Barry Harris rule 1: So, let's say we're on C7.

If you start on root, And, instead of just coming straight
third, fifth, or seventh down the scale....
of the chord, you can put
an extra half step between the
3 root and the seventh.

We're going to put an And when we do that,

extra half step between we end up with a
the root and the chord tone on
seventh... every strong beat.
5

BillGrahamMusic (1 of 2) Barry Harris Bebop 1/2 Step Rules (updated March 6, 2019 R.Glover RdgJr619 )
Okay, we can do that from the 2
8 third.....

10 Or from the fifth....

Or from the seventh...

12

Rule number 2 is that if you start on the second,

fourth, or sixth you add no half steps....
14

starting from the second....

starting from the sixth....

19

Or, (Rule 2-A), (when starting on 2, 4, or 6) you can add TWO half steps:
between the second and the root,
and between the root and the seventh:

21

starting from the second....

22

24 starting from the fourth....

starting from the sixth.... 4
26

Rule number 3 is that if you start on the third, fifth, or seventh of the chord
you can add THREE half steps:
between the third and second,
second and root,
and root and seventh....
28

So if we start on the third.....

29

Or starting from the fifth.....

31

Or starting from the seventh..... 5

4:37]
Let's try that whole sequence on F7....
35 95

Barry Harris rule 1:

If you start on root,
third, fifth, or seventh
of the chord, you can put
an extra half step between the
36 root and the seventh.

Rule number 2 is that if you start on the second,

39 fourth, or sixth you add no half steps....

41

BillGrahamMusic (1 of 2) Barry Harris Bebop 1/2 Step Rules (updated March 6, 2019 R.Glover RdgJr619 )
(Rule 2-A) 6
Or, (when starting on 2, 4, or 6)
you can add TWO half steps:
between the second and the root,
43
and between the root and the seventh:

Rule number 3 is that if you start on the

third, fifth, or seventh of the chord
you can add THREE half steps:
between the third and second,
second and root,
45 and root and seventh....

47

[5:11] So let's stay on F7 for a minute and talk

"Great... about the four arpeggios
Go around the circle of fifths that Barry shows us are inside the
50
and practice that in every key... F7 chord and F7 scale..

BillGrahamMusic (1 of 2) Barry Harris Bebop 1/2 Step Rules (updated March 6, 2019 R.Glover RdgJr619 )
[5:26] 7
52
So obviously there's an F7 arpeggio...

And then there's an arpeggios that starts on the THIRD

of the chord....
Now that looks like an A minor 7 flat 5.
So when you see an Am7b5 chord you can actually think "F7 over it".
53 So, you can actually play this arpeggio over an F7 chord.

Next, if we go up and start the arpeggio from the 5th...

We get what looks like a C minor 7 chord.
So, Barry shows us that when you're playing a ii-V,
JUST THINK FIVE.
55 Also, when you're on Cm7 just think F7.

And lastly, there's an arpeggio on the 7th...

Which is Ebmaj7.
57 [So when you're on Ebmaj7 just think F7].

BillGrahamMusic (1 of 2) Barry Harris Bebop 1/2 Step Rules (updated March 6, 2019 R.Glover RdgJr619 )
[6:18] 8
So now let's play each of these
arpeggios into a descending scale
58
line USING THE RULES

So let's start with an F7 arpeggio. So we're going to apply rule 2,

And if we resolve down from there which is "no half steps for
we end up on the 6th degree of the 2, 4, or 6"...
59
scale....

Or we could apply the other

version of rule 2,
which is "two half steps between
2 and 1, and 1 and 7 for
61 2, 4, or 6"...

Let's apply rule number one.

What is we resolve [If you start on root,
UP? third, fifth, or seventh
Okay, now we're on of the chord, you can put
the ROOT... an extra half step between the
62 root and the seventh].

BillGrahamMusic (1 of 2) Barry Harris Bebop 1/2 Step Rules (updated March 6, 2019 R.Glover RdgJr619 )
So we're going to apply rule 2 again, 9
Cool. What is we resolve which is "no half steps for
the arpeggio up another 2, 4, or 6"...
third?
Now we're on the SECOND...
64

Or we could apply the other

version of rule 2,
which is "two half steps between
2 and 1, and 1 and 7 for
66 2, 4, or 6"...

Great. Ok, how about if

we start our arpeggio on the
third?
Well if we resolve it DOWN we're
going to resolve on the ROOT,
so we apply rule 1
[ rule 1: If you start on root,
third, fifth, or seventh
of the chord, you can put
an extra half step between the
67 root and the seventh.]

BillGrahamMusic (1 of 2) Barry Harris Bebop 1/2 Step Rules (updated March 6, 2019 R.Glover RdgJr619 )
ok? If we revolve it UP, Or rule 3 10
now we're on the THIRD of [if you start on the third, fifth, or seventh
the chord. of the chord you can add THREE
So we can apply rule 1 half steps:
[ rule 1: If you start on root, between the third and second,
third, fifth, or seventh second and root,
of the chord, you can put and root and seventh]
an extra half step between the
root and the seventh.]

68

And if we resolve it up Or the other version of

another step, now we're on rule 2
the FOURTH. [(Rule 2-A) when starting
So, we're going to apply on 2, 4, or 6) you can add TWO
rule 2. half steps:
[Rule number 2 is that if you start between the second and the root,
on the second, fourth, or sixth and between the root and
70 you add no half steps....] the seventh]

Great. Let's try an arpeggio Or we could apply

from the FIFTH of the chord. rule number 3
Which if we resolve DOWN, [if you start on the third, fifth, or seventh
we end up on the THIRD, so we're of the chord you can add THREE
going to apply rule 1 half steps:
[rule 1: If you start on root, between the third and second,
third, fifth, or seventh second and root,
of the chord, you can put and root and seventh]
an extra half step between the
72
root and the seventh.]

BillGrahamMusic (1 of 2) Barry Harris Bebop 1/2 Step Rules (updated March 6, 2019 R.Glover RdgJr619 )
How about if we resolve UP a Or we could apply 11
step? rule number 3
Well now we're on the FIFTH [if you start on the third, fifth, or seventh
of the chord. So we can apply of the chord you can add THREE
the same two rules. half steps:
[rule 1: If you start on root, between the third and second,
third, fifth, or seventh second and root,
of the chord, you can put and root and seventh]
an extra half step between the
74 root and the seventh.]

And what if we resolve up another Or the other version of

third up from there? rule 2
Well now we're on the SIXTH of the [(Rule 2-A) when starting
chord, so we're going to use rule 2 on 2, 4, or 6) you can add TWO
[Rule number 2 is that if you start half steps:
on the second, fourth, or sixth between the second and the root,
you add no half steps.] and between the root and
the seventh]
76

And lastly, how about an arpeggio Or we could apply

from the SEVENTH of the chord? rule number 3
So if we resolve DOWN we end [if you start on the third, fifth, or seventh
up at the FIFTH. So we can apply of the chord you can add THREE
rule 1. half steps:
[rule 1: If you start on root, between the third and second,
third, fifth, or seventh second and root,
of the chord, you can put and root and seventh]
an extra half step between the
root and the seventh.]
78

BillGrahamMusic (1 of 2) Barry Harris Bebop 1/2 Step Rules (updated March 6, 2019 R.Glover RdgJr619 )
Ok? If we resolve it up a STEP... Or we could apply 12
then we're on the SEVENTH, rule number 3
and we've got the same two rules [if you start on the third, fifth, or seventh
to apply. of the chord you can add THREE
rule 1. half steps:
[rule 1: If you start on root, between the third and second,
third, fifth, or seventh second and root,
of the chord, you can put and root and seventh]
an extra half step between the
root and the seventh.]
80

And if we resolve it up ANOTHER

step, then we're on the ROOT.
So we have to use rule 1.
[rule 1: If you start on root,
third, fifth, or seventh
of the chord, you can put
an extra half step between the
root and the seventh.]
82

[10:28]
Alright, let's try all those
combinations in a row.

[12:31]
Allright, so those are Barry's models for adding extra half notes to descending dominant
seventh scales.
If you spend any time at all checking out the playing of bebop masters like Charlie
22 Parker, Bud Powell, or Barry himself, you should already be recognizing some of these
sounds from their solos.
