Equipment Marking

• All equipment manufactured for use in explosive

atmospheres, the explosive atmosphere can be
gases, vapours and/or mists or combustible dusts,
must be suitably marked to indicate in what
hazardous area (zone) the equipment can be
installed.

Equipment/Zones

• Equipment for use in gas zones was selected by the

electrical concept e.g. Ex d i.e. flameproof, was
suitable for use in a zone 1 and zone 2.
• This meant the person installing the equipment had
to know and understand the concepts.
• Supplementary identification marks were introduced
under European Directive 94/9/EC to assist the
selection of equipment for use in zones.
• Directive 2014/34/EU is an update to 94/9/EC

ATEX 94/9/EC

has become

ATEX 2014/34/EU
This was implemented

Objective
• The ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU (was 94/9/EC)
covers electrical and non-electrical (mechanical)
equipment and protective systems that may be used
in explosive atmospheres formed by gases, vapours,
mists, dusts, ignitable fibres or flying's.
• Ensures free movement for certified products within
Europe.
• Removes trade barriers (technical barriers) between
European countries.

The main differences are:

• The inclusion of non-electrical equipment;
• The inclusion of dust atmospheres;
• Requirements for safety related devices (flame
arrestors, suppression systems etc) and safe area
equipment

99/92/EC and 2014/34/EU

• Directive 99/92/EC states that equipment must be

selected for use in hazardous areas (zones) by the
Category as identified in Directive 2014/34/EU.(was
94/9/EC).
• This is MANDATORY!!!!
• Unless the risk assessment states otherwise.

ATEX Equipment Groups

• Group I: Coal Mining only

• Group II: Surface industries and other mining

industries not associated with coal mines.

• The equipment group is based on the groups that

were around in 1994.

• The CE mark signifies that the supplier of the product

(usually the manufacturer) has verified that the
product complies with the requirements of the
relevant Directives. For the ATEX Directive, the
symbol CE must be accompanied by the following:
• Name and address of manufacturer
• Designation of series, type, Serial number, if any
• Year of construction
• Equipment group category
• For equipment of Group II the letters G and/or D
for type of atmosphere (gases, vapours, mists

Equipment Temperature Class

• Equipment is identified with a temperature class.

• Identified by a ‘T’ rating (sometimes also by a
temperature in ˚C).
• The temperature class identifies the hottest
temperature that the equipment can obtain in normal
operation (and in a specified fault condition).
• This can be either the inside or the outside of the
equipment depending on the protection concept.

Temperature Class
• One thing that must never be allowed to happen is
that the surface (internal or external) temperature of
the equipment rise beyond the ignition temperature
of the gas or vapour that it is located in.
• T = Temperature
• 6 = 85°Celsius
• This is the maximum that the equipment can obtain, it
may not be the temperature that the equipment will
actually get to.

Equipment Protection Levels

• The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)

introduced a similar scheme to the ATEX Categories in
2006 for countries not part of the European Union i.e.
rest of the world.
• This scheme is known as the Equipment Protection
Levels (EPL’s).
• The Equipment Protection Levels (EPL’s) are the IEC’s
equivalent of the Levels of Protection (ATEX
categories).

Equipment Protection Levels

• The EPL’s follow the level of protection indication of

a, b and c in line with the level of protection afforded
by the equipment.
• For many years we’ve had:
• Ex ia for use in zone 0, 1 and 2;
• Ex ib for use in zone 1 and 2.
