, allow establishing a tunnel zoning defining the section in which a concrete
lined able to support swelling pressures is necessary.
Those sections have been calculated using FLAC code and making a double checking with
elements and structural elements. After the results verification, the steel reinforcement has been
established for the three different concrete lining geometries established.
Drawings 1 to 7 show these concrete linings according to the swelling design pressure
established.
Drawing 1 defines the three geometries defined as well as the inner hydraulic section for each
one.
Drawings 2 to 5 define the lining reinforcement define for all the tunnel sections in which
swelling formation have been detected as well as for all the range of swelling pressures defined
by HLC. Drawing 6 defines the transition between the tunnel stretch lined and the supported
section.
Finally, drawing 7 define the additional support measures defined to the fault section.
Lining A: for swelling pressures up to 1.5 MPa. It consists in a curved (60 cm) structural
invert and circular walls with reinforced concrete H45 and a vault constructed with
reinforced shotcrete Sh-35.
Lining B: for a swelling pressure ranging of 0.8 MPa. It consists in a curved (30 cm)
structural invert and inclined walls with reinforced concrete H45 and a vault constructed
with reinforced shotcrete Sh-35.
Lining C: for a swelling pressure ranging between 0.7 and 0.6 MPa. It consists in a
curved (30 cm) structural invert and inclined walls with reinforced concrete H45 and a
vault constructed with reinforced shotcrete Sh-35, with less steel quantity than lining B.
Lining D: for a swelling pressure ranging between 0,4 and 0,3 MPa. As it can be
observed in Drawing 2, for swelling pressures ranging form 0.4 to 0.3 MPa, two options
are given. The first one, keeping the geometry of the lining classes B and C but with a
substantive reduction in the steel reinforcement amount. And the second one,
considering the geometry of the lining class E but heavily reinforced.
Lining E: for a swelling pressures lower than 0.1 MPa. It consists in a structural slab and
inclined walls with reinforced concrete H45 and a vault constructed with reinforced
shotcrete Sh-35.
LINING FOR THE SWELLING CONDITIONS IN THE PORTILLO TUNNEL -Page 23-
Lining F: for a swelling pressure of 1 MPa. It consists in a curved (30 cm) structural
invert and inclined walls with reinforced concrete H45 and a vault constructed with
reinforced shotcrete Sh-35. This section is heavily steel reinforced.
In this lining type it has been considered an alternative anchoring the lining to the deep
rock mass and increasing its capacity up to 1.25 MPa of swelling pressure.
In all the cases the concrete is H45 and the shotcrete used at the vault is Sh35.
Finally for the rest of the sections in which swelling condition EG2 and EG1 have been
encountered a complete monitoring plan has been defined.
