MCREST as An Alternative Learning Strategy for Students in


Learning Algebra

Abstract

This paper described how secondary school students in Cimahi learned about algebra by using
MCREST. MCREST stand for Meaningful, Confidence, Relevance, Enjoyment, Social
Relationship, and Targets. It’s one of the learning strategies driven by affective aspects motif. This
paper wants to describes how this strategy implemanted in classroms. A topics of algebra was
choosen as the mathematics strands. In this study there were two mathematics classrooms of
secondary school in Cimahi were choosen to used this strategy. This study was held for two
months from Agustus until September in 2016. The data of this study were learning artefacts.
Using this strategy, students will have experience to study algebra in different way, not only rote
learning or memorize like mathematics school but also doing mathematics by their hands. This
way will lead the students to rich representasion and meaningful learning. Finding of this study
may provide others teachers who are interested in various learning to use this strategy to develop
motivation and creative thinking.

Do not include page numbers in your submission.
Sub Heading
Sub headings should be left justified and written in Bold, TNR 12 with all
words capitalized where needed.
Maintaining Consistency of the Specifications

Abbreviations and Acronyms
First time used abbreviations and acronyms in main text should be defined even
though it has been used in the abstract. Please avoid abbreviations such as labs,
exams, tutes.

Diagrams, Tables and Figures
All diagrams, tables and figures included in the paper should be clearly labelled
and centered between the margins. Please leave one blank line (10pt not bold)
before the diagram, table or figure. Insert the label below figures in TNR 10pt bold
and left aligned. Insert the label above tables in TNR 10pt bold and left aligned.
Leave one blank line (10pt not bold) after the label. If the figure has no label, insert
one blank line (12pt not bold) after the figure. All diagrams and figures created in
programs other than Microsoft Word should be gif, tiff or jpeg images.
Equations
All equations can only be written in TNR or Symbol font only. For multileveled
equations, it is suggested that to treat the equation as a graphic and insert it into the
text after paper is formatted. All equations must be centered using a center tab

stop. Numbering of the equation should be flushed right. All equations are
numbered consecutively within parentheses.

shown at the end of these guidelines to ensure consistency throughout the
proceedings.
