CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Setting

INTRODUCTION

The definition of social media is “the relationship that exists

between networks of people”. In previous years, the online world has changed

dramatically. Thanks to the invention of social media, young men and women

now exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures and videos at a

truly astonishing rate. However, every day, many students are spending

countless hours immersed in social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,

Link din, Tumblr and more. At first glance this may seem like a waste of time;

however it also helps students to develop important knowledge and social skills,

and be active citizens who create and share content.

At present, whether social media is favorable or unfavorable, many

students utilize these sites on a daily basis. Many parents are worried that their

college students are spending too much time on Facebook and other social

media sites and not enough time studying. 1 In conclusion, it is good for people

to acknowledge both the advantage and the disadvantage of social media. If

people acknowledge what is happening within the social media, they get a clear

view of what to anticipate and whether or not it is something that would want or

would do whether or not it is something that would want or would do without it.
Social media has become part of the people’s lives. Thus, it is good to consider

the effects of social media since its activities will probably increase in the future.

Statement of the problem

The main objective of the study is to investigate the effects of social

media on student’s learning outcomes.

Specifically, the researcher aim to answer the following questions:

1. What are the social media sites that students visit?

2. What are the effects of social media on their school works?

3. Why the number of the students using social media is continuously

increasing?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study would show the effects of social media to students. It is

important to know the significance of a study for a better life.

The following is the beneficiaries of this research of this research study.

Teachers. This study will help the teachers of the school to know the influence

that social media has on their students, so as to assist them to enlighten and

create awareness to the students on the possible influence it has on them.

Parents. The study is significant to parents in the sense that they will know the

possible effects these social media usage has on their children.

Students. The study will enable the students aware of aside from the social

benefits of this social media sites, using the sites more necessary will pose

possible dangers to their health.

Community. They will also have knowledge about the effects of usage of social

media may lead for a high quality of life in a community.

Future researchers. This research study will guide themselves for conducting the

same research.

Definition of terms:
Social media – forms of electronic communication (such as web sites) through

which people creates online communities to share information, ideas personal

messages, etc.

Literature – books, articles, etc. about a particular subject

Comprise – to include or consist of (something)

Leisure – enjoyable activities that you do when you are not working.

Scope and Delimitation

The focus of this work is to primarily study the effect of social media on

student learning outcomes. The research study will comprise of first year

students of Daraga Community College. The students were given unlimited time

to answer the questionnaire. This study will conduct from February to March

2018.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This part presents the review of related literature and studies which had become

the very basis for the researchers to pursue the present research work.

Foreign Related Studies

In the past, social networking were viewed as a distraction and offered no

educational benefit. Blocking this social network was a form of protection for

students against wasting time, bullying and privacy protection. In a educational

setting, 2go and BB chat is seen by students and educators as frivolous time

wasting and distraction from school work. However there is no evidence of this;

69% of social media using teens and 85% adult said people are mostly kind to

one another. The national school board association reports that almost 60% of

the students who use social media sites talk about educational topics online and

more than 50% talk about school work. Yet the vast majority of school districts

has stringent rules against nearly all forms of social media during school hours.

Social media focused on supporting relationship between teachers and students

which are now used for learning. Some sites like Ning for teachers and term wi-ki

learning centre were created to support this. 2

College students have great interest in social media for example. For the purpose

of this study, social media was defined as Facebook,Youtube,Twitter,Myspace or

Link din. Facebook is the most used social media sites by college students

followed by YouTube and Twitter. Moreover, Facebook alone reports that it has

now 500 million active users,50% of whom log on every day. One of the most

interesting things to look at is the increasing number of student users on such

social media sites. As per the survey conducted 72% of high school and 78% of

college students spend time on Facebook, Twitter,Instagram, etc.

On the other hand, our findings indicate that electronic media use is negatively

associated with grades. It was also found that about two thirds of the students

reported using electronic media while in class, studying or doing homework.3

Foreign Related Literature

Junco, Heibergert, and Lokenet al (2011) a study is conducted on 132 students

in order to examine the relationship of social media and engagement of students

with it& social media and grades of students. To examine this relationship the

students were divided into two groups, one group use twitter and the other

group did not use twitter account. It was used to make discussions about study

material, organize the study groups in a manner, also post the announcements

of class, and remain in touch with class fellows. Junco and his coworkers (2011)

surprised that the students of Twitter group achievegreater GPAs and higher

scores than the other group

J,S et al (2011) Examine by online mailing questionnaires to respondents that

the person having smart phones are the most frequent users of social

networking sites and have easy access to these sites, more over it showed that

junior and senior student are more interesting to use twitter, LinkedIn and read

blogs. twitter and LinkedIn having more rating by older students to communicate

and shared information and material with their friends and the younger are

frequent user of Facebook for their different activities while usage of such media

have no negative effect on students grades.

Shambare, R et al. (2012) Conduct a study on Social networking habits among

students their study indicates that such Medias most commonly used by

younger’s and Facebook is most widely using by a large number of communities

and have multiple effects on student's life. The high speed and quickly approach

to internet and the development of smart phone technology are most important

drivers behind the adoption and connectivity with social networking websites and

conclude that SNS enhance their knowledge level. Heeter, (2006) a study at

University of Michigan State give information about technology use in higher

education, particularly in relation to faculty. This survey interprets teaching and

learning habits for staff members online, students that are graduate and

undergraduate are also included. About 65 % of faculty and students both read

blogs but here faculty for personal information was more likely read them.

Students post for both educational and personal proposes. Faculty used online

photo sharing programs more than students such as Flicker, but about 50 % of

both groups used it. Students used Facebook 70 percent while faculty used less

than 10 percent of either Facebook or MySpace. Students send text message

more likely.4

Social Media and Social Networks in the Philippines

According to the survey conducted by comScore, Inc., a global leader in

measuring the digital world and preferred source of digital marketing

intelligence, Filipino internet users are the most engaged in social networking

online, a leading online audience measurement service on year 2010. In a press

statement, comScore said the Philippines has the highest social networking

usage in the Asia-Pacific region with more than 90% of its entire Web population

visiting a social networking site during the month of February 2010, followed by

Australia (89.6% penetration) and Indonesia (88.6% penetration).5

CHAPTER III

Methods and Procedure

This chapter describes the subjects of the study, sources of data and the

procedure followed in this study.

Research participants

The respondents of the study consisted of first year students of Daraga

Community College who have experience in using social media. The participant’s

consisted of 15 students.

Instrumentation

The data collected through a survey questionnaire to achieve the purpose of the

study. The questionnaire is one of the most common instrument for data

gathering. It is intended to contain information about condition or practices of

which the respondents are presumed to have knowledge. The questionnaire was

composed of two parts namely:

Part I contained the respondents personal data such as name, gender, year level

and their age. Part II was the question proper.

Data gathering procedure

The researcher made a letter for the approval to conduct the study at Daraga

Community College. The survey questionnaires were randomly given to 15 first

year students. The instruments were retrieved after they finished answering. A

total of 15 fully completed answered.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data were analyzed and interpreted with the use of frequency count,

percentage and ranking are employed indicated below.
