ABSTRACT

Indonesia is a country prone to disasters, both earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, floods or other
disasters. One public facility that is prone to disasters, especially earthquakes, is schools. In
Indonesia the school is the most trusted institution for the community to place 'entrust' their
children. Schools include public facilities that are most visited by children. Schools are also the
most effective vehicle for providing and informing knowledge and skills to the closest
community, therefore there is a need for efforts to increase preparedness in students for disasters.
One practical method for improving knowledge, attitudes and skills about disaster is to do
education through disaster media (booklets). The aim of the study was to determine the
effectiveness of disaster education media on disaster preparedness in elementary schools in 2018.
The design used was quasi experiment with two group pre test and post test design. the subject
group was observed before the intervention, then observed again after the intervention. The
population in this study were grade 5 and 6 students at SDIT Al Hasanah. The number of
samples was 30 people for the intervention group and 30 people in the control group and the
entire study sample was 60 people. The research instrument in the form of this study is the author
uses the instrument of disaster preparedness questionnaire (LIPI UNESCO).
The results of the analysis used the T-paired test to compare the preparedness variables in the
group, while the T-independent test was used to compare the preparedness variables in the two
groups. The results of univariate analysis showed that the average age of students was 10 years,
64% were female, 54% were grade 5, 80%. Total preparedness score after being given disaster
education media 81.24 with ready categories.
The results showed that there was an increase in disaster preparedness indicators after being
given disaster education data (p = 0.0001) so that it could be concluded that disaster education
media was effective towards improving disaster preparedness. The Wilcoxon test results showed
that there were differences in disaster preparedness before and after the disaster education media
of students with p value <α = 0.05
It is necessary to apply educational media in disaster risk reduction to elementary school students
so that disaster risk reduction efforts can be well understood.
