Fuel Pump Governor

Introduction:
All diesel engines with mechanical fuel system are equipped with a
governor. Diesel engines can accelerate – increase speed – at the rate of
more than 2000 revolutions per second. Without a governor , a diesel
engine can quickly destroy itself.

Never operate a diesel engine without a governor controlling it. If you

were to move the fuel rack of diesel engine to the full –ON- position
without a load and with the governor not connected, the engine speed
might climb and exceed safe operation limits before you could shut it
down. One or two seconds may elapse before you knew what was
happening. By the time, the engine may have been seriously damaged
by over speeding.

Definition:
The term "Never operate an engine without a governor" cannot be
over stated. Additionally, governors keep the engine running at desired
speeds and increase or decrease engine power output to meet various
load demands.

Types of governors:
1-Mechanical governors.
2-Hydraulic governors.

3-Electronic governors.
Mechanical Governor:

Mechanical governor is the simplest of the various types of

governors and is basic to their operation.

Diesel engine mechanical governors consist of two basic

mechanism: the speed measuring mechanism and the fuel changing
mechanism.

The speed measuring mechanism (left of picture) senses engine

speed changes. The fuel changing mechanism (right of picture) increases
the amount of fuel supplied to the engine to adjust to speed changes.
Straight Five Engine Firing Order

The straight-five engine or inline-five engine is an internal

combustion engine with five cylinders aligned in one row or plane,
sharing a single engine block and crankcase. The justification for a five
cylinder engine is that it is almost as compact as an inline-four, and
almost as smooth as a straight-six engine.

Common firing orders for inline-fives are 1-2-4-5-3 and 1-5-2-3-4, or

their reverses.
