Student Response and Assessment Tools
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):
Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: During the SRT activity, students will use
computers to complete the ten questions on the assessment while following the instructions/directions that
are provided for some of the questions. Other questions are self-‐explanatory. The teacher will monitor
students as they work, help with any technology issues that may arise, and answer any questions the students
may have as they complete the assessment. The only materials needed for the activity are computers for each
student in the class. The activity will last the span of one entire class period.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-‐ended response or fill-‐in the blank ☒ Longer open-‐ended response
If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-‐10):
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☐ Yes ☐ No
☒ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-‐select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Other than the two free-‐response questions at the end of the assessment, each question is followed by the
correct answer so that students have access to the correct answers, may view each explanation as to why the
answer was correct, and understand why the answers they missed were not correct.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity: After each student has completed all ten of the
questions on the assessment and viewed the correct answers and explanations, the students will be asked to
close their computers and put them away. The lesson on Night has ended and the teacher will begin the next
unit at the start of the next class period.
How will the data be used? Data that will be collected as a result of this activity include the number (%) of
students who answered correctly for each question, the questions that were most commonly missed, and the
average number (%) of the average grade on the assessment for the class as a whole. The data will be used by
the teacher to know what aspects of the novel students understood and comprehended most clearly and
what components students struggled with and did not fully comprehend. Then, using the data as a guide, the
teacher may choose to alter or differentiate instruction for the next group of students the following academic
year before they begin reading Night.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. For this activity, I am trying a new, alternative form of
assessment that I have not tried before. I hope to learn from this activity how students’ performance on this
online assessment varies and differs from their normal performance on written quizzes, tests, and/or exams.
My goal is that this activity will help students better interpret and express what they have learned after
reading Night, rather than solely testing them on their knowledge of the content from the text.
Reflective Practice: The activities created could impact student learning by providing the students with more
than one option of showing what they have learned after reading Night. In the assessment, students are
asked to answer multiple choice and true/false questions regarding the content of the novel, as well as
respond to and express their application of the text using their own words. In doing so, students who excel in

remembering versus students who excel at writing are given equal advantage. To further extend the lesson,
the teacher may consider adding more questions to the assessment that include more symbols, motifs,
themes, quotations, and vocabulary terms from the text, as well as more free-‐response questions. Another
technology tool that could further enhance this project is Quizlet, allowing the students to review and play
games to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of Night.
