Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: This lesson extends student engagement because it’s an interactive tool, but I could further
extend engagement by having little competitions for answering the questions correctly to ensure students are
paying attention and answering the questions to the best of their ability.
Representation: I could extend representation with this lesson by giving the students the option of using
whichever electronic device they feel more comfortable with to answer questions, such as a phone,
computer, or tablet.
Action and Expression: Students differ in how they are able to express what they know. I could help my
students extend their expression by providing multiple types of questions on the quiz such as true/false,
multiple choice, etc.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity, students will have completed in its entirety, reading the novel, The Hunger Games. I
will then have the students individually complete this SRT activity as a type of mini overview of the plot of the
novel and track their progress on whether they comprehended the reading. The SRT activity will help review
and prepare the students for a test over the novel’s plot to ensure reading comprehension.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Students will take out their own individual device(computer, phone, tablet), and answer the Kahoot!
Questions as they are put up on the SmartBoard screen. The teacher will facilitate with any questions the
students may have along with the Kahoot!, as well as start the kahoot! And control when the questions are
presented to the students. The materials needed will be students’ own devices. The activity will last about 10-
15 minutes accounting for students answering the questions and discussions amongst teacher and student
due to the Kahoot! Questions being presented.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? I will display the correct answers after each question in order to help with review over the
novel, as well as to incite discussions with the class over the questions and the book.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, the next day, students will take a Reading Comprehension test over the novel, which
will cover basic plot questions over the entire book.

How will the data be used?

The data that will be collected as a result of this activity will be whether or not the students remembered and
understood and comprehended the book they read. The data will be used by the teacher to see who may still
need to look back over the book before the test, and also the data will be used by the student themselves to
assess if they understood the book, and if not to let them know they need to brush up on the book or reread
it before the test. I will not discuss a lot about the data with the class, other than to tell them that if they did
not do as well on the Kahoot! As they wished, that they should go back over the book and make sure they
understand what they read and ask the teacher any questions they may have before the test. I will use the
data as well to differentiate instruction by showing students their overall correlation of right/wrong answers
after each question. This differentiates because it allows self-reflection after each question and class
discussions.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

Spring 2018_SJB
Student Response and Assessment Tools
The learning goal for this activity is that students comprehended, and remembered what they read. I want
students to have an interactive and fun, way to review for a test and refresh themselves on what they just
read instead of doing a boring study guide that students may not look at or complete on their own. I hope this
will help students learn because they will focus on the questions because they’re thoroughly engaged in the
fun activity.

Reflective Practice:
The activities I created could impact student learning by keeping students engaged and interacting with the
questions being asked. Instead of having volunteers raise their hand and only getting a few responses, I can
get full class participation and answers to questions through this assessment tool. I could further extend this
lesson by creating questions that don’t just cover the plot of the novel, but questions on themes present,
symbols, and so on.
