INTRODUCTION
Globally, over one billion people – including men, women and children
– live in scarcity. Their poverty is complicated, such as lack of knowledge,
health facilities and hospitals; and they are vulnerable to external hazards,
like droughts and economic crises. Additionally, they don’t have enough
sources of clean water. Most of these people live in developing countries like
South Africa (Moriarty, Butterworth & van Koppen, 2004: 243; Elimeleck,
2006:3-8; UNISEF/WHO, 2004: 36; United Nations Development
Programme, 2006:1).
For numerous unfortunate households, only a thin line separates the
spaces used for cooking and eating, bathing, and as toilets and garbage
disposals. Unsafe, dirty water kills more people than wars each year.
MANILA, Philippines – Half of Filipino households, as of 2011, did not try to
make their drinking water safe, according to the latest National Nutrition
Survey (NNS). Not everyone has entree to proper sanitation and hygiene.
This can impact on individual health, and in the long-run, the country’s overall
efficiency. A child dies around the world in every 21 seconds from water-
related illnesses, international non-profit organization (UNICEF/WHO,
2006:41). This is generally due to water contaminated by fecal matter –
because many families still have toilets deficiency. Provided that better water
systems can help “improve socio-economic, health and nutrition status of
houses,” the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) advised.
The purpose of this literature review is to find the weaknesses and to
seek resolutions to address the concerns faced by the barangay in securing
accessible clean water for the local residents. A review of the international
and local literature is presented in this paper. Furthermore, the methods and
solutions presented in the literature are discussed. References based on the
study of the literature will be presented, with the aim of assessing the
domestic water supply of barangay Salawagan, Quezon, Bukidnon
Municipality to address the challenge of providing access to clean water for
all the people in this district.
