Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students are given multiple means of representation through comparison of notes and watching a video
about the government. The engagement has multiple means as well, because they get to work alone, with a
partner, and get to partake in a class discussion. Lastly, they get to show expression of their knowledge in a
multimedia format; within that, students can add hyperlinks to create more multimedia. They can add videos,
games, and articles. This lesson allows for multiple ways to learn and show that you have learned.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will begin this lesson by watching a video about the government; the students will then take notes
and describe what they watched. Students will then get with a partner and compare notes. The teacher and
students will have a class discussion about the government: “What kind of government do we have? What
does legislative mean? What is the difference between judicial and executive?” Then, students will get in
groups to create a bubble mind map about the government. They will have to include the three branches of
government for both state and national government.
The student will be assessing by the bubble mind map they have made. Differentiation for this assignment
could be changing color coding to one that keep students on track or changing the shape of the mind map to
be one that is easier for a wandering eye to follow. Their work can be assessed with a rubric.

Reflective Practice: Students are able to clearly brainstorm what they know about state and national
governments. I think students have a good resource to use to brainstorm but they now also have a great
resource for reviewing and practicing. They can use these to work with from home or they can share this link
with other classmates.
