Welcome to the Pipe Stacking Height Calculator!

What does this Excel Sheet do?

This Excel sheet helps you calculate the maximum Stacking height possible for Bare Steel Pipes when stacked in nested confirguration
The sheet also checks the strength of the dunnage on which the pipe is resting

How to use this Excel Sheet

The user is asked for some inputs to be provided. For example, the properties of the pipe like the Outer Diameter, Wall Thickness etc.
The user has to provide all the inputs highlighted in blue.

1. Dynamic Load Factor of 1.2 is assuming transportation on a Ship in open Seas. The factor of 1.2 is 2
Adunnage = b X Lbearing 0.0035 m
based on Nobledenton Rules for Marine Transportation 0030-5(June 2013). For storage on yard, the
2
Dynamic Load Factor can be taken as 1.0 Compressive Stress on Dunnage σdunnage = P/Adunnage 650.18 MT/m
2. Allowable Bending Stress = 0.75 Fy is based on AISC ASD Sec F2-1 for Solid sections. The pipe Thus, Dunnage is Sufficient
bending stress is evaluated for a section of unit width and depth = thickness of the pipe.

3. Load Case 1 is due to the Load of the pipes above. The moment is derived from Roark Formulas for
Stress and Strain (7th Ed.), Circular Ring, Case 5

4. Load Case 2 is due to the self weight of the pipe. The moment is derived from Roark Formulas for
Stress and Strain (7th Ed.), Circular Ring, Case 15

5. Dunnage is assumed to be tropical wood, whose compressive strength is 1405 MT/m 2. For a dunnage 10o
of different type, the compressive strength can be changed by the user.
6. This is the actual no. of tiers of the pipe stacked or intended to be stacked (in the yard or on the vessel
during transportation). It must be less than the max. allowed tiers calculated from this spreadsheet. The
actual no. of tiers are needed to check the compressive strength of dunnage

7. The bearing area of dunnage is assumed to be over an arc of 10 degrees as shown in figure
above
