SPEC INFO
Generator TMI is commonly required for generating
set quotations or ensuring the generator used on a
particular generating set will match the planned
application. Many of the sections within generator
TMI are self-explanatory, but some pieces of data
have been explained in greater detail through the
following notes.

Generator Specifications and Efficiency

Duty
Duty (rating type) refers to the package generator set
not the generator. (Eg. Standby, Prime, Prime +10%,
Continuous, Load Management, etc.)

For added information about typical load factor, hours

per year, and typical peak demand, consult:
Package Generator Set Performance Specification in
TMI, or
Engine Data Sheet EDS 70.0.4, "Electric Power
Generation", LEKX1365

Application
Application refers to a particular Marketing Business
Unit
(Eg. EPG (Electric Power Generation), MAR
(Marine), OIL (Petroleum), REN (Rental), etc.).

Frame Designation - Leroy Somer - Lexington

The generator frame designations indicate the relative
output of a series of generators. As the series
number (440, 590, etc.) increases, the generators in
that series have a progressively larger diameter and a
higher output. The last number of each series is a
relative descriptor of the length (and capability) of a
generator within a series. A larger number indicates a
higher output. For example, a 449 generator has a
higher output capability than a 447 generator.

If an "s" appears following the last number, that

generator is an updated offering of a generator frame
series.

In order of power output capability the frame size

designations produced are 360, 440, 450, 490, 580,
590, 680, 690, 800, and 820.

Frame Designation - Leroy Somer - France

The generator frame designation can be decoded as
follows:
Eg. LC6124B
LC is the generator prefix defining the generator type.
61xx refers to the 6100 frame size.
Other frames may include 5000 (50xx), 7000 (70xx),

etc.

2 refers to the excitation type.

1 = SE - Self Excited or Shunt Excitation
2 = AREP - Auxiliary Winding Regulator Exciter
Principle.
3 = PMG - Permanent Magnet Excitation

4 refers to the number of poles.

B refers to the core length.

In general, as the letter code increases, so does the
core length.
(Eg. A "D" core is longer than a "B" core).

Excitation Type
SE (Self Excited)
Voltage regulator and exciter are powered by voltage
from generator output terminals. Excitation relies on
residual magnetism in generator to start producing
generator voltage to power exciter voltage.

AREP (Auxiliary Winding Regulator Exciter Principle)

Self excited generator with separate coils in stator to
generate power for voltage regulator and exciter.
Generators equipped with AREP excitation systems
will sustain 300% of rated armature current for 10
seconds.

PMG (Permanent Magnet Generator)

Small, rotor mounted generator (permanently
magnetized) provides power for voltage regulator and
exciter. Generators equipped with PMG excitation
systems will sustain 300% of rated armature current
for 10 seconds.

Production Status
Production status for a generator is shown as: CURR
(CURRent in Price List), CNPL (Current but Not Price
Listed), or CANC (CANCeled).

Version Code
Version code is used internally to track the history of
printed data.

Connection Type
Star (or WYE)
4, 6, 10, 12 lead design. 120 degree phase angle, 3
phase.

Closed Delta
6 or 12 lead generator, three-phase output. Phase
coil groups connected in a triangular fashion. May be
high voltage range (12 lead, series connected) or low
voltage range (12 lead, parallel connected). For a
given generator, this connection provides a lower
voltage as compared with a star or wye connection.

Open Delta
6 or 12 lead generator, single-phase output only -
also known as "zig-zag". May be high voltage range
(12 lead, series connected) or low voltage range (12
lead, parallel connected). Provides line-to-line voltage
connection and line-to-neutral (50% of L-L)

https://tmiwebclassic.cat.com/tmi/servlet/TMIDirector?Action=openwindow&log=genXmlData&type=RNGenDataRefNum&refno=&selection=&unitTyp… 9/14
2/26/2019 Caterpillar Generator Data
Double Delta
12 lead generator, single-phase output. The outer coil
groups are connected as in a 6 wire delta: the inner
coil groups are also connected as in a six wire delta,
and both of the two small deltas are connected in
series. Line-to-line voltage will be double that of the
line-to-neutral voltage. Usually results in a high
generator derate.

Series Connection
Generator coils are connected in series to deliver full
generator rated voltage. May apply to three phase or
single phase output.

Parallel Connection
Generator coils are connected in parallel to deliver
50% of the series connected voltage. May apply to
three phase or single phase output.

Leads
Most generator outputs are delivered as flexible leads
(conductors). Each lead represents a specific internal
generator connection point. Generator stator output
leads are usually marked T1, T2, T3, ..etc., per
NEMA MG-1 practices. The individual phases are
normally referred to as Phase A, Phase B, and
Phase C.

If IEC Standard 60034, or British Standard

BS4999/5000, is being followed, the three phases are
designated as U, V, and W.

Generators may be 4 lead, 6 lead, 10 lead, or 12 lead

Single-phase generators may have leads marked L1,

or L2 (T1, or T2).

Wires Per Lead

Many generators have more than one conductor
that comprises a "lead". The conductors are
known as "wires", and are individually marked
to show their lead designation. A 12 lead
generator may have 48 wires (4 wires per lead).
For the generator output, all like designated
wires must be connected together as one lead.

Generator Winding Type

Random Wound
Generator stator is manufactured with round
conductors randomly placed within each coil and coil
group. A robust, low cost production technique for
generators not placed in extremely harsh
environments, or designed for medium voltage.

Random Wound - Dual Wound

The generator has two sets of random wound coils
that provide two, three-phase voltages without
reconnection. This design is used primarily on
smaller Rental packages.

Form Wound
Generator stator is manufactured with square
conductors precisely placed within each coil and coil
group. For especially harsh environments, specific
applications, or medium voltage applications.

2/26/2019 Caterpillar Generator Data

Generator Pitch
Generator pitch is calculated by the following
formula:
PITCH = (COIL THROW minus 1), divided by
(NUMBER OF SLOTS divided by NUMBER OF
POLES).

EXAMPLE: A 96 slot generator has a coil throw of

21, and is a 4 pole machine.
Pitch = (Coil Throw -1)/ (No of slots/no of poles)
Pitch = (21-1)/(96/4)
Pitch = 20/24 = 0.8333

For added information on "pitch" see:

Engine Data Sheet EDS 70.4, "Generator Winding
Pitch and Harmonics", LEKX3115

Flywheel Interface
If two digits appear, the first numeric field is
understood to be "5".
For example, a "14" flywheel interface is the same as
the standard SAE designation "514" flywheel
interface. In some cases, the three-digit codes are
still being used.

Flywheel Housing
The standard SAE flywheel housing interface number
is shown (Eg. #0, #00, #1, etc.)

Generator Efficiency - NEMA

Generator efficiency is the percentage of engine
flywheel (or other prime mover) power that is
converted into electrical output. The generator
efficiency shown is calculated by the summation of
all losses method, and is determined in accordance
with IEEE Std. 115.

The efficiency considers only the generator. There is

no consideration of engine or parasitic losses here.

Generator Efficiency - IEC

Generator efficiency is the percentage of engine
flywheel (or other prime mover) power that is

those prescribed by IEC60034.

MECHANICAL
Center of Gravity
The specified center of gravity is for the generator
only. For single bearing generators, and two bearing close coupled gen
erators, X is measured from the generator to flywheel housing interfa
ce, parallel to the rotor. Forward, towards the engine is positive. To
relate to 03 in many package generator set drawings, it will be neces
sary to add the flywheel housing thickness (relative to the rear face
of the engine block) to the X dimension for the generator.

For two bearing, standalone generators (not directly bolted to the fly
wheel housing of an engine), X is measured from the end of the generat
or rotor shaft (drive end), and parallel to the generator rotor. Forwa
rd, towards the engine, is positive. To relate to 03 in a package gene
rator set drawing it will be necessary to add the distance from the en
d of the rotor shaft to the rear face of the block.

For all generators, Y is measured vertically from the rotor center lin
e. Up is positive. The Y measurement may also be known as 01 on many p
ackage general dimension drawings.

For all generators, Z is measured from the generator rotor center line
but as viewed from above. Distances from the rotor center line and to
the right of the generator are positive. The Z measurement may also b
e known as 02 on many package general dimension drawings.

Rotor Balance
Per NEMA MG-1:
For 1500RPM to 2999RPM generators, the vibration
of synchronous generators will not exceed 0.002
inches (0.0508mm) peak-to-peak deflection.

For 1000RPM to 1499RPM generators, the vibration

of synchronous generators will not exceed 0.0025
inches (0.0635mm) peak-to-peak deflection.

Generator Torsional Data

Torsional information is provided to facilitate Torsional
Vibration Analysis (TVA) calculations on generating
set packages.

COOLING DATA

Generator Cooling Requirements - Temperature

- Insulation Data

Heat Dissipated - Generator Only

The amount of heat dissipated shown represents the
amount energy that will be delivered to the area
surrounding the generator through the cooling fan,
through heat radiation, and conduction during steady
state generator operation at the rating selected.

Air Flow - Generator only

The cooling airflow shown is the maximum expected
airflow the generator will deliver. Any air flow
reduction may result in higher internal temperatures,
or require a derate of the generator output capability.

Thermal Limits of Generator

The generator thermal limits table indicates the
various kVA ratings at which the generator
https://tmiwebclassic.cat.com/tmi/servlet/TMIDirector?Action=openwindow&log=genXmlData&type=RNGenDataRefNum&refno=&selection=&unitTy… 12/14
2/26/2019 Caterpillar Generator Data
temperature rise meets the predefined IEC/NEMA
insulation limits for peak or base rated operation.
This table may be used to illustrate the stator and
rotor temperature rise when the generator is providing
the rated kVA of the selected generating set
configuration.

Although a generator set application may imply a

temperature rise (Eg: "prime power" may be thought
to be a 105/40 deg C generator temperature rise),
pay careful attention to specific temperature data to
match a particular specification.

Generators (only) are specified as having a "base"

rating or a "peak" rating (kVA or ekW). "Base" (or
prime) ratings imply that the unit can run on a
continual basis at the specified load point. "Peak" (or
stand-by) ratings, as defined by NEMA, allow
temperature rises up to 25C above those for prime
rated operation with a reduced insulation life.

MOTOR STARTING
Motor Starting Capability - NEMA
Motor starting curves are presented in accordance
with NEMA and are based on empirical data gathered
at the generator manufacturer's facility. Prediction of
the generator synchronous voltage dip can be made
by consulting the motor starting plot for the voltage
dip value that corresponds to the desired motor
starting kVA (skVA) value. Generator synchronous
voltage dip is not equal to the generating set voltage
dip upon load application, as the effect of the engine
has not been considered when a synchronous driver
is used to carry out the test.

Motor Starting Capability - IEC

Motor starting curves are obtained in accordance with
IEC60034, and are displayed at 0.6 power factor.
Prediction of the generator synchronous voltage dip
can be made by consulting the motor starting plot for
the voltage dip value that corresponds to the desired
motor starting kVA (skVA) value. Generator
synchronous voltage dip is not equal to the
generating set voltage dip upon load application, as
the effect of the engine has not been considered
when a synchronous driver is used to carry out the
test.

Current Decrement
The displayed generator current decrement curve
indicates the generator armature current arising from
a symmetrical three-phase fault at the generator
terminals. Generators equipped with AREP or PMG
excitation systems will sustain 300% of rated
armature current for 10 seconds.

Fault Currents
Below the decrement curve, instantaneous fault
currents are displayed for balanced three phase, line-
to-line, and line-to-neutral faults.
